Enriching Yoga Teacher Training Mexico

Davannayoga training focuses on teaching the Vinyasa style to all levels of yoga practitioners. The purpose is to uphold and maintain the highest standard of safety and instruction for all yoga teachers. You will learn how to teach asana, pranayama, mantra, mudra, and meditation, as well as Davannayoga’s signature assists and adjusts to help the student relax and take their practice deeper.

Due to varying personal preferences and budgets as Davannayoga runs a non-residential teacher training programs, there are many housing options within a five-minute walk of Davannayoga. Once you have registered, Davannayoga can help you to connect with others in the course who would like to share housing if you are looking to share.

Casa Dulce Vida

It is a collection of seven separate suites each with a well-equipped kitchen and private entrance. Most have private patios with views of the town and bay. Some overlook the pool and tropical gardens. Ideal for groups, families, or the solo traveler.

Casa 2

Popular casa two opens directly onto the pool and gardens. Approximately 1120 square feet with one bedroom with one king and single bed, one bath, a dressing room, a spacious sunny living area with extra sleeping which consists two single beds and a large, well-equipped kitchen.

Casa 3

This private casa with a huge sunny terrace is the perfect hideaway. The large bedroom which has a king bed and bath connect via the patio with the kitchen, living area, and second bath. This allows privacy for extra sleeping in the living area which consists of one single, or one king, and one single. The 950 indoor and 575 outdoor square feet include a fully equipped kitchen and large private terrace. This casa may be rented as a studio with a private patio, without the master suite.

Casa 6

This two level approximately 500 square feet casa is perfect for a couple.The lower level of Casa 6 is the bedroom with one queen bed and bath. A small spiral staircase leads you up to the combination kitchen and living area which has two single daybeds. This opens onto the rooftop patio with breathtaking views of the town and bay.

Casa 7

Step off the street into charming Casa 7 with one bedroom (one double bed), one bath, fully equipped kitchen, and extra sleeping in the living area (one queen sized bed). This approximately 440 square feet casa does not have a patio but the pool and gardens are up one level via a small circular staircase.

Casa De Amigos PV

Casa De Amigos PV is a large villa style home and within the home, there are three full-size apartments, one studio apartment, and a single bedroom unit, all on the same property. Each unit is very private with its own entrance. All have ocean views and are connected by the common areas of the villa.

The bedroom

With its own private entrance, the bedroom may be utilized independently for those that need only bed and bath accommodations. The bedroom, with its unique style and design, offers a cozy yet spacious place to stay. It has an ocean view, queen size bed, a balcony, bar fridge, and a Nescafé coffee maker for you coffee lovers.

It is one level down from the common level, allowing you to easily access and utilize the pool, lounge area, and even the extra kitchen. The bedroom is a perfect second room to any of the home's apartments or an excellent alternative to the common hotel room.

Teaching certification is awarded on the basis of successful comprehension and mastery of the principles and practices of yoga and the ability to communicate them to others. Those diligently applying themselves should find no difficulty in achieving success. It is necessary to come with the passion to immerse yourself in an intensive yoga training program.

It requires a commitment to be present daily and participate to the best of your ability. This may require changing your sleeping habits to retire early and wake up early in order to be prepared for early morning classes. There is a lot of reading and practicing between daily classes. Please do not plan other activities during this training such as Spanish lessons or other training as your full attention should be given to this program in order to complete it successfully.

Please also note that this is an intensive training where you will deepen your practice. You must have three to six days of practice per week working up to this training. You will practice together with the rest for six to seven days per week once you are here. You should not come with pre-existing injuries that will inhibit you from getting the most out of your practice.

Pre-requisites for certification

  • Attend all training hours and complete all essay assignments and apprenticeship hours
  • Complete teacher training application and pay all fees.
  • Create or give a Davannayoga Vinyasa sequenced class to your peers for peer critique. Some of these classes will be given in teams.
  • Sign Davannayoga Teachers Ethical Guidelines or Code of Conduct and the waiver given at meet and greet prior to the first training day.

Criteria for receiving Davannayoga teacher certification

  • Student must agree to the Davannayoga teacher guidelines and ethics.
  • You must hand in all required book reports and homework assignments.
  • You must have a 100% attendance record at all trainings.
  • You must successfully as evaluated by director lead a class to your peers that you will create throughout the program.

Yoga teacher training curriculum

  • The curriculum follows the guidelines recognized by the Yoga Alliance for a 200-hour program.

Module 1 - Teaching technique: The art of teaching (100 hours)

  • Teaches both the theory and practice of asanas, meditation, pranayama, sequencing, mudras, bandhas, and Sanskrit. Yoga asanas are studied in-depth.
  • Principles of classic yoga asanas
  • Alignment theory
  • Posture-specific alignment and benefits
  • Adapting postures to the individual, special cases such as children, pre-natal, and special needs
  • Usage of props
  • Vinyasa Flow practice technique
  • Krishnamacharya’s Theory of Krama and sequencing

  • Mudras and their effects
  • Thai yoga massage basics
  • Bandhas and their effects on asana and pranayama

Module 2 - Teaching methodology (25 hours)

Teaches the demonstration and observation of poses; how to assist, adjust, and modify the poses, understanding students' learning styles, developing one's teaching style, and the business of yoga.

  • Teaches both physical anatomy, physiology, and energy anatomy for example chakras and nadis as they apply to yoga teaching
  • Introductory anatomy as applied to asana, useful vocabulary for anatomy
  • Anatomy of postures such as seated postures, twists, backbends, and inversions
  • The physiology of asana, breath, and meditation
  • Injury prevention
  • Advanced relaxation techniques

Module 4 - Yoga philosophy, lifestyle, and ethics (30 hours)

  • Teaches the history of yoga; different styles of yoga, yoga philosophy, and the ethical behavior of yoga teachers.
  • History of yoga both classical and modern. Evolution of yoga, its importance to teachers and their contributions
  • Fundamentals of the yoga sutras and eight-limbed path
  • Major modern schools and their approaches
  • The yoga of the Vedas and Upanishads
  • The Bhagavad-Gita and its teachings
  • Patanjali’s classical yoga
  • Tantra yoga
  • The history, theory, and technology of Hatha yoga

Module 5 - Teaching apprenticeship (20 hours)

In-class teaching, assisting, receiving feedback, observing, and giving feedback to other teachers. Apprentice teaching under the evaluating eye of the instructor. This may be in giving a full class or parts of a class. You will give one class that you create as a final exam. This class will be given to and evaluated by your peers.

Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries by Susi Hately Aldous. Books for essays are worth 55 non-contact hours of your training. The essays on these books can be handed in before coming to the training or before graduation.

Required reading

  • The Heart of Yoga by TKV Desikachar either in English or Spanish. 20 hours to read entire book and five hours for essay which accumulates to 25 hours.
  • Yoga and Vegetarianism by Sharon Gannon. 10 hours to read entire book and five hours for essay which accumulates to 15 hours.
  • The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, translation by Chip Hartranft. Shambala Classics or you can use the Yoga Sutra. Translations in the back of The Heart of Yoga book. 10 hours to read entire book and five hours for essay which accumulates to 15 hours.

Essay format

  • 500 to 800 words in English or Spanish

Daily schedule

Morning

At 6:30 or 7:15 a.m., you will practice opening mantras, pranayama practice, questions from homework, and walking meditations. When the course is shorter and weather is warmer mainly in July, the class will begin earlier at 6:30 a.m.

You will also have asana practice and teaching asanas, adjusting, anatomy work, or co-create and practice giving a class with your peers. Mornings may contain one to two practices in the form of classes that you give or classes that the course leader gives.

Lunch break

Lunch break time will depend on length of day.

Afternoon

Practical training in day’s coursework, anatomy, history, philosophy, teaching methodology, sequencing Restorative yoga class, working with special groups, props workshops, and more ending with closing mantra.

Afternoon

You will be free from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Most evenings around three to four nights per week, you will be together with the rest of the students from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be more asana practice, pranayama practice, meditation practice, or kirtan depending on your coursework progress.

Friday evenings

There is a kirtan mantra meditation class that you will partake in.

Saturday

You will get out a bit early giving you time to rest, study, or work on the final sequence that you will lead the other student teachers in. There is time for swimming in the ocean, sunning, and rejuvenating.

Sunday

Some Sundays or all Sundays are included, depending on length of course.

This training will take place in Davannayoga, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

During this training, meals will not be provided. On Saturdays, only during the high season and not in May, July or October trainings, in Old Town, there is a farmers market with many healthy options for food, shampoos, soaps, and gifts. In addition, Organic Select will deliver your order to the yoga studio on Thursdays, but you have to have your order to Anna by Mondays at 12 p.m.

There are more and more organic stores popping up daily. There is also Costco and Sam’s Club that offer many organic options, so if you have cards for those stores, they are honored here. Just a few steps away is a mom and pop style restaurant with only four tables that will give you juice or coconut water daily. They also very economical meals and snacks. They are flexible and can make almost whatever you want.

Only two blocks away is a Davannayoga favorite, which is Vegetarian Planet Restaurant, with a daily buffet of vegan and vegetarian delights. There are tienditas, also known as “little stores”, one block away with fresh fruit, nuts, bread, beans, veggies, and fresh tortillas daily. They have many more things as well. Ever so often, students who live nearby do not need to go to a big market as they can find what they need at the tiendita.

There are numerous juice stands, fruit stands, and sandwich shops very nearby, as well as a Starbucks only five minutes away by foot if you need a coffee or tea and some nice air-conditioning. Basically, Davannayoga is in the center of it all. You will be able to find what you need very nearby.
