During this retreat, you will be staying at The Natural Retreat. There are three room options available for single, double, and triple occupancy.

The villa

Evening meals around the table in the rustic kitchen as an opportunity to socialize, coupled with the cool ambience of the shaded terraces and relaxation rooms; the villa provides a complement of social and private spaces to relax in.

The upper terrace raises you up above the tree with views of the distant ocean. Hammocks provide shelter from the midday sun and a quiet place to relax with a refreshing juice and a novel. The large terrace provides a private space for morning yoga, meditation, or star gazing.

The garden

Paths meander through the garden and encircle the house and solar heated pool, passing under mature sub-tropical trees and by sumptuous plants with colorful foliage and flowers. The trees provide welcome shade and the feeling of seclusion and tranquility. Within the land, there is a fabulously sculptured meditation garden. The natural earth paths blend beautifully into the surrounding natural space, passing the fire circle, 120 sitting stones, chakra snake, and pebble fountain.

The organic vegetable garden includes young fruit trees, fig, orange, lemon, apple, peach, apricot, plum, mulberry, berries, seasonal vegetable, and herbs. The garden is designed using permaculture techniques, a style of ecological planting which helps to work with the dry climate. There are also chickens that provide the free range eggs for your breakfast and natural spring water filtered from the well.

The pool

There is a 10 x 5 meter solar heated pool next to the villa with plenty of space to lounge in the sun.

There are two dates planned for this retreat. The first would be between September 24 - 30 2017 (Yoga with Joanna and Mindfulness for Creativity with Maggie), and the second would be between May 20 - 26, 2018 (Yoga with Michele and Mindfulness for Creativity with Maggie).

Mindfulness

Recent studies from Harvard and other prestigious institutions have shown that practicing mindfulness for just 12 minutes a day for eight weeks can show significant concentrations of brain cells in areas associated with sustained attention, emotional regulation, and perspective that take place in the prefrontal cortex.

The prefrontal cortex is also an indicator of happiness and well being and can also boost the immune system, meaning you are less likely to get colds and flu. It can also help you to recover more quickly from illnesses you do pick up.

Mindfulness has been endorsed by the National Health Service in UK as being effective for improving your physical and mental health. It offers you a means of coping with life’s challenges in a practical way and can lead you to a rich and fulfilling life. If you practice regularly, you will replace scattered thinking and habitual patterns with calm and spacious attention, allowing you to make the best decisions for yourself.

  • Maggie

    Maggie is a qualified mindfulness teacher and has been running mindfulness and yoga holidays for four years in Portugal, India, and next year Ireland. She teaches mindfulness meditation for stress reduction, a better well-being, and for creativity, as well as the art of breathing.

  • Michele Stein

    Michele has been teaching yoga for more than 20 years. Her style has evolved over the years to include Hatha yoga, Feldenkrais method, and somatic movement. Michele is a very experienced teacher and can provide alternative for all levels within her classes. She will be teaching between May 20 -26, 2018 in Portugal together with Maggie.

This retreat will take place in Salema, the Western Algarve, Portugal. Within a short walk you can find numerous small secluded bays or with more time you can enjoy the coastal paths leads in both directions, Lagos to the east or Sagres to the west. There are numerous trails suitable for mountain biking, which can lead you to explore the Atlantic coast and the interior of the peninsular.

The countryside has a wonderful myriad of wildlife; eagle owls, bee eater, nightingales, hoopies, and buzzards have all been sighted here. The sea birds make an amazing display of diving into the ocean. Along the coast, you can find mussels to pick on a full moon low tide, starfish, or very occasionally a cuttle fish. Dolphin may also swim by. This unspoilt haven is ideal for walking, mountain and road biking, and horse riding.

The nearest village is the picturesque fishing village of Salema, offering local fish from the boats which still get hauled up onto the sand in the early hours. Watching the moon rise over the ocean is a mesmerizing sight.

There are many beautiful experiences to discover, such as watching the sun rise while swimming in the sea or walking through the fields on a twilight evening breathing in the scent of the warm earth, while the long shadows create a magical atmosphere in the landscape. The remote location allows you the possibility to see the night sky in its full glory with a stillness broken by the occasional call of the night birds.

During this retreat, you will be served daily vegetarian brunch and dinner as well as fresh juice.

Take a surf class

You can enrich your retreat experience by taking surf classes. For 80 EUR, in a day you can have two surf sessions for approximately one and a half hours each, complete with surfing equipment such as surfboard and wetsuit, surf insurance, and transportation.

Take a trip to Lagos

As far as touristy towns go, Lagos has got the lot. It lies along the bank of the Rio Bensafrim, with 16th-century walls enclosing the old town’s pretty, cobbled lanes, and picturesque piazzas and churches. This trip costs 20 EUR.

Take a trip to Sagres

Take a trip on the extreme Western Edge of the Algarve for 30 EUR.

Other activities

You can rent bicycles if you'd like to explore the surrounding. Horse riding on the beach is available for 50 EUR.

Massage and Reiki healing sessions are available for an additional cost.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Faro Airport (FAO). Transfer from and to the airport is not included, but once you are in Salema, the transport to the venue can be arranged free of charge.
