A temazcal is a type of sweat lodge, which originated from pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures in Mesoamerica. The word temazcal comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word temazcalli (house of heat). In ancient Mesoamerica, it was used as part of a curative ceremony thought to purify the body, mind, and spirit. The shape of the temazcal represents the womb of Mother Earth.
In the Nahuatl tradition, one of its purposes is the confrontation with Tezcatlipoca, the dark side of your spirit, in order to be reborn more liberated than when you went in. The temazcal ceremony consists of four puertas (doors) which represent physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. To produce the heat, volcanic stones are heated and then placed in a pit located in the center of the temazcal.
The guide pours an infusion with aromatic and medicinal herbs that produce steam upon contact with the stones. Today, this pre-Hispanic tradition continues to be used in indigenous cultures and is being recovered by the society for spiritual and health purposes.
At Mar de Jade, you will be offered the temazcal ceremony as a means of sharing a therapeutic, cultural, and spiritual experience. A minimum of six and maximum of 14 people is required for one session. A session will take about two hours, and will cost 30 USD per person.
You will have access to the Mar de Jade swimming pool, hot tub, cold tub, and steam room.
Please book your flight to arrive at Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request. It will cost you approximately 20 to 100 USD, depending on the number of passengers.
Taking the local bus takes about an hour or two longer than a direct taxi, because it stops at many towns along the way, and you must take two taxis to and from the bus stations. Buses leave about every half an hour from the Puerto Vallarta bus terminal (Central Camionera) to Las Varas, which is the closest town to the venue, available until 10:00 p.m.
From the airport, take a taxi to the bus station Central Camionera which is about one mile north of the airport at a cost of 10 USD from one to four people. Buy a ticket at the Pacifico bus line, for a northbound bus to Las Varas, costing about 10 to 15 USD per person. The ride is about two hours. At the Las Varas bus station, ask for a taxi to Mar de Jade in Chacala. It should take 15 minutes and cost about 10 USD.
You can buy a ticket for an official airport taxi inside of the airport building. It generally is more expensive than the cost of the taxis Dailey Reflexology and Yoga can arrange for you. Make sure they know where Chacala, Nayarit is because there is more than one town with this name in the area.
You can also take a regular yellow city taxi, with whom you can bargain for a better price, by crossing the highway over the pedestrian bridge in front of the airport. There are usually regular P.V. yellow taxis drivers parked in front of the restaurants and shops there, and they charge 80 to 150 USD. Again, make sure they take you to the correct Chacala, in the state of Nayarit.
