Akshitarpana (Netrabasti); the eye treatment in Ayurveda

Akshitarpana is the use of medicated ghee on eyes. The ghee is applied over the closed eyes for a certain period of time, and then removed. It strengthens the ocular nerves, and also is helpful in correcting eye defects. This is a very good treatment for eyes tired after working long hours on the computer.

The treatment starts with a gentle massage of the head, eye, and face. It helps to increase blood flow in veins and then ghee is applied to closed eyes. Once the ghee settles on the yes the person, is required to close and open eyes many times and then ghee is removed.

Ayurvedic facial therapy

This facial is not just about creams and packs, it is much more. This facial takes care of acne, scars, and black and white patch formation. Such is the benefit of the Ayurvedic facial massage, that in fact the massage is more of a therapy with the first thing being testing the skin type.

Ayurvedic Kerala massage and Abhyanga

The whole body massage from Ayurveda relaxes the body and mind. If you are in stress, this massage will help you for sure. It is performed by trained therapists using herbal oils as per body type. The treatment helps relax the body and mind. You will have the feeling of calmness and surge in energy levels after the massage. The massage is popular worldwide as Ayurvedic Kerala massage because most of Ayurveda centers are in Kerala.

Kati basti; a special way to treat the lower back

Ayurveda has a special treatment called kati basti. Kati stands for lower back and basti for retention. The treatment is to rejuvenate and retain the strength of the lower back on which the whole body weight is. The lumbo sacral therapy is done using hot oil and herbal decoctions. The treatment achieves local oleation which means addition of fat for making the tissues supple and also sudation which is removing excessive salt from the body.

Shirodhara; the liquid pouring treatment for the head

Shirodhara is the pouring of medicated oil, milk, or buttermilk on the forehead for a specific time period. The liquid is made to drip exactly on the forehead for the best results. When oil is used it is also called thaila dhara, and when milk or buttermilk is used, it is called ksheera dhara. The therapy is done with help of two people. One of them holds the vessel which is for pouring the liquid on the forehead.

The liquid is collected after the drip in a vessel and it is again put in the dripping vessel by the other person. This treatment is a great way to relax the mind and particularly the nerves in the brain.

Swedana; herbal steam bath

This steam treatment in Ayurveda is known as swedana. Sweda is derived from "swid" which in Sanskrit means to sweat. During this treatment Herbal steam bath is used to induce sweating. It has been proven by research that sweating detoxifies the body. It is process generally done after an oil massage. The swedana treatment detaches the toxins from tissues, and then can be removed from the body by natural process. Special herbs are used to induce sweating and detoxifying in this Ayurvedic therapy.

Udhwarthanam; the Ayurvedic herbal powder massage

This massage uses medicated powder of choicest herbs for massage. There are two methods of treatment. The first method is to make a paste with water. This paste is applied all over the body and the allowed to dry and once the paste has dried, the remaining powder is rubbed all over the body. The mixture used in Pozhikizhi is used in this treatment too.

The second method involves drying the powder using heat and heat is applied to the powder kept in an earthen pot. The dried powder is then applied all over the body except the head starting from feet and ending at the neck. The movement of the massage is circular and the effect of the massage is phenomenal.

Extra curricular activities such as short mountain trekking and river rafting are included in this retreat depending on seasonal feasibility.

    Naveen Raj is also known as Yogi Naveen. He is from Kshatriya family and a spiritual seeker. To him, life is the subject of self research. He has also been trained in Bihar School of Yoga, Munger and Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy, and in the Divine life society Rishikesh to deepen his understandings of yoga philosophy and practices.
