Silent Meditation Retreat Austria

Vipassana is often translated as insight. The Vipassana meditation technique in the courses is passed on in the same way as it is traditionally practised in the temples in Northern Thailand under the guidance of the venerable Ajahn Tong. It is an intensive form of the Mahasi Sayadaw tradition with walking and sitting meditations. So come enjoy this retreat and find yourself leaving relaxed and reinvigorated!

You have no one else to look after, you do not have to think about or plan anything while you are on this retreat. Take this opportunity to be away from the demands of your busy and complicated lifestyle. Delve deeper into your meditation practice and leave feeling not only totally rested and peaceful but also inspired to make meditation a part of your daily life.

Part of the retreat is a daily reporting time that the teacher holds with each student individually to help them in the process. A confessional binding to Buddhism is neither presumed nor expected.

During the course participants are asked to adhere to the eight Buddhists precepts:

  • To abstain from killing any living creature.
  • To abstain from taking what has not been given.
  • To abstain from any sexual activity.
  • To abstain from bad speech such as telling lies, gossiping, or bad language.
  • To abstain from taking intoxicants (drugs or alcohol).
  • To abstain from eating solid foods after 12 midday.
  • To abstain from sensual entertainment (dancing, singing, listening to music, entertainments, using perfumes, jewellery, etc).
  • To abstain from sleeping in high and luxurious beds.

The courses are conducted in noble silence.

  • Martin Pack

Martin has been meditating for more than 30 years. 14 years ago, he came across this particular form of Vipassana meditation and it was a life-changing experience. He subsequently spent years practicing in Northern Thailand often going straight from one retreat into another. Soon, he was asked to assist in leading retreats by revered teacher Thanat in Chom Thong in Thailand and Phra Ofer in Israel under the authority of the venerable Ajarn Tong Sirimangalo coming from the Mahasi lineage.

Located on the Fernpass, a main pass through the Alps, the Alpen Retreat is situated on the Via Claudia Augusta, a historic Roman road utilized by countless travelers including Napoleon during his march into Italy. At 1200 meters in altitude, this 500 year old former manor house blends seamlessly into a mountain panorama of pine forests, jagged peaks, and crystal clear Alpine lakes.

Alpine Retreat on the Tirolean Fernpass is a 45-minute drive from the German border, 1 hour and 30 minutes from Italy, and 1 hour from Switzerland. It is also an hour's drive from Memmingen and Innsbruck Airports and 2 hours from Munich Airport. Bus connections from the surrounding cities lead directly to their doorstep. There are five train stations within a 30-minute drive, which are Garmisch Patenkirchen, Fuessen and Imst or Pitztal, Lermoos, and Ehrwald.

"Alpen Retreat is the place where I felt the most comfortable ever. It is not a hotel, it is a home. As soon as you arrived, you feel welcomed and at ease. Every room is beautiful, clean, and cosy. There are even a small library and a warm living room with huge snug couches. The attic is a big special place where you can practice yoga, meditation, or participate in a workshop. The landscape as well is breathtaking. Of course Alpen Retreat has some rules, but they really are common sense to insure that everybody has a good time. For instance, no shoes in the house as the first rule. But you can choose from many different nice slippers to cover your feet. Every thing was thought to make you feel good. The food is delicious and there are fruits and a huge selection of teas and coffees on self service all day long. You can drink it from your mug that you can pick from many different mugs and take it with you from room to room and reuse it as many times as you want like you do at home. Every helper and owner are really here to make sure your needs are heard and answered, so you will spend a great time in this very special place. I am really grateful for my stay there, thank you!"

"The Alpen Retreat was a nice place with friendly and helpful staff, and we enjoyed our stay there. A fine tuning of a few things would mean that I would consider coming back instead of just renting a flat in a skiing resort and doing my own yoga. First of all, the house was a little bit too cold most of the time. But they were in the process of buying a new heating system, so that is probably fixed by next winter. The food could be more interesting. If you are in the market for Scandinavian guests who will have higher expectations about the food, it has to be clear on the English website that it is vegetarian. Finally, since it is a combined yoga and snow sports retreat, the yoga program should take the snow sports activities of the participants into account from the beginning. Overall, the yoga program improved a lot after we voiced our wishes clearly. It would have been more comfortable and useful had the instructors enquired about our expectations, interests, and levels to begin with. I would recommend the Alpen Retreat to young yogis who are fascinated by the philosophy and want to be inspired. And to those, who are just looking for a cheap and friendly place to live for a few days."

We booked for 4 Nights and enjoyed our great time with the lovely located rooms in the middle of beautiful mountains and forest. The view was fantastic when you wake up in the morning and look outside of your room. The food was great and organic and cooked fresh every day. Many thanks to Beatrice, Wolfgang, Jan and all the others. We will definitely come back in Summer or Winter. In Winter time the beautiful surrounding invites you for great skiing experience. "Very well located on the way between Bavaria and Tyrol, close to the road for easy access but very calm, surrounded by amazing nature (mountains, river, forest, lake). Beautiful guest house, 500 years old, well renovated. Tasty home-cooked vegetarian food and herbal tea from the garden. Generous breakfast. Friendly and welcoming host community. Atmosphere influenced by yoga and well-being. House serving both for yoga retreats and bnb."

"The Alpine Retreat is a wonderful place to get away and reconnect with nature, friends, or just yourself. Marie, our hostess, was wonderfully friendly, welcoming, and offered lots of suggestions for things we could do in the area. We went showshoeing, tobogganing, and hiking. If you are able to share a dinner from the kitchen - do it! The vegetarian food is awesome -- perfect healthy and hearty food to wrap up a day of outdoor activity. The rooms are tidy and decorated with a surprisingly fluid mix of old Tirol and Eastern styles. The faint aroma of incense freshens the hallways, and a large open yoga and meditation room (which was always open for use!) encourages utter relaxation. The retreat is kind of out of the way, but that's really what makes it so great-- amazing views of the mountains and hiking opportunities right outside. Stay here. You won't be disappointed."

"I just stayed at AlpenRetreat for a long weekend and was surprised with such a relaxing and inspiring time, that it felt like an entire holiday – far away from everyday life. Everyone was authentically warm and comforting. People from the retreat, not only shared their truly lovely place, but also stories from their lives. Everything far far succeeded my expectations. A spontaneous snow board lesson in puffy powdery snow, an intro to meditation, the opportunity to practice yoga, cuddling up to the old fashioned tile oven (Kachelofen), meaningful conversations over food prepared with love and creativity... what more can you possibly wish for? Thank you so much! I will find some time to return, for sure."

"A perfectly tranquil, scenic, and warm-hearted retreat space in the Austrian Himalayas. What touched our hearts the most is the intention of this amazing space. The founders, who are all good friends now, make the happiness of guests and everyone a priority in every aspect. This intention makes the center run harmoniously and beneficially for all who have the opportunity to come. Even the little critters in their compost are treated with respect and good wishes, therefore they are delighted in helping to nourish the tomatoes, salad greens, and other deliciously organic food in the center's garden. The founders Beatrice, Wolfgang, Jan, and Fraser are inspiring to no end, and we have seen them happily help many visitors individually to be well informed and meaningfully-entertained whether it be only at Alpen Retreat in Tyrol, and even around Europe in general. If you're coming for a yoga or meditation retreat, you will certainly enjoy and benefit from the peaceful, quiet, and spiritual atmosphere that so many have helped to create. The upstairs yoga and meditation hall radiate personal transformation into love and wisdom. You'll be delighted in waking up every morning to invigorating incense and the opportunity to explore the true meaning and depths of your precious human life."

Danke Glen and danke an das unschlagbare Alpenretreat Team. "
