During the retreat, you will be staying at La Cañada. It is situated on the southern hillside of Sierra Nevada in the Alpujarra and has two and a half hectares of green and fertile land because of the old watering system created by the Arabs. Here in the middle of hundred-years-old olive trees, oranges, and lemons, you will find four cozy and comfortable cottages.

Each cottage offers accommodation for four people. They have two bedrooms (each with two single beds), two bathrooms, and a covered porch. On hot summer days, you can refresh yourself in a big swimming pool with a special part for children.

Horses recognize emotions, fears, and blockages and react to them, which give you insight on how to get more harmony in your life. Because they are grounded and centered by their nature, they help you to be with your attention in the here and now. They help you develop inner strength and authenticity and show you the importance of your intentions.

Yoga and meditation with horses show how important the connection is between yourself and your environment to achieve your goals. You will create cooperation in respectful communication in a non-verbal way. In this retreat, you will also explore inner attitude, inner silence, relaxation, centering, grounding, balance, breathing, body posture, building up of confidence, non-verbal communication, tenderness, and clearness.

It is not important if you have previous experience with horses, yoga, or meditation because there is a lot of individual attention for everybody and your groups are small. You will go at your own pace and you will be able to anchor your personal experiences and return home feeling more grounded, refreshed, and balanced.

Yoga is for everyone, as it is not about getting postures picture perfect, but finding peace within yourself. When you do yoga regularly, it helps you to find a relaxed, open radiant presence in the center of your hectic life.

The underlying principle is that yoga is "meditation in motion". The emphasis is on working within your own body to de-stress and regulate the internal systems, ultimately coming into a state of conscious bliss. There will also be a range of holistic therapies available during your week with SunFoodYoga at an additional cost. Every day, you will have a coaching session with Kim and her horse, and a yoga and meditation session with Tara.

After you get home, you will be invited to a private Facebook group where you can keep in touch with your new made friends, swap stories, and keep everyone in the loop with your triumphs and challenges. You will also have an additional 20-minute session with Tara in the months following, so you can make sure you are still on track with everything you have learned.

Daily itinerary

Day 1

Today is the arrival day. The program starts at 5:00 p.m. with a juice and a sharing circle. At 7:00 p.m., you will have a dinner.

Day 2 - Day 6

Every day, you will have a coaching session with Kim and her horses, and a yoga and meditation session with Tara.

Day 7

Today is the departure day. You will finish with a sharing circle and breakfast at 9:00 a.m.

  • Tara Esther Kleij

    Tara was born in Holland. In 1991, she became a certified rebirther in Haarlem and in 1995, she finished an intensive four-year massage training learning classical massage, rebalancing, and Shiatsu. She learned Thai-yoga massage in Thailand and Ayurvedic yoga massage in India. She likes to share the knowledge of this ancient practice and intermix it with a mantra and pranayama. She uses alignment principles and fun to bring in her own unique teaching style. She specializes in Hatha yoga, Flow yoga, Yin yoga, meditation and pranayama, and teach for over 25 years.

The retreat will take place near a small village called Orgiva, in the Alpujarra mountain area of Andalusia. This region is renowned for its great natural beauty of snow-covered high mountain peaks, rushing rivers, wildflowers, sightings of eagles, as well as the goat herds. White painted villages cling to the mountain side.

Spain's highest mountains, Sierra Nevada, are a magnificent backdrop to this partly undiscovered area of Spain. The region has dramatic and enchanting valleys, forests, vineyards, waterfalls, rivers and picturesque white mountain villages, all with about 325 days of sunshine per year. You can see oranges, lemons, figs and ancient olive trees with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and there is a special light that makes it a painter's and writer's paradise.

During the retreat, you will be served a nourishing healthy whole food diet, which will do more healing from the inside out. All food is gluten, sugar, and lactose-free, using only delicious homemade meals, fresh, and organically grown ingredients.

Breakfast can be anything from almond milk with granola, banana pancakes to crackers with avocado, and cashew cheese with a smoothie prepared with superfoods. You will create lots of delicious meals together, including soup, sushi, lasagna, and desserts. You will then get to eat what you have created. Detailed recipes will be provided for you to take home. Exotic fruits, like mangoes, papayas, figs, and more can be taken throughout the day.

From the retreat center, you can explore the area by making a walk along the riverbed, just stroll down from the retreat center. Horse riding and biking are also possible. There are also a lot of local produce, such as wine, goat cheese, olives and oil, honey, dried figs, and organically grown vegetables. The local market on Thursdays in the town of Orgiva is lively and cosmopolitan, and also attracts artists and a variety of therapists. A good massage is also available after all the exercise. Trips up the mountain can also be arranged.

Go to nearby beaches

There are several beaches on the Mediterranean coast to be enjoyed, within a 45-minute drive from Orgiva. The nearest beach would be at the foot of Salobrena, a white washed village built around a castle upon a rock in the Gualdafeo river plain. Next along the boulevards of Almunecar, which also has a Moorish castle, there are plenty of souvenir shops and markets.

Slightly further towards Malaga, just past La Herradura, there is a nudist beach Cantarijan nestled in natural surroundings, rock cliffs, trees, and two charming beach restaurants only. For the adventurous, there is a possibility for an hour's walk along the coast over the outcrops to the next beach too.

Take a bath in Lanjaron Spa

Lanjaron is a charming small village, located just 20 minutes away from the retreat center. Mainly famous for its pure spring water that sells all over Spain, it has some mineralized springs that serve for drinking therapies. Recently added is a luxury spa hotel Balneario de Lanjaron, which also offers sauna and massage treatments. It is also a great village to get local cheese, olive oil, chocolate, and other souvenirs.

Visit Buddhist retreat center, O-Sel-Ling

O-Sel-Ling is located on a quiet mountain slope, high above the Alpujarra valley, with views of white mountain villages, and on clear days al the way down to the sea and Morocco. It is a center for meditation in the Mahayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. With a huge prayer wheel and Tara statue in a pond, the place vibrates with an inspiring mix of meditative practice and nature's beauty calm.

Visit Granada city

The fairy tale city of Granada crowned by the magnificent Alhambra Palace is an hour's bus or car ride away. It is a lovely medieval city to explore, located on one of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and contains a ski resort with the highest peak in Spain, the Mulhacen.

You can visit the famous Alhambra, a fabulous medieval palace, built by the Arabs and the Generalife summer palace, with its lush gardens with beautiful fountains and tranquil ponds. Their gypsy quarter is also a great place to visit with lots of flamenco music and tapas bars. You can also get yourself pampered in the warm baths of a Hammam with beautiful colors, sensual shapes and a peaceful atmosphere that transport you back to the bygone Moorish days.

Visit mountain villages

You can visit the picturesque white mountain villages in the Poquera Valley. Pampaneira, Bubion, and Capileira are worth a visit. They all sell local produce, food, wine, and carpets, and have some lovely terraces with incredible views. There is also a mountain spring beyond Capileira where you can swim in natural stone pools and stand under waterfalls. There are also beautiful walks to be made from there.

Driving directions from Malaga Airport (AGP)

  • On leaving the airport, follow signs for Malaga and then signs for Sevilla, Cordoba, Granaa, Almeria, and Motril (A7).
  • After about 10 kilometers, the motorway splits into two motorways.
  • Keep to the left on the A7 in the direction of Almeria and Motril.
  • Do not follow signs for Cordoba, Sevilla, and Granada, you are on the Autovia del Meditaraneo driving east along the side of the sea.
  • The name changes to Autovia de Sierra Nevada and you are now driving North and inland.
  • Continue on this motorway until junction 175, about 20 kilometers from the coast, and turn off in the direction of Orgiva and Las Alpujarras.
  • The slip road brings you down hill to the large dam and roundabout where you turn right towards Orgiva.
  • Keep going until you go through a tunnel, then turn left over the River Guadalfeo towards Orgiva.
  • When you enter Orgiva, you will see a supermarket called "DIA" on your right side, after that, there is a bus stop and then a road on the right going straight up.
  • Take that road and follow it, pass the school on your left side until you come to a junction, take the road to the right saying: Tijola.
  • Drive this road for about one and a half kilometers, and when you pass the dry river bed, you will see a green sign saying: Cortigo Romero.
  • Go onto this dirt track and follow until the end, you will see two black gates open and a sign saying: La Canada.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Málaga Airport (AGP). For one-way transfer, the cost is 35 EUR per person with three people share. With two people share, it comes to 45 EUR each way per person, and when it is only one person, it costs 80 EUR. Transfers are not included in the price and are paid in cash to the driver.

On your arrival day, the transfers are arranged between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. When booking your flight, please choose a flight that lands not later than 14:30 p.m., to give you adequate time to get to the meeting point outside terminal three.

On your departure day, the transfers will be at 10:00 a.m. onwards, and you will arrive two hours later. If your flight departure time is quite late, you might prefer to go to the beach, which takes about 10 minutes by taxi, bus, or train.

Arrival by bus

There is one direct bus to Orgiva, leaving at 3:00 p.m. from Malaga bus station and arriving at Orgiva at 6:00 p.m., stopping at every little village along the way. It is lovely when you want to see a little more from the coast of Spain.

As you come out of the terminal into the paved area into the outside air, just walk straight ahead to you underneath the overhead building. Take the "A" bus, ask for Estacion de Auto buses. The "A" bus runs about every 35 minutes. Don't be tempted to get on a free bus that uses the stop, it is the wrong one, goes to parking lot.

There are direct buses from Malaga airport to Granada bus station without having to go first to Malaga bus station:

Busses from Malaga Airport (AGP) to Granada depart at 8:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 4:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. with a journey time of two and a half hours. The fare is 11.43 EUR or 13.72 EUR each way depending on the bus.

Once at the bus station, you will need to buy a ticket for a coach to either Orgiva or Granada depending on which of the two onward routes that you choose. Buy your ticket from the "ALSA" window.
