Five Elements yoga

Each day of the retreat will be dedicated to one of the great five elements (water, Earth, fire, air, and spirit). This retreat benefits all levels of practitioners regardless of where you are in your yoga journey.

Five Elements yoga is a variation of Hatha yoga, focusing on each of the five elements. This style is excellent for beginners and provides an interesting approach for the experienced yogi.

  • Fire: energetic level, courage, words
  • Water: emotional level, compassion, feelings
  • Wind: mental level, understanding, thought
  • Earth: physical level, practicality, action
  • Spirit: spiritual level, intuition, ideas

The Five Elements concept is the oldest knowledge in the world, originating as ancient religion in Egypt, India, and Sumeria. Civilizations would develop esoteric knowledge such as yoga, Tantra, astrology, numerology, feng shui, and many others based on these beliefs. To today, many mystics, yogis, saints, and hermits still use this concept to continue on the spiritual path they have chosen.

The Five Elements can shape your life and influence your perception of reality. Balance between elements develops qualities such as peace, power, joy, and harmony. You only need to discover, implement, and balance these elements in your character, as you are made from all of the five elements. As you are made from the same elements as nature, Mother Nature can be your greatest teacher.

In the retreat, you will not only learn about the Five Elements but discover which is your strongest and which ones may need attention and learn the method of bringing balance to the elements.

This retreat program will be running for five days, so that each day you can dedicate it to one element.

Sample daily schedule

  • 08:00 Morning yoga
  • 09:30 Breakfast
  • 11:00 Lecture and meditation
  • 13:00 Lunch

After lunch, you can go to the beach, have a rest or just relax before your daily adventure in the late afternoon. After the adventurous activities, in the evening you are free to explore the Rovinj and socialize.

To make this retreat more memorable, every day you will get in contact with the elements in the nature trough easy adventure tours and activities including kayaking, windsurfing, biking, hiking, and cave exploring.

During your adventure, you will visit all the best spots of Rovinj; the old town, the park and many beaches, including some islands and Lim fjord. Five Elements Retreats will choose the sequence of the elements according to the weather conditions and other considerations. In case of rain or strong wind, you will go on some other tour or you do more yoga, lecture, or meditations.

Air day - windsurfing lessons

On air day, you will learn windsurfing - the most exciting water activities! Five Elements Retreats will provide all equipment and trained instructors. No previous windsurfing experience needed.

Earth day - hiking tour and secret cave exploration

On Earth day, you will spend the afternoon hiking in the shadow of the forest and exploring secret sites.

Rovinj is home to several secret caves that few people know of. Some caves were used by Saint Romualdo over 1000 years ago to live and meditate in. The public is aware of only one, but you will be shown to another cave which is only known by a few locals! To finish the day, you have the option to try local cuisine at one of Rovinj's best restaurants located near the caves.

Fire day - biking and gathering

On fire day, you will be cycling through the city with mountain bikes, discovering trails that lead through landscapes of awesome natural beauty. You will ride along the coast so you can stop for a swim on one or more of the beautiful beaches. In the evening, you will hang out around a fire.

Spirit day - yoga and meditation

On Spirit day there will be a special sound meditation. The spirit day will be every day and for that element you will do yoga and meditation.

Water day - kayak tour of Rovinj Islands

On water day, you will jump into kayaks and explore the waters around the Rovinj archipelago. You will kayak to gorgeous secluded islands and beaches where you can snorkel, swim, or just float in the beautifully clear Adriatic Sea. On the return, you will enjoy Croatian's famously beautiful sunsets, right from you kayak!

  • Marin Poldrugovac

Marin is an adventure guide, nature lover, and an instructor in the Five Elements. He has been in the world of yoga for over 15 years, and has been a lecturer on the Five Elements for over eight years. He is also the author of "Dance of the Wind", a novel about yoga inspired by his travels and the Five Elements.

  • Natali Podner

Natali Podner is a physiotherapist and yoga instructor. In her early twenties, she traveled around the world as a model and she experienced a lifestyle that was beautiful from the outside. Today, she is finding more beauty and peace inside, and she tries to find love in doing small things.

This retreat is located in the stunning natural setting of Rovinj in Istria, Croatia.

Istria is the largest Croatian peninsula and it lies on the northern end of the Croatia’s Adriatic Coast. Often compared to Tuscany, Istria is unique with its incredible layers of culture and buildings from almost every era. There's the Roman amphitheater in Pula (the sixth largest in the world and also one of the best preserved) and the Euphrasius Basilica in Poreč (listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List) to name but two.

The fertile peninsula features green fields and valleys with romantic hilltop towns and medieval villages. The diverse coastline features mainly pebble and white stone beaches, pine trees, and lots of naturist friendly secluded coves.

Istria's cultural richness is present throughout this magical peninsula, and are perhaps most obvious in the town of Rovinj. The panorama of Rovinj with the church of St. Euphemia and its bell tower is one of the most pertinent symbols of Istria.

The beauty of Rovinj has attracted many artists inspired by its incredibly preserved old town houses and picturesque narrow streets. Among these streets, Grisia has a special place, as the artists who gather there traditionally sell their works to tourists.

Something to keep in mind is that on the west coast near Rovinj, there is also the Brijuni Archipelago, a national park, and a pearl of natural heritage in Istria. It consists of various islands with around 680 plant species and is also known also as the once luxurious state summer residence of President Tito and top officials of the former Yugoslavia.

On the far south of Istria, you can enjoy the dramatic landscapes of the protected park Cape Kamenjak, and Pula, the largest town in Istria.

The rich archaeological heritage of Istria is represented in numerous museums, the largest being the famous Archaeological Museum in Pula. Bale is a beautiful spot also worth visiting. Five Elements Retreats recommends that you pay a visit to the picturesque Kamene Priče (Stone Tales) jazz cafe and restaurant.

Because of its position, Istria is extremely accessible from all European routes and the mild Mediterranean climate invites year-round visitors.

Amazing time at the Five Elements Retreat (Rovinj)

CONS Cons: Perhaps as a 6 night trip, the 4th day could be a rest day so the activities take place on the 2-3rd & 5-6th day rather than being spread over 4 consecutive days.

PROS Pros: The combination of relaxation (yoga) and adventure (hiking, cycling and kayaking) was just what I needed....... made even more memorable by the great company of fellow travellers at the retreat :-)

"My first thought before I had even started listening to the first lecture was - what am I doing here? But right after the beginning I realized - I’m here to change my life. The whole course of the Five Elements lectures got me thinking about philosophical questions and raised many hidden and uncertain things in my head. I also started doing yoga - and that was an absolutely incredible experience. I not only felt calm and chilled but - I’ve never felt so healthy in my entire life! Thank you Marin for being the best teacher - in the right time and in the right place."

"I was a bit nervous about our windsurfing day. I wasn’t sure I would have the upper body strength or stamina but Marin assured me I would be fine. I am glad he insisted. I must admit as I paddled out in the sunshine looking down in the crystal clear water, how wonderful it felt to be in that moment and I was jittery with excitement. I did it! I had forgotten how good a physical challenge could be and proud to say I did not fall in and I felt the wind in the sail! Thank you Marin!"

"This was a great guest house with the wonderful hosts: Marin and Natalie. They made it very easy for us to go sea kayaking and take a windsurfing lesson, and gave us tips on what islands to go to. We had a great time exploring the numerous outdoor activities within walking distance from their guesthouse, but also enjoyed relaxing on the nice balcony of the earth room, using the outdoor kitchen, and hanging out with the hosts and other guests at a camp fire. I would recommend and return. Thanks!!"

"Marin and Natali are very open-hearted and generous people. The guesthouse was peaceful, and I was very happy there. The adventures were active and lots of fun! Marin’s true self comes alive when you spend time with him in the yoga studio. Even as a beginner, I could sense Marin’s years of experience in these spiritual practices through his guidance and instruction. My feelings after meditation are hard to describe, but one of the most eye-opening experiences in all of my travels."

"The guesthouse is very relaxing and comfortable, we felt at home during our stay. What I loved most was the common areas of the house (kitchen, outside seating area) where we could converse with Marin and other guests. We had so much to talk about and learn from Marin, and he was always so friendly and willing to answer our questions. He was eager to inform us about the best places to explore around Rovinj and even invited us to the beach to watch him and his friends play music under the full moon, although we never made it to the beach it was such a nice gesture! He also cooked some amazing dishes for us and was always interested to hear a little about our culture back home. If you're looking for somewhere peaceful with a small-town feel that is in walking distance to the waterfront and old town Rovinj, and a very welcoming host, this is the place for you :)"

"We had an amazing time at Marin's guesthouse. The apartment was huge, clean and had everything we needed. But most importantly, Marin is a lovely person with great knowledge about Rovinj and life itself. He showed us some remote parts of the city and was always happy to help out. Thank you for a great time!"

"We had a great stay at Marin's guesthouse. We stayed here for 10 days and we offered to use the bigger room with kitchen in the middle of the week. Rovinj is a really nice town and I think may was the perfect time to visit. The old town is a nice walk away, overall we had a great time here."

"Well, our experience in Rovinj at Marin's place could not be better! The yoga sessions in the morning were great, it was my first time and now i realize how good it did me and I want to continue. The place was perfect, we had more than we needed in the room and in the apartment. There is a beautiful kitchen, which makes you enjoy cooking. I liked it that it has a bit walking distance to the center, so you can enjoy the peace in that living area. But still, with bike you are in the center in 5 min. I loved to cycle every day along the coast especially to the south, there are really nice bike routes and interesting things to see. Marin is a really nice host, he did a lot for us, actually much more than he had to. He was more like a good friend than the owner of the place. He is very open and a nice company, too. We went to get apple strudel mornings from the bakery, which was the best ever! :) We were there at the end of march, it was still a bit cold but i can imagine how nice it should be to stay there in the summer and join their yoga workshops. Rovinj wouldn't have been so nice without Marin's place, so I recommend this place totally!! Thank you very much for everything."

  • Review by Adrinne from Lima, Peru

"I had a wonderful week stay at Marin's guesthouse. From the moment I arrived I was very impressed with how clean, new and comfortable the room was, down to the little details like a hair dryer, extra blankets (for cold April nights!) and plenty of space to store your belongings. The location, though a bit of a walk from the historic center was perfect - it gives you a reason to see the nice residential areas outside of the center (and gets you closer to grocery stores), and really you can easily get EVERYwhere in Rovinj by bike or foot. As I was here in low season it was very quiet but I can imagine how the place must really come alive in the summer! Marin was also a lovely host - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it or even return myself one day!"
