Accommodation

El Convento Yoga Retreats Spain provides all accommodation with sheets, pillows, and duvets plus covers. For larger families, an extra tent can be provided at no extra cost. The accommodation is simple but beautiful with our bohemian bell-tents, tipis, and huts. They don't believe that having a plasma television and private balcony will make your holiday more restful. Instead, we give you the mountains, the gardens, the terraces and the rivers to wander through, meditate on, socialize in or simply sit next to.

They aren't damaging their environment by building ill-fitting dormitories or wasting vast amounts of water on poorly sourced plants. Instead, they use the clean mountain water, piped directly from the spring, power ourselves on solar energy only and encourage energy efficiency with both indoor and outdoor showers as well as contemporary and compost toilets.

Adobe hut

Round in shape, made from adobe bricks of clay and straw. Beautiful wooden spiral roof. Complete with mattress beds and chest of drawers.

Bell tents

Spacious tents made of canvas, four to five meters in diameter. Floor covering, mattress and base, bedside table, and clothes hanger.

New wooden hut

Very large hut with clay-tiled floors, cupboard, and electricity.

Straw bail hut

Cool and large with three panoramic windows. This hut comes with a sink for washing, electricity, and a chest of drawers on traditional clay-tiled floors.

Tipi

Tipi is made of canvas, five meters in diameter. All with floor covering, mattress and bases, clothes rail, and bedside table.

Wooden huts

El Convento Yoga Retreats Spain Program

DAILY ROUTINE AT FAMILY YOGA RETREATS

The routine is simple; eating, free time, yoga and activities. Spend time with your family sleeping in a TP yurt or wooden cabana. Wake to a leisurely breakfast followed by time to be, then yoga and activities. Families are welcome to eat light before the morning yoga and eat the buffet breakfast after the practice. El Convento Yoga Retreats Spain has a late lunch in the shade, at the hottest time of the day.

Late afternoon, ideas and activities begin. Walks to the bolsa for a refreshing dip or winding through the mountain forest to a ruined monks hermitage with spectacular views. The walks are numerous and are for all ages from gentle to challenging. Evening meal at sunset is slow and informal. Seating is varied; large or small family tables, or cushions on matting. The cool mountain air is welcome providing new motivations or a chance to chill. Time passes effortlessly at El Convento Family Yoga Retreats and Holidays.

ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AT OUR YOGA RETREATS

The children will have opportunities to play together and learn, to be artistic both visually and in performance. Often the children make a play or performance at the end of the week. The activities also include painting, making with clay, baking bread, circus skills, organized games, swimming, music, adventure walks, as well as some fun yoga.

Important information

Every year we run Family Yoga Retreats which are designed especially for children and their parents. Children have their own special activity sessions as well as being cared for, while parents are on their daily course. Children under 3 years are very welcome but will require additional childcare - please remember to inform Nic when you make a booking so that can be arranged.

Included excursions

Outings

The Family Yoga Retreat hopes to give time and space for a family to "be" together without the noise stress and distraction of computers, TV, mobile phone, clocks, cars and commuting. Balance is important and we offer 2 outings in the week. A trip to the famous town of Ronda 1 hour away and a picnic by the spring-fed river in the nature park followed by tapas in the local traditional white village.

Instructors

Nic Freeman
Nic’s passion for the outdoors and self styled lifestyle maintains El Convento Retreat with a wonderfully varied selection of activities from parent and partner, caretaker, yoga teacher, walking guide, gardener, mechanic, water manager, eco advocate and fixer, to all things Andalucian.

Retreat location

El Convento Yoga Retreat and Holiday Centre lies nine kilometers into the nature reserve Sierra de las Nieves in Andalusia. San Juan Hermitage is the home to El Convento Retreat, which is perfect for views of sunrise and sunset at either end of the terrace. San Juan is set within olive and almond trees on flat ground and is overlooked by the former monastery in the north.

The atmospheric crumbling ruins contain the protected intact church and homes to the visiting Vera family. Occasionally at night, lights shine in the ruins providing welcome signs of life. Below the hermitage is a gorge, then the mountain rises again, giving endless views of nature in harmony.

Food

You will have time to enjoy eating healthy and delicious food, all freshly prepared organic or locally sourced. Meals are children friendly. Homemade bread, cakes, and desserts that are still yummy but naturally sweetened. The week gives everyone the chance to eat less sugar and processed food.

The retreat environment is relaxed. Personal choice is maintained but we encourage everyone to take the opportunity to quit smoking and alcohol and reduce sugar coffee and tea for a week (or hopefully longer). Smoking is not possible in the accommodation or communal areas. A glass of wine can be pleasant and should not be a problem.

How to get there

Driving directions from Malaga

  • To get to El Convento, there's a rather long white road. It's not made for cars with low spoilers so they recommend hiring either a 4 x 4 or a tough car that can take some bumps and jumps.
  • If you are driving from Malaga, around 2.5 kilometers before you reach El Burgo, the traditional white town, there is a sign-post and turning on the left for Sierra de las Nieves natural park.
  • Turn down this road and continue for around nine kilometers.
  • When you reach the cross roads with the stone cross in the middle, continue straight over.
  • You will reach a designated camping area with a gate at the end labelled 'Private'.
  • They will have informed you where the key is kept upon booking so simply open the gate and continue on and please remember to lock the gate after you.
  • You're now in the Convent grounds so simply drive down the hill, following the sign-posts for El Convento.
  • If you look to the right, you should see the retreat.

Driving directions from Ronda

  • If you are driving from Ronda, stay on the Ronda to Malaga road through El Burgo until you see the Sierra de las Nieves sign and a turning on the right. Then continue as above.
  • Please inform El Convento Yoga Retreats Spain if coming by car to ensure access gates are open into El Convento.
