Are you interested in deepening your yoga practice and / or becoming a yoga teacher? Join the Doron Yoga & Zen Center's 200-hour teacher training course at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. The curriculum includes asana, pranayama, meditation, philosophy, Ayurveda, food / nutrition, the yoga lifestyle, and more. This training is suitable for Yoga Alliance RYT eligibility. You will have a great yoga experience as well as enjoy the beauty of Guatemala at the same time.
The rooms at the Doron Yoga & Zen Center (DYZC) in Tzununa are simple but beautiful, rustic, yet charming. Located up the hill from Lake Atitlan, coffee, banana and other trees and lush vegetation abound on the DYZC’s grounds. All DYZC accommodations are brand new and built for comfort and safety while being ecological. The base for all rooms is a stone wall made of stones from the land held strongly together with concrete.
The other walls are of wood, or at times bricks when DYZC seeks to have better sound insulation between rooms. The showers have hot water and DYZC has western toilettes (eco treatment). The water source is from a spring supplied by the municipality and from river water that runs through the property. The dormitory sleeps six people and shares the bathroom area (three western-style toilets, two showers, and two sinks) with 16 people.
DYZC tries to give you a local experience, using local fabrics, building with natural and eco-friendly materials, following permaculture principles. However, DYZC can make sure you will feel at home and hope you will love this unique experience as much as they love creating it. The yoga shala (practice space) and all other buildings at the center are built for comfort and safety while being ecological.
Unlike many ashrams, Doron Yoga does not cut corners and invested in good quality earthen construction and facilities. All buildings have stone foundations reaching deep into the earth for increased stability.
The cane, Cyprus, pine, and rocks used in the construction are locally sourced where local community workers built each house with care. Permaculture principles are followed to ecologically enhance the quality of the construction, garden, and design functionality of the center. The rooms there are divided into rooms with private bathrooms and Casa Feliz and Lotus with shared bathroom.
Upon completion of this yoga teacher training, students will receive certificate affiliated with Yoga Alliance. Registration with Yoga Alliance provides a globally recognized credential. The course schedule runs from Monday to Saturday, Sunday is off.
Notes: This schedule is given as a guide to help you to envisage your time with Doron Yoga. In practice, it will vary according to the focus of the week to accommodate specific teachings and to adapt to the best interests of the course. Your Sundays are free.
The Doron Yoga & Zen Center (DYZC) is located in Tzununa, which is surrounded by hills on Lake Atitlan with great views of the volcanoes on the other side of the lake. Located a short walk from Lake Atitlan in the small Mayan village of Tzununa, Guatemala, the Doron Yoga & Zen Center’s grounds naturally grow coffee, banana, avocado, and other trees. Near to the small Tzununa River, the river of hummingbirds and water, that flows through the property are herb and vegetable gardens, a large chicken coop, plenty of grounds for the dog and cats to play, and a fire pit to enjoy on chilly evenings.
Two buffet-style meals will be served each day. They will be a mix of international, Guatemalan, and Doron’s special healthy, yummy, and Mediterranean touch made from fresh local produce and organic when available. Each meal is substantial, varied, and nourishing to energize you through your practices without leaving you feeling too heavy.
All food at the Doron Yoga & Zen Center is prepared as healthily and nutritiously as possible under the guidance of the DYZC's founder and director, who is also a trained chef and certified nutrition consultant.
To the greatest extent possible, the food is organic and locally sourced, including from the DYZC's own blossoming gardens. Please let the DYZC know if you have any food allergies or special dietary restrictions. If possible, carry any food that may be specific to your requirement.
If you are interested in a massage, Doron Yoga can arrange for a masseuse to come to the DYZC. Tibetan singing bowl chakra and physical balancing treatments and massages are also available at the DYZC. All treatment costs will be at your expense.
San Marcos is the closest town over and can also be reached by foot along a dirt road. There, you can relax in one of the many cafes and restaurants or partake in an array of healing offerings, including shamanism, cacao ceremonies, Reiki, massage, and much more. Among others, San Pedro, a short ride to the other side of the lake, has more of a vibrant backpacker’s vibe and is a little less expensive.
Please book your flight to arrive at La Aurora International Airport (GUA). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request.
Be sure to arrive at La Aurora International Airport (GUA) before noon on the first day of the course. Doron Yoga can then arrange an optional (additional fee) group shuttle to leave the airport at noon. The shuttle arrives at Panajachel followed by a boat ride to Tzununa. Once in Tzununa, locals know DYZC as Casa Doron Yoga, so you can take a tuk-tuk from the dock for five minutes and costing 5 GTQ (less than 1 USD).
