Cusco, also spelled as Cuzco, is a city in Southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco region and the Cusco Province. Located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cusco, its elevation is around 3,400 meters. Cusco was the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a world heritage site in 1983 by UNESCO.
It is a major tourist destination and receives almost two million visitors a year. It is designated as the historical capital of Peru by the constitution of Peru. From Cusco, one can travel to the Sacred Valley and the villages there, as well as many other places in Peru. Plaza De Armas, San Pedro Market, Qurikancha, Convent of Santo Domingo, Intipanpa, Church of la Compañía de Jesus, and all the Inca markets are worth visiting.
Lares hot springs are located in the Sacred Valley. The drive up to Lares is spectacular. You will see snow-capped peaks, lakes, mountains, animal herds, and indigenous people. It will be an amazing journey.
Machu Picchu is the symbol of Peru and the Inca Empire itself, with a world-famous sacred site and heritage site. It was declared a Peruvian historical sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is also considered one of the new seven wonders of the world.
Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. Next to Machu Picchu, you will find Huyana Picchu, a very special mountain situated on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley. It is 80 kilometers northwest of Cusco and the Urubamba River flows through it.
Moray or Muray is an archaeological site in Peru approximately 50 kilometers northwest of Cusco and west of Maras. The site contains unusual Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several enormous terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is about 30 meters deep. The purpose of these depressions is uncertain.
The depth and orientation of the depressions with respect to wind and sun create a temperature difference of as much as 15 degrees Celsius between the top and bottom. This large temperature difference was possibly used to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. As other Inca sites, it has a sophisticated irrigation system.
Ollantaytambo is a town and an Inca archaeological site in southern Peru, about 60 kilometers northwest of Cusco. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and built the town and a ceremonial center.
At the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru, it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance. Now, it is an important tourist attraction on account of its Inca buildings and as one of the most common starting points for the hike known as the Inca Trail.
Písac, Pisaq, or P'isaq is a Peruvian village in the Sacred Valley on the Urubamba River. This place is very special and traditional Inca village. There is also a growing community of people from many countries living in the Sacred Valley and Pisac is a center for healing and therapies.
The village also has a fantastic market where you can get everything, from jewelry, alpaca products, crystals, woven handicrafts, and more. It also has some good restaurants, including some vegetarian ones, and you can buy organic food too.
Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water from a local subterranean stream. The highly salty water emerges at a spring, then the flow is directed into an intricate system of tiny channels constructed so that the water runs gradually down onto the terraced ponds. Almost all the ponds are less than four meters square in area and none exceeds thirty centimeters in depth.
All are shaped into polygons with the flow of water carefully controlled and monitored by workers. The altitude of the ponds decreases slowly, so that the water may flow through the myriad branches of the water-supply channels and be introduced through a notch.
As water evaporates from the sun-warmed ponds, the water becomes over saturated and salt precipitates as crystals onto the inner surfaces. The pond's keeper then closes the water-feeder notch and allows the pond to go dry. Within a few days, the dry salt can be scraped off. The salt mines have been available to any person wishing to harvest salt.
For this retreat, you will be served deliciously cooked and raw vegan meals with local and mostly organic ingredients. Only four meals during visits to Machu Picchu and other places are not included. Please let Sacred Journeys know in advance if you have other diary restrictions and they will assist you. Sacred Journeys have experienced that hardly anyone misses meat because the food is so delicious. However, there are cafes around and when we eat out it will be possible to purchase other food.
There is an optional trip to the amazing, natural hot springs Lares high up in the Andes prior to retreat start. They also offer a 7 days magical meditation retreat to Lake Titicaca and its sacred places just after the 13- days retreat. A discount applies if you register for both retreats. Additional plant ceremonies are possible, as well as addition theta healing sessions and massage. If you need further travel guidance and help, they are happy to offer that.
During the retreat we will visit a natural sauna with singing, fire, tea from local medicinal herbs, as well as the possibility for a shower and lovely company. It is also possible to book private massages as well as do theta healing sessions and other sessions.
