There is no place in the world more flavorful than the southern Caribbean area of Costa Rica. Puerto Viejo is a laid back village that moves to a reggae beat. Shirts and shoes are optional at many restaurants.
Their beaches are never crowded and offer lots of activities including surfing, snorkeling, biking, hiking, gourmet restaurants, wildlife, and friendly people, all of which will make this your favorite vacation spot (people often return once they have visited Puerto Viejo).
Puerto Viejo is a fun, inexpensive place to spend a weekend, week, or month! You can rent a bicycle and see it all. You can also take a bus or hire a guide for great day trips.
The Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is a hurricane free zone! They sit nine degrees north of the equator, below the northern reaches of Columbia and Venezuela, where hurricanes cannot go. When Atlantic hurricanes spiral, the sun shines here.
A mouth-watering vegetarian breakfast and lunch are served daily. Dinner is also included in the price. Gluten-free and vegan options are available by special request. As much of the food as possible, all meals will be sourced from on-site organic gardens and locally from the community. This is truly a labor of love that can be seen and tasted with each serving!
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca offers many conveniences as an up-and-coming beach town that was once very off the beaten path. Explore 14 kilometers of gorgeous and pristine Caribbean beaches, hike waterfalls, horseback ride, surf or spot the local wildlife on your days off. This place is a nature lovers dream! The retreat center is located close enough to town to walk to all conveniences, yet tucked away in a quiet jungle corner to support a deep and sacred study.

Just a short bus trip from Cashew Hill you can hike the nature trail and see monkeys (howler, white-faced), sloths, anteaters, turtles, birds, multiple other forest creatures, ferns, bromeliads, huge jungle trees, and the largest living coral reef in Costa Rica. After or during your hike, you can swim at beautiful deserted beaches.
There are many snorkeling reefs around Puerto Viejo. Some can be reached by bicycle (Punta Uva and Manzanillo). Others by bus (Cahuita). Punta Uva and Salsa Brava are their favorite snorkeling locations. Diving courses and trips are available through multiple dive shops, for all levels. Snorkel gear is available to rent in town.
The best surfing on the Caribbean Coast is at the famous ‘Salsa Brava.’ This famous surf spot is within walking distance from Cashew Hill but is for experienced surfers only. There are many other surfing beaches, such as “Beach Break” at Playa Cocles, within the Puerto Viejo area. Lessons are available for all ages. The waves are generally best from December through March, with a mini-season for surfing in June and July.
There is a spa available on site for additional bodywork and energy work treatment which you can make use during your free time.
