Flame Tree Cottages is a small beach hotel with an aura of tranquility and a feeling of spaciousness with its lush tropical garden lined with coconut palms, frangipani, and banana trees. Short steps at the front lead to the beach and to the turquoise blue of the Indian Ocean.
The Zanzibar Yoga Retreats are hosted at the Flame Tree Cottages which is a hotel visited by tourists of all kinds, not only yoga practitioners. It is situated in Nungwi, the northern tip of the island, which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar. It faces west for perfect sighting of the setting sun. To watch the sunset with the traditional fishing dhows sailing out to the fishing ground or coming back with their catch in the foreground is magical.
Flame Tree Cottages is within a close walk to numerous restaurants and bars. It has individually styled cottages with spacious rooms and large verandas. Breakfast is usually served on your own cottage veranda. All rooms have en-suire facilities, air conditioners, ceiling fans, and a refrigerator. Some cottages have a sitting room.
Relax in a hammock with a good book or sunbathe in the area facing the turquoise blue ocean and white beach, or just lounge around the swimming pool in the garden. The tropical garden has a mixture of coconut palms, casuarina trees, frangipani trees, banana trees, as well as flowerbeds full of colorful plants set amidst the lawns. The garden view rooms enjoy a country atmosphere with a bird song. An in-house dhow (traditional wooden boat) takes people for fishing, snorkeling, and sunset sails. For trips to Mnemba Island, a picnic lunch is provided. Hammocks and loungers are distributed in the sun bathing area and in the garden around the swimming pool.
Entering a meditative state of mind and being in the present moment. The fusion of yoga and diving can help you understand what meditation is and how you will be able to apply it in your daily life. Through diving, one can experience a moving meditative state, a sense of peace and connectedness with nature. As you float silently, weightless in the blue ocean and only hearing the sound of your breathing, you will realize the feeling of being in the present moment as you experience the sensation of being submerged in another environment. This sensation of hovering in mid-water is immensely liberating. It is like experiencing near-zero gravity in space. This natural tendency of entering a meditative state while diving helps us understand meditation better, which is one of the limbs of yoga practice.
The yoga classes are vibrant and include pranayama (breathing techniques), sun and moon salutations, as well as a dynamic flowing sequence of asanas (postures) bringing awareness into mindfulness and energy flow, followed by relaxation and a short meditation. The classes are suitable for all levels and variations given accordingly. Yoga groups are small which allows personal attention and adjustment.
Morning yoga sessions will take place in Under-the-Tree yoga studio with a beautiful sea view. Sunset yoga, on the other hand, takes place on the rooftop overlooking the ocean with the most spectacular sunsets.
Yoga is defined as a union between the soul and the body. As such, the breath is seen as the fundamental link between our physical and mental aspects. Yogic breathing exercises or pranayama teaches one how to re-energize the body and control the mind by regulating the flow of Prana (life force). We will practice Ujjayi Breathing (victorious breath), Kapalabhati (cleansing breath), and Analoma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing).
Meditation, like sleep, cannot be taught. It comes by itself in its own time. But if you follow the right steps to begin with, you can speed up your progress considerably. We will practice a short meditation session of 8-10 minutes after each yoga session. Some of the meditations will be guided meditations on the 7 chakras.
Zanzibar can be described as both mysterious and romantic. It is also the evocation of exotic, an archipelago nestled in the Indian Ocean which is 37 km off shore from Tanazania. It is a destination that is not only mysterious but legendary as well.

Zanzibar retains the imprint of its historic legacy in the tumbling streets of Stone Town, in the Arabic-inflected Swahili language and the rare antiques of the bazaars and markets.

Flame Tree Cottages, where in the yoga retreat will take place, is situated on the northwestern side of the Nungwi Peninsula on the north coast of Zanzibar. Nungwi is ideally situated for swimming and diving. You can see the most spectacular sunsets on this side of the island.
Breakfast will be provided. It is usually served on your own cottage veranda.
Flame Tree Cottages is within a close walk to numerous restaurants and bars. You may choose to eat lunch and dinner there.
You will be flying into and out of Zanzibar International Airport located in Kisauni.
