For this retreat, you will be staying in different guesthouses and hotels in and around Kathmandu. Every guesthouse you will stay in offers lovely surroundings, calming nature, and stunning sceneries and landscapes which will perfectly complement your yoga practice.

The Kathmandu Valley natives have practiced yoga and tantra for hundreds of years, integrating these practices into their daily lives. The valley itself is a mandala of sacred sites: monasteries, meditation caves, temples, and stupas. Several of these are on UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list and being present in these spaces is transformative and deeply moving.
If you feel called, then join Supersoul Yoga for what will be a deeply transformative journey. You will practice yoga in a Tibetan monastery and visit the medieval city of Patan. You will trek through otherworldly landscapes at the foot of the Himalayas and visit the holiest Buddhist and Hindu sites including Boudhanath and Pashupatinath Temple.
You will deepen your yoga practice with Ellen Johannesen who has over 20 years of experience in teaching and practicing Ashtanga yoga, has a master's degree in Buddhist studies and has become a local in Nepal.
You will join the daily morning self-practice Ashtanga yoga assisted by Ellen (level-two authorized KPJAYI teacher), for practitioners working on the primary, intermediate, and advanced series. Beginners will be individually assisted and lovingly introduced to Ashtanga yoga.
The afternoon classes will be inspired by the day trips and excursions, and include meditation, a restorative practice, talks on various philosophical and technical aspects of yoga, as well as pranayama (breathing). The philosophy lectures will introduce Buddhist teachings.
You will visit the holiest Hindu and Buddhist monasteries and temples in Kathmandu, including the Boudhanath stupa and the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, which is also home to local sadhus and Yogi Nath.
You will go on a retreat to the beautiful Neydo Tashi Chöling Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery perched on a hillside near the village Pharping. There will be visits to most sacred Buddhist sites, including the meditation cave (Asura Cave) of Guru Rinpoche, the temple and the spectacular shrine room, for an introduction to Buddhist thought. Afterward, you will depart to Patan.
You will visit Patan, one of three royal cities, which today make up Kathmandu, each one with its own city square, temples, and palaces. Visit the Golden Temple and Patan Museum, which stores some of the finest sculptures in the valley. Free time available for astrologist consultations, singing bowl workshops, massages, or relaxation at the colorful Patan Durbar Square.
There will be a retreat at The Famous Farm, Nuwakot: yoga, meditation, nature, and time for guided treks through lower Himalayas around the village of Nuwakot, which is a true gem of Newari culture and home to the golden-roofed Bhairab Temple, one of Nepal’s oldest.
You will have free time to explore the endlessly fascinating Kathmandu with plenty of sites to visit and shops and restaurants to indulge in. A visit to the Monkey Temple at Swayambunath is highly recommended!
During your visit to The Famous Farm, Nuwakot, there will be guided treks through lower Himalayas around the village of Nuwakot.
Ellen started practicing Ashtanga yoga in 1994 and holds a Level II Authorization from the KPJAYI Ashtanga Research Insitute in Mysore. She was one of the very first Ashtanga teachers in Norway and founded the Ashtanga Yoga Oslo in 2002. Currently, Ellen teaches at the Pranayama Yoga in Kathmandu and an advanced series practitioner and a dedicated student of John Scott with whom she completed a 2-year YTT. She's deeply interested in Buddhism and has lived for nearly 3 years in a Tibetan monastery in Bylakuppe, India. She also has a master's degree in Buddhist studies and translation.
This retreat will take you to several places in Nepal including Kathmandu, Neydo Tashi Chöling Monastery, Patan, and Nuwakot.
You will be served two meals a day. The food is Nepali and vegetarian.
During your free time, you can visit the Monkey Temple at Swayambhunath.
Please book your flight to arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). Transfer from the airport is included. Supersoul Yoga will pick you up from the airport.
