You will stay in a beautiful Portuguese quinta (country house) in double or single rooms. You will be able to choose your preferred room type from five double or twin rooms with shared bathrooms, two single rooms with shared bathrooms or three rooms with ensuite bathrooms for up to three guests.
The property consists of a main house, several additional buildings, terraces, an indoor and outdoor yoga studio, a swimming pool, a small river, fruit trees, a meditation garden, and rural land. The gardens surrounding the main house have around 5000 square meters and offer enough space to relax.
Portugal and in particular the coast around Peniche and Baleal offer some of the best conditions for surfing, regardless if you are a beginner or want to improve your surfing. Buddha Retreats believes that students learn best when they are in small groups where instructors can spend enough time with each student to address individual needs and skill levels.
The surf lessons are suited for all type of levels from beginners, intermediate to advanced surfers. The instructors will take their time to explain theory and practice basic skills on the beach. They will provide you with all the equipment needed and a wetsuit that will keep you warm while surfing. Surfing conditions are good all year round with bigger waves during autumn and winter and smaller waves in spring and summer.
During the retreats, the instructors teach Iyengar yoga which is a dynamic and physically intensive form of yoga where the focus is on correct alignment of the asanas (postures). This practice allows the energy to flow freely through the body. The practice of yoga will give strength and flexibility to the body and more peace in your mind.
The yoga practice focuses on core-strength and balance, which have great benefits for surfing. The yoga sessions are designed to build core strength and to increase balance, flexibility and energy levels.
Each class is a challenge and you will work your body. Sun salutations (surya namaskar) are a great way to strengthen the arms and the chest before surfing; and forward bending and twisting are a great way to release the body after a long day of surfing. Each session ends with at least five minutes of relaxation (savasana). Surfers and non-surfers of all levels can benefit from the classes. The yoga classes are suitable for all levels of experience.
The property is located on a spacious plot at the edge of the small Portuguese town of Columbeira. Some great surf spots can be found within only a 15 to 20-minute drive from the property. Supertubos and the beaches of Peniche and Baleal are just around the corner. There are several hiking trails in close vicinity.
This area of the coast is easy to reach from Lisbon by public transport and car (about 40 minutes). Several budget airlines fly from different parts from Europe to Lisbon, which makes this long weekend yoga retreats a perfect getaway.

Food is taken very seriously at Buddha Retreats. As part of all their yoga and surf retreats, they will provide you with daily delicious and healthy meals. They serve an abundance of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, often coming from their own garden or the local markets. The menu is based on the philosophy of whole foods, so they avoid processed foods and preservatives.
In the morning, you will be served a healthy and energizing breakfast which includes fresh fruit, homemade granola, freshly baked bread, and banana bread among other things. Depending on your yoga and surf schedule, you will enjoy a delicious lunch either at the Buddha Retreats house or you will be given a packed lunch that you can enjoy at the beach.
After an active day, you will be served a dinner on the terrace while enjoying the sunset or indoors in front of the crackling fireplace. During the warmer periods, Buddha Retreats staff will try to arrange a seafood barbecue with fresh caught seafood once per week. The other meals will be vegetarian. As part of the retreats, you can enjoy fresh coffee, herbal teas, and purified water as much as you wish. During dinner time, you will be served Portuguese red and white wines.
Please book your flight to arrive at Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). The closest airport to Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf is Lisbon Portela Airport which is 75 kilometers away. The Portuguese national airline TAP has flights from all major European cities to Lisbon and there are numerous budget airlines with flights.
If you visit during peak season (July to August), it is advisable to book your flights early as prices tend to be fairly high in those months. If you fly from any of the following places it is recommended to check the websites of these airlines for available flights.
From Amsterdam you may choose between Easyjet and Transavia. From London, Liverpool, and Edinburgh, you may try Easyjet. From Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Leipzig, Hamburg, Hannover, and Kln-Bonn, there is Germanwings.
Once you arrived at Lisbon airport and picked up your luggage you need to take a taxi to the Campo Grande bus terminal which is only two and a half kilometers away from the airport. There is a taxi stand just outside of the arrival area.
From the Campo Grande terminal, buses leave frequently to Bombarral (around 45 minutes) where you get picked up. You can download the bus timetable of the Rapida Verde bus from Lisbon to Bombarral from the website of Rodotejo. Please inform Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf of your time of arrival to arrange for pick up.
You can take a taxi from Lisbon Portela Airport to the retreat which will cost about 80 to 90 EUR each way.
