You will enjoy an authentic Japanese experience as you will stay in a traditional Japanese temple. Dai Hon Zan Myo Shinji is a temple where Buddhist monks used to live but now open for special groups. Comfortable beds are Japanese style on the floor. All rooms are shared rooms as well as the toilets and bathrooms. The room is large and equipped with air-conditioning and a kotatsu heater. All bathrooms are shared.The building is made of timber and allows you to feel that you are really staying in a temple.

Myoshinji is the head temple of the Myoshinji school with over 3000 affiliated temples and calls itself the largest of all Zen temples. Myoshinji was founded in 1337 when an abdicated emperor had an imperial villa converted into a Zen temple. Daishinin temple is the smallest of the four sub-temples but has an attractive rock garden and beautiful rooms.

Ashtanga yoga

The Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is a style of yoga codified and popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois during the twentieth century which is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga. Ashtanga means eight limbs or branches, of which asana or physical yoga posture is merely one branch, breath or pranayama is another.

Teachers and guides

Govinda will start to teach from September 27, 2018. You can check-in the hotel from September 26 to September 27. You will have some time for settling in. Begum will be the assistant of Govinda. She will be there for anything guests need. She will be a translator and a guide for the city as well. Sight-seeing will be arranged and if you are coming to Japan alone, afraid of being a stranger, you will definitely won't be. This retreat will change you completely.

Daily sample schedule

  • 06:00 - 08:00 Yoga asana (Ashtanga yoga)
  • 09:00 - 10:00 Brunch/ lunch will be served
  • 16:00 - 18:00 Chanting/ lecture time (four sessions)
  • 19:00 - 20:00 Dinner will be served

You will have the chance to explore the culture and beauty of Kyoto as some days will be spent on sightseeing and a walking tour of Arashiyama in Kyoto as arranged by Shivani Yoga Center.

Begum Gulderen
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200 (Yoga)
Begum Gulderen is the owner of the first Shivani Life Center, in North Cyprus. She started practicing yoga during her travels, at the very early age of 17 and at 21, she started learning and teaching yoga in Asia. She worked as a teacher at one of the most well-known yoga resorts in Goa, India. Begum is now based in Istanbul, Turkey, and enjoys sharing her teaching with people from all nations. She has arranged and directed yoga retreats in India, Japan, Turkey, and Cyprus along with yoga workshops. She is also a certified Pilates teacher, a Feng Shui specialist, and a Thai massage therapist.
Govinda Kai
Govinda Kai has been involved in Martial arts, meditative disciplines, and yoga for over 20 years. He spent two years studying Tibetan Buddhism under the tutelage of Sogyal Rinpoche (author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying), and also studied Aikido with some of the foremost instructors in the world. He is one of the few teachers in the world who received certification to teach the Astanga Vinyasa Yoga system directly by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. His quest for truth and purity in the more essential parts of his self and life has taken him all over the world.

During this retreat, you will stay in Kyoto. Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is a city on the island of Honshu with a population close to 1.5 million people. It’s famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines, and traditional wooden houses. The city is also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes and geisha, female entertainers often found in the Gion district.

Kyoto is full of temples, shrines, gardens, and castles. Japan's cherry blossoms are famous all the world over, but the fall foliage in Kyoto is perhaps even more beautiful. You will have the chance to see the autumn colors in Kyoto at its best.

  • Myoshinji is a ten minutes walk from J.R. Hanazano station and just five minutes from Keifuku train line's Myoshinji station
