The rooms at the Doron Yoga and Zen Center (DYZC) in Tzununa are simple but beautiful, rustic, yet charming. Located up the hill from Lake Atitlan, coffee, banana, and other trees and lush vegetation abound on the DYZC’s grounds.

All DYZC accommodations are brand new and built for comfort and safety while being ecological. The base for all rooms is a stone wall made of stones from the land held strongly together with concrete. The other walls are from wood, or at times bricks to have better sound insulation between rooms. The showers have hot water and there are western toilets (eco treatment). The water source is from a spring supplied by the municipality and from river water that runs through the property.

DYZC will give you a local experience, using local fabrics, building with natural materials, eco-friendly materials, and following permaculture principles. However, DYZC made sure you will feel at home and hope you will love this unique experience as much as Doron Yoga loves creating it.

There are two types of accommodation. Casa Feliz is equipped by shared bathroom and Casa Lotus with private bathroom. Please note there are two cute cats and a lovely puppy in the DYZC center.

This 300-hour Doron Vinyasa yoga teacher training is the next step on your teaching path. First of all, it is catered for those wanting to deepen their understanding of yoga on all its facets, then it is designed to improve teaching skills, and last it is meant to help you with the business of yoga.

Many parts of the training are meant to help you navigate your individual path of yoga - both personally and as a teacher. Doron Yoga will help you craft your business plan and teaching methods, to make you a powerful, strong, and sustainable teacher - mentally and economically.

Curriculum

Asana technique and teaching methods

You will cover all major poses taught in yoga classes, their alignment principles, correct breathing, drsti and transitioning, as well as, modifications, adjustments, physical risks, emotional and energetic effects, counter poses, and assists. You will cover the warm ups, sun salutations, standing poses, balancing poses, core strengthening, arm balancing, hip openers, back bends, forward folds, inversions, twists, and savasana.

Practical yoga history and philosophy

Learn the first two chapters of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in-depth. You will cover the spiritual psychology as well as the layers of samadhi. You will look at the different types of yoga that the Bhagavad Gita teaches, as well as how to use them in classes and life. You will look at the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, touch on Jnana yoga, practice Bhakti yoga, and look at the four noble truths of Buddhism.

Practical yoga anatomy

Learn the correct and safe alignment for the all the main poses. Understand the spine movements in a variety of poses, the importance of the hips and how they affect the rest of the body, the functioning of the entire core area, and the relationship between the different body parts. Understand improved alignment for a sustainable practice.

Advanced class planning and sequencing

Learn to sequence for different level classes, from beginners to advanced. Learn to create classes according to the season, the environment, the audience, and the intention. Refine time management.

Pranayama, practice, and teaching

Dive deeper into the practice of pranayama. Learn the basics of the breathing practices for yourself as well as how to teach it to others. Learn to create full pranayama practices and how to sequence them for different levels.

Subtle energy and anatomy

Understand the chakras and their practical implementations as tools for assessing your body and mind. Go deeper into the subtleties of your body, and how it relates to outer energies. Understand the koshas, chakras, nadis, vayus, and gunas.

Meditation practices

Learn advanced meditation practices and investigate how to create quicker results. Explore solutions for the Citta vrttis, learn how to deal with resistance, and Zen versus yoga versus Tibetan.

Ayurveda and the yoga lifestyle

Yoga beyond the mat. Learn how to set practical systems in order to keep the practice alive. Learn about tongue scraping and oil pulling and about the use of neti pot. Refine your knowledge of yourself, your body, and mind using the Ayurvedic health system. Learn how to use this system to work with other friends and family. Create systems for them and understand how to offer them diet and lifestyle improvements.

Ethics and relating to students

Yoga ethics goes beyond sexual conduct. There are implications to how you speak to students, how to sell your classes, and how to use language and touch. Establishing of priorities and boundaries. Understand your dharma and set new standards for you as a teacher.

Observation and critical thinking

Observe classes as well as other teachers in the program and learn to understand both the students as well as the teachers. Learn observation techniques in order to read bodies and know how to adjust and modify accordingly.

Demonstration and proper language

Learn how to demonstrate correctly, how to explain and teach poses while demonstrating, and how to choose the right language to make it crystal clear to the student how to achieve what you are explaining. Learn how to incorporate humor in class and do it in a non-offensive way. It is an art to explain poses in a way that the student actually gets it, and this may be one of the greatest secrets (after sequencing, humor, and hands-on) why students will follow you.

Hands-on assists and verbal cues

Learn precise hand on assists, when to use them and how. Learn a variety of verbal cues, how and when to use them, and how to combine them with hands-on assists.

Teaching practice

You are already probably teaching classes. Now you will get to share your experience teaching and get direct mentoring to understand the little differences that make or break a class. Get insight on how to improve your classes, use better language, or demonstration.

The business of yoga

You are a teacher and you need to make a living. Learn how to teach privates, how to plan and lead a retreat or a workshop, how to get classes, and how to manage online media, from web to YouTube.

Practice, mentoring, and apprenticing

Practice hours

You will have 20 practice classes of 30 to 40 hours.

Mentored teaching

You are required to be teaching your own classes. In doing so, you will be mentored through weekly exchanges with Doron and faculty, via in-person conversations, Skype, or email exchanges regarding any questions or issues that may come up in your teaching.

Apprenticing

Observing and assisting classes of Doron or other approved teachers. Includes review with the teacher.

Thesis - in-depth study

This program offers you an opportunity to go deeper are really master an area of yoga that is especially interesting for you as a teacher. You will choose a topic for research, in-depth study, and thesis. Doron and faculty will help you design a format that will work for you. This may include readings, elective workshops, self-study, study groups, and writing.

This schedule is given as a guide to help you to envisage your time. In practice, it will vary according to the focus of the week, to accommodate specific teachings, and to adapt to the best interests of the course. Sundays are free.

    Doron es un instructor certificado de yoga de 550 horas también es el director de Doron Yoga School y fundador de Doron Yoga & Zen Center en Guatemala. Es el autor de The Yoga Lifestyle. Doron conoció el yoga y la meditación en 1992 mientras estudiaba y trabajaba en el este por dos años. Located a short walk from Lake Atitlan in the small Mayan village of Tzununa, Guatemala, the Doron Yoga and Zen Center’s grounds naturally grow coffee, banana, avocado, and other trees. Near to the small Tzununa River - the river of hummingbirds and water - that flows through the property are herb and vegetable gardens, a large chicken coop, plenty of grounds for the dog and cats to play, and a fire pit to enjoy on chilly evenings.

The yoga shala (practice space) and all other buildings at the center are built for comfort and safety while being ecological. Unlike many ashrams, the center does not cut corners and invests in good quality earthen construction and facilities.

All buildings have stone foundations reaching deep into the earth for increased stability. The cane, cyprus, pine, and rocks used in the construction are locally sourced, where local community workers built each house with care. Permaculture principles are followed to ecologically enhance the quality of the construction, and design functionality of the center.

Two buffet-style meals will be served each day. The menu is a mix of international, Guatemalan, and Doron’s special healthy, yummy, and Mediterranean touch made from fresh local produce, organic when available.

Each meal is substantial, varied, and nourishing, to energize you through your practices without leaving you feeling too heavy. All food at the Doron Yoga and Zen Center is prepared as healthily and nutritiously as possible under the guidance of the DYZC's founder and director, who is also a trained chef and certified nutrition consultant.

To the greatest extent possible, food is organic and locally sourced, including from the center's own blossoming gardens. Please let the Doron Yoga know if you have any food allergies or special dietary restrictions. If possible, carry any food that may be specific to your dietary requirement.

The DYZC is located in Tzununa, which is surrounded by hills on Lake Atitlan with great views of the volcanoes on the other side of the lake. Hiking, swimming, and kayaking opportunities can be found around the village, which also has a dock where local lanchas (boat taxis) stop every 20 to 40 minutes to take you to explore other towns around the lake.

San Marcos, the closest town over, can also be reached by foot along a dirt road. There, trainees can relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants or partake in an array of healing offerings, including shamanism, cacao ceremonies, Reiki, massage, and much more.

Among others, San Pedro, a short ride to the other side of the lake, has more of a vibrant backpacker’s vibe and is a little less expensive. On either end of your training, the nearby cities of Antigua and Quetzaltenango (commonly known as Xela) are only a few hours away and worth the visit.

If you are interested in a massage, the Doron Yoga and Zen Center can arrange for a masseuse to come to the DYZC. Tibetan singing bowl chakra and physical balancing treatments and massages are available at the DYZC. All treatment costs will be at the student's expense.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at La Aurora International Airport (GUA) before noon on the first day of the course, as Doron Yoga can then arrange an optional (additional fee) group shuttle to leave the airport at noon. The shuttle arrives at Panajachel, followed by a boat ride to Tzununa. Once in Tzununa, locals know DYZC as Casa Doron Yoga, you can take a five-minute tuk-tuk ride from the dock that costs less than 1 USD.
