The guests will be staying at a beautifully renovated home in the trendy Ocean Park neighborhood of San Juan. This gorgeous home is steps away from the beach, where you will begin your mornings with a yoga and meditation practice. This house is also only a few blocks away from the popular Parquecito del Indio, a charming park that connects to Ocean Park beach. The house has A/C and wifi access. There is a 24/7 grocery and convenience store walking distance from the house.

The retreat includes two yoga classes a day, two vegetarian or vegan meals a day prepared by local chefs, daily cultural activities where guests can learn from the history of Bomba to Puerto Rican cuisine. Guests will also be spending time in the rainforest experiencing some of the best nature the island has to offer.

Bomba workshops with Taller Tambuyé

Bomba is a traditional music and dance created by African slaves in Puerto Rico. Bomba spread throughout the island and different styles developed. As part of the retreat, you will be offered an interactive workshop, taught by Taller Tambuyé, where you can learn about the history of Bomba and get to dance to the music of live drums. Taller Tambuyé will provide you with the skirts to wear while learning to dance Bomba.

Daily beach trips

In addition to your morning yoga and meditation classes, guests can spend their afternoons relaxing at Ocean Park Beach, which is a few steps away from the house. Guests can also explore Old San Juan, a 500-year old city. A daily shuttle is provided from Ocean Park to Old San Juan.

El Yunque National Rainforest, La Mina Falls, Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve and Balneario de Luquillo

As part of the retreat, guests will experience a nature. You will be visiting El Yunque National Rainforest, Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve and El Balneario de Luquillo Beach. El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the United States national forest system. Located in Northeastern Puerto Rico, El Yunque which encompasses 29,000 acres is considered as one of the most biologically diverse national forests in the United States. At El Yunque, you will hike La Mina Trail, which follows the course of La Mina River through lush tropical trees, shrubs, and flowers. This short hike ends at La Mina Falls, a gorgeous 35-feet high waterfall with a pool where you can swim or simply enjoy the view. You will be served a lovely lunch there provided by Que Viva Foods. After a visit to Las Cabezas de San Juan and the Balneario de Luquillo Beach, guests can visit the Kioskos de Luquillo, an area by the beach with food stands serving seafood, Puerto Rican food, and piña coladas.

  • Jendar Morales

    Jendar Marie Morales was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has studied various styles of yoga including Bikram, Kundalini, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Hatha. She is now a Yoga Alliance Registered master teacher focusing on Hatha, Vinyasa, and Restorative styles of yoga. In addition to her yoga studies, Jendar holds an MA in museum studies from New York University. She currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she helps run the University of Utah Yoga Teacher Training and teaches yoga all around the city.

The retreat will take place in a gorgeous home at the Ocean Park neighborhood of San Juan, only a block away from the beach. Known in Spanish as El Viejo San Juan, this charming city is known for its blue cobblestone streets, colorful centuries old buildings, and impressive fortifications. Old San Juan is considered as the cultural capital of the island because of its museums, historic sites, restaurants, plazas, and unique architecture.

Raíces Yoga and Culture Retreat will be partnering with Que Viva Foods to provide you with two daily wonderful vegetarian or vegan meals. Que Viva Foods is a Puerto Rican team of culinary professionals with a passion for preserving the nutritional integrity food. Melissa Montañez, the chef for Que Viva Foods, will be preparing the meals on site using only locally grown and organic ingredients of the highest quality. Melissa will also be teaching an interactive Puerto Rican cooking class.
