During this retreat, you will be staying at Loutraki Bay, near Chania, in Crete, Greece. Nestled on the northern shores of Souda Bay, the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean, Loutraki is a hidden gem in Northwest Crete. A former pirate hideaway, Loutraki Bay is an oasis of calm.
Chania is Crete’s most evocative city, with its pretty Venetian quarter, crisscrossed by narrow lanes, culminating at a magnificent harbor. Remnants of Venetian and Turkish architecture abound, with old townhouses now restored, transformed into atmospheric restaurants and boutique hotels.
The city of Chania is built on the ruins of ancient Kydonia, which according to the mythology was founded by King Kydon and was one of the most important cities in Crete. The city is mentioned in the work of famous ancient Greek writer, Homer. In addition, given the long occupation by the Venetians and the Ottoman Empire, Chania is a wonderful mix of eastern and western civilizations.
A stroll around the old harbor is a must for any visitor to Chania. Pastel-colored historic homes and businesses line the harbor, zigzagging back into narrow lanes lined with shops. The entire area is surrounded by impressive Venetian fortifications and the 1.5-kilometer walk around the sea wall to the Venetian lighthouse is well worth the effort. On the eastern side of the inner harbor, the prominent Mosque of Kioutsouk Hasan houses regular exhibitions.
The best-preserved section of the massive outer fortifications is the western wall, running from the Firkas Fortress, an old Turkish prison at the western tip of the harbor, to the Siavo Bastion. It was part of a defensive system constructed in 1538 by the engineer Michele Sanmichele, who also designed Heraklion’s defences. Entrance to the fortress is via the gates next to the Naval Museum. From the top of the bastion, you can enjoy fine views of the old town.
Balos is surely the most photographed beach in Crete and a favorite subject of all tourist guides for Greece. Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, the wild natural beauty, and the beautiful exotic scenery. The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, vivid blue, and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm and in many places, the sand has a lovely pinkish color because of millions of crushed shells.
Beyond the rocks at the boundaries of the lagoon, the water is deeper and colder, ideal for a snorkeling. The lagoon and the wider area, with rare species of flora and fauna, are protected under the Natura 2000 program. Eleonora falcons, shags, and cormorants nest in the caves of the area. Moreover, the area is a shelter for the protected monk seal and the sea turtle Caretta caretta.
You will be provided with traditional Cretan breakfast and dinner, which are the original Mediterranean diet. Both meals are vegetarian and the food is prepared with fresh local products. Allergies or dietary requirements can be accommodated.
During your retreat, you will receive a free massage.
Please book your flight to arrive at Chania International Airport, "Daskalogiannis" (CHQ). Transfer to and from this airport is included in the price. PaddleboardYoga Chania will pick you up from the airport.
Ferries sail to and from Athens (Pireaus) daily. You can arrive at the port by bus or taxi from Athens International Airport (ATH). The port for ferries in Chania is at Souda Bay. PaddleboardYoga Chania will pick you up from the port. The pick-up is included in the price.
