During this holiday, you will be accommodated in Zen Buddhist & Yoga Retreat, a panoramic and secluded retreat center overlooking the Conondale Valley and the mountains beyond. The temperate climate there allows beautiful gardens to flourish, bringing in prolific birdlife and fauna.

Kintamani Room

The Kintamani Room has a Balinese hand-carved queen bed and its own bathroom. It is for a maximum of two people, and couples will be given preference.

Uluwatu Room

The Uluwatu room has a single bunk on top and a double bed on the bottom. It is for a maximum of three people. Two single guests may share the bunk room. The Ubud and Uluwatu rooms share a large bathroom with twin vanities and a separate toilet.

This retreat is designed to promote clarity and well-being in body, mind, and spirit. It will help you achieve a feeling of peace of mind, with focus on finding a state of stillness and silence within.

The program is based on ancient yogic Veda practices, Zen Buddhist teachings, and mindfulness meditation. It commences at 4:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. CPD certificates can be requested and issued for persons working in the mental health industry.

Zen Buddhist and Yoga Retreat is a serious yoga, meditation, and Zen knowledge program for students, from beginners to intermediate levels. Guests can join in with as little or as many sessions as they require to find the peace and relaxation that they are searching for.

The yoga portion of the program will aid with the improvement of the physical health of the body and strengthen the spirit so that you become aware of the interaction between body, mind, and self.

The Zen portion of the program will give clarity to the mind and knowledge. Understanding will result in wisdom and will further strengthen the spirit.

In turn, you will learn to be mindful before speaking or acting. Zen knowledge will teach you patience and tolerance and offer a feeling of peace and silence within.

The Zen Buddhist program outline

The goal of the Zen portion of the program is to give the participant the information that regular practice will bring them to a state of peace of mind and happiness. The information will be transmitted slowly, little by little, building it up each day.

There will be time for you to contemplate that knowledge so that you have an understanding of it. Together, you will practice mindful Zen meditation techniques to bring the mind to a state of stillness, silence, and clarity.

When you place the knowledge and the understanding in the stillness and silence of a clear mind, the outcome is wisdom on the subject you are contemplating.

From wisdom comes peace of mind, from peace of mind comes contentment with life, and from contentment comes happiness.

The resident priest, Fushin, will determine what topics will be covered during your program, based on the participants' previous studies, and may not necessarily be in the order shown above.

Sample schedule

  • 07:30 One-hour Zen meditation class with Fushin or Rose
  • 08:30 Breakfast
  • 10:00 Yoga class followed by free time and lunch or exploring the Hinterland region
  • 14:30 Yoga practice (breaking down the asana) or advanced Zen discussion
  • 15:30 Yoga topic discussion (Monday to Wednesday) or Nidra yoga and guided meditation class (Thursday to Sunday)
  • 16:00 Yoga class (Hatha on Saturday and Sunday, Vinyasa from Monday to Wednesday, and mindfulness on Thursday and Friday)
  • 17:00 Zen meditation class with Fushin
  • 18:00 Dinner
  • 19:30 Zen armchair chat and questions and answers with Fushin

From Thursday at sunrise until Friday at 4:00 p.m., there is a silent retreat, allowing guests who have stayed a whole week to reflect on silence through guided instruction with Fushin and Rose, whilst still following the practices of yoga, meditation, and Zen.

  • Rosalie (Mawar) Allan

    Rose has been studying yoga, meditation, and massage therapy for over 30 years. She believes in keeping the practice gentle, yet challenging, using her knowledge of both the physical and psychological self.

  • Fushin Daijo Yin Chao

    ​Fushin began his practice of meditation in the late 1970s and the study of Buddhism in the late 1990s. Ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest, he brings to the program 40 years of knowledge and understanding.

This retreat will take place in Wootha, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, nearby Maleny and Montville. The Hinterland has many beautiful drives, walks, parks, and waterfalls. It is a very popular bed and breakfast location for the Brisbane market.

The famous Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo is nearby. The area is very beautiful, a lovely way to start any international holiday commencing in Brisbane. There is one acre of gardens where birds, wallabies, and koalas live.
