    You will be staying together in a lovely retreat center, set in lush exotic gardens with a big beautiful swimming pool. All around is beautiful, complete with ancient olive, orange, and fig trees laden with fruits ready to pick. Here, you can relax and recharge your whole being while you slip back into the natural rhythms of nature. Situated in the gardens are some cottages with their own terrace, looking out on ancient olive trees. The main house, with the kitchen, a big swimming pool, and the dining room, has several single and double rooms to choose from.

    You will be gently taken into a deepening practice of (partner) yoga postures, meditation, and pranayama. It does not matter if you are a beginner or advanced student; there is enough personal attention as the group is kept small. You will do quite a bit of partner yoga too, which is a great way of easing into the postures with the gentle support or weight of your partner.

    Often done in mirror-wise or complementing asanas, you will both enjoy a little stronger stretch with more ease. You can tune into each other’s rhythm of breath and take that minimal movement as a nourishing massage.

    Yoga

    Yoga is for everyone as it is not about getting picture-perfect postures but finding peace within yourself. When you do yoga regularly, it helps you to find a relaxed, open, and radiant presence in the center of your hectic life. The ultimate goal of yoga is "union" with the divine, which also means union with your body, emotions, heart, and soul.

    You are reuniting what has become separate, which includes your entire relationship with life and with each other. So, the real promise of yoga is not just to feel healthier in your body but to awaken your consciousness into the infinite. Some of the physical benefits of yoga are that it helps to eliminate toxins out of the body, release back pain, and has a positive effect on the hormonal balance, thus creating rejuvenation. The morning classes tend to be more active Hatha flow yoga and the afternoons are more relaxing Yin yoga style.

    Meditation

    With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. Meditation is one of the most powerful ways that can lead you back to inner peace. Just the simple act of following your breath and being a witness to your own thoughts and feelings will help you to become calmer and more focused. Meditation can also be called a state of “no-mind” or “beyond mind" - a state where you leave your concepts behind of what you think you are or should be and start being who you truly are and being more aware in each present moment.

    Pranayama

    Pranayama exercises are yogic breathing techniques that strengthen, purify, and calm the nervous system through cleansing the energy channels in the body, called nadis. When you re-remember how to breathe, you begin to slow down, trust, and relax. You are a reflection of your nervous system, so when you are calm, it benefits your general health on all levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Pranayama is a great tool to prepare for deep meditation and to reduce stress and anxiety as well as enhancing your life force energy.

    Partner yoga

    Partner yoga can be done with anybody. It expands the traditionally individual science of yoga into connecting with another person in a playful and sacred way. Sometimes, the asanas are done mirror-wise and other times in a complementary position, both people give and receive, and there is a constant physical contact in the postures. Doing the yoga practice together helps to experience the essence of yoga, which is "union".

    You can be very intimate with each other without any further expectations. The touch and support help you to hold poses for longer, thus deepening the impact of the pose. It is important, however, to communicate your limits and make adjustments when needed. At times, the weight of your partner will help you to bend deeper and with more pleasure than on your own.

    The rhythmic rise and fall, happening through breathing in and out can be experienced as a gentle massage. Feeling the warmth and support of your partner's body can also help you to relax and surrender more easily. Themes such as trust, compassion, and other universal principles are woven into the practice. In partner yoga, you can experience the silence together and connect on a deeper level, beyond your personalities, revealing your deeper nature. Partner yoga leaves you with a peaceful, balanced and nurtured feeling.

    The massage

    Most of the afternoon will be dedicated to the art and pleasure of massage, both in giving and receiving. Under the competent guidance of Tara and Inti, you will be introduced to different styles of massage. Among others is Thai massage, which is also aptly called Thai yoga massage, as it involves many stretches that resemble (partner) yoga postures. When done well, it gives the masseur / masseuse just as much of a stretch as the receiving partner.

    Daily itinerary of Shiva Shakti retreat

    Every day, you will have a partner yoga, a Chakra meditation, and Thai massage session with Tara and Inti. Breakfast and lunch are gourmet raw enhanced with superfoods, and dinner is more Ayurvedic style. Every day with Tara and Inti, you will have Chakra meditation at 09:00, breakfast at 10:00, partner yoga at 11:00-13:00, lunch at 13:30, then some free time to relax at the swimming pool or treat yourself to a message.

    Afterward, you will get a Thai massage at 17:00-19:00 and dinner at 19:30. Some days, you will have an evening program and you will have excursions to explore the beautiful Alpujarras region.

    Day 1

    On the arrival day, the program starts at 17:00 with a juice and a sharing circle. At 19:00, you will have your dinner.

    Day 2

    The focus of the day is on the first chakra and the element of earth. You will work on grounding yourself and your body.

    Day 3

    The focus of the day is the second chakra and the element of water. You will work on getting more into the flow of the practice. Also, you will go on an excursion to the waterfalls to enjoy and feel the water cleansing your body.

    Day 4

    The focus of the day is the third chakra and the element of fire. You will get more into an active and dynamic partner yoga practice. In the evening, you will have a fire ceremony where you can let go of what no longer serves you and invite your new creative ideas to manifest.

    Day 5

    The focus of the day is the fourth chakra and the element of air. You will add more pranayama breathing exercises to your practices. You will have a heart sharing circle this day.

    Day 6

    The focus of the day is the fifth chakra and the element of ether. You will focus on purification through speech, stillness, and listening exercises. You will have a mantra circle this evening.

    Day 7

    The focus of the day is the sixth chakra and the element light. You will focus on getting more in contact with your intuition and inner wisdom. You will have another mantra circle this evening!

    Day 8

    On the departure day, you will finish with a meditation for the crown chakra. After that, you will have breakfast at 09:30 and can star leaving the venue.

    This retreat includes an excursion to explore the beautiful Alpujarras region, especially to a waterfall to enjoy and feel the water cleansing your body.

    • Tara Esther Kleij

      Tara was born in Holland. In 1991, she became a certified rebirther in Haarlem and in 1995, she finished an intensive four-year massage training learning classical massage, rebalancing, and Shiatsu. She learned Thai-yoga massage in Thailand and Ayurvedic yoga massage in India. She likes to share the knowledge of this ancient practice and intermix it with a mantra and pranayama. She uses alignment principles and fun to bring in her own unique teaching style. She specializes in Hatha yoga, Flow yoga, Yin yoga, meditation and pranayama, and teach for over 25 years.

    • Inti

      Inti is a loving partner of Tara. Together, they are passionate about yoga and creating sacred space together and with others. They always take their time to do yoga and massage together and teach for many years in Spain, India, and Holland. Their approach to living a wonderful life together is making enough time for each other through yoga, mantra singing evenings and massage as well as being in nature. They embrace their vibrant life together and wish the same for everyone.

    The retreat venue is located about two kilometers out of the little village called Orgiva, situated in the Alpujarra region, province of Granda, Andalucia, Spain. Granada is nearby with its Arabic influences, invoking images of gypsies and medieval maze-like streets with the snow top mountain peaks from the Sierra Nevada in the background.

    Breakfast can be anything from almond milk with granola, banana pancakes, to crackers with avocado and cashew cheese with a smoothie prepared with superfoods. Dinner times are always a joy for the senses. There’s always something fascinating to taste, and if you can't eat or like certain things, there’s no need to worry because SunFoodYoga will be happy to accommodate any of your food preferences.

    All food is gluten, sugar, and lactose-free in this retreat - only delicious homemade raw food, using the freshest and organically grown ingredients. Exotic fruits, like mangoes, papayas, figs, etc. can be taken throughout the day. Your taste buds will be delighted by Indian tikka masala with onion badjis, mushroom stroganoff, Thai creamy curry with tempeh vegetables, and mouthwatering leek quiches just to name a few dishes you will try on the retreat.

    Driving directions from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP)

    • On leaving the airport, follow signs for Malaga and then signs for Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, Almeria, and Motril (A7).
    • After about 10 kilometers, the motorway splits into two motorways, it is important that you now keep to the left on the A7 in the direction of Almeria and Motril and that you don’t follow signs for Cordoba, Sevilla, and Granada.
    • You are on the Autovia del Meditaraneo driving east along the side of the sea.
    • The name changes to Autovia de Sierra Nevada and you are now driving north and inland.
    • Continue on this motorway until junction "175" (about 20 kilometers from the coast), and turn off in the direction of Orgiva and Las Alpujarras.
    • The slip road brings you downhill to the large dam and roundabout where you turn right towards Orgiva.
    • Keep going until you go through a tunnel, then turn left over the River Guadalfeo towards Orgiva.
    • When you enter Orgiva, you will see a supermarket called "Dia" on your right side, after that is the bus stop and then a road on the right going straight up.
    • Take that road and follow it, pass the school on your left side until you come to a junction, take the road to the right saying “Tijola”.
    • Drive this road for about 1.5 kilometers, when you pas the dry river bed, you will see a green sign saying “Cortigo Romero”, go onto this dirt track and follow until the end, you will see two black gates open and a sign saying “La Canada”, that is where the retreat venue is. Welcome!

    Arrival by airplane

    Please book your flight to arrive at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP).

    SunFoodYoga provides a low-cost group transfer on the arrival and departure dates of the retreat from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP). For one way, when three people share, it is 35 EUR per person; with two people, it comes to 45 EUR per person; and when alone, it is 80 EUR per person. Transfers are not included in the price of your retreat and are paid in cash to the driver.

    On your arrival day, the transfers are arranged between 10:00 and 15:00. When booking your flight, please choose a flight that lands not later than 14:30 to give you adequate time to get to the meeting point outside Terminal 3. On your departure day, the transfers will leave the venue from 10:00 onwards and you will arrive two hours later. If your flight departure time is quite late, you might prefer to go to the beach - about 10 minutes by taxi, bus, or train.

    Arrival by bus

    There is one direct bus to Orgiva, leaving at 15:00 from Malaga bus station and arriving at Orgiva at 18:00, stopping at every little village along the way. It is lovely when you want to see a little more from the coast of Spain. As you come out of the terminal onto the paved area into the outside air, just walk straight ahead of you underneath the overhead building. There, directly in front of you, is the bus stop. "A" bus, ask for Estacion de Auto-buses.

    The "A" runs about every 35 minutes. Don't be tempted to get on a free bus that uses the stop, it's the wrong one that goes to parking lot. Once at the bus station, you will need to buy a ticket for a coach to either Orgiva or Granada depending on which of the two onward routes that you choose. Buy your ticket from the "ALSA" (name of bus company) window or buy your ticket online.

    There are direct buses from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) to Granada bus station without having to go first to Malaga bus station: Busses from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) to Granada depart at 08:30, 10:45, 11:00, 11:30, 16:00, 18:30, and 20:45 with a journey time of two hours and 30 minutes. The fare is 11.43 EUR single or 13.72 EUR depending on bus.
