Set high in the hills of Ibiza with infinity Mediterranean sea views from the lawn, Villa Kumharas sleeps 11 to 12 people in five bedrooms. Four of the bedrooms are en-suite, and there is an additional main bathroom. On this yoga teacher training, there is two or sometimes three students sharing a room.

There is a sleek uber modern kitchen, large open plan dining area, large indoor yoga shala of 80 square meters with sea views, and many outdoor terraces and decks that can be used for yoga and meditation, al fresco dining, or just purely hanging out. Villa Kumharas has an infinity swimming pool, its own ample secluded grounds, and is surrounded by rural paths where you can walk in all directions to typical quaint villages (a rare treat in Ibiza).

The finca has been recently renovated using only the very highest quality materials and has a feel of elegant and homely simplicity, perfect for immersion in yoga. There are sabina wood beams throughout, both tiled and wooden floors, marble surfaces, Balinese tiles and stonework, antique Asian artifacts and decor, and stylish, comfortable furniture throughout.

Villa Kumharas is centrally heated, and as such is lovely in all seasons. The very beautiful, natural beach Cala Salada is a half an hour walk from Villa Kumharas.

Weekly themes

Week 1: Grounding: An intensive seven-day yoga and mindfulness immersion

Week 2: Deep embodied anatomy and physiology - Journeying into the body

Week 3: The practice of love - Connection and support through touch and embodied process

Week 4: Integration - Gathering it all together

The intensive program is structured in such a way in order to take into account the intensity of the 200-hour month training in a retreat environment. This structure offers spaces within the intensive where students can rest, recuperate, process, and gather energy (longer first week and short third week). This has come from Still Flowing Yoga Teacher Training's experience of teaching 22 trainings to date. This structure allows the training to be held in such a way that you can contain and integrate the work that you do together safely and effectively.

Course overview

Still Flowing Yoga Teacher Training is a somatic approach to the ancient wisdom teachings of yoga and meditation, skilfully introducing students to how the Buddhist meditation practices of mindfulness and metta can be integrated into the practice of yoga and its teaching in order to facilitate a clearer sense of direction, precision, care, and depth.

Thomas Hanna defined Somatics as "the field of study dealing with somatic phenomena, i.e., the human being as experienced by himself (or herself) from the inside.” He defined soma as the body experienced from within.

The somatic focus on Still Flowing is the thread that connects and integrates the complementary forms to explore - such as Scaravelli-inspired, slow flow gentle Vinyasa, mindfulness based, trauma sensitive, therapeutic and restorative, guiding students towards a gradual embodied awakening both in stillness and in movement.

Broadly speaking, Still Flowing Yoga Teacher Training is an integrative approach, offering students an accessible, direct, and modern interpretation of Patanjali’s Classical Eight Limbs of Ashtanga yoga interwoven with the Buddha’s teaching on mindfulness, firmly orientating students towards a state of embodied awakening within daily modern life, where these complementary practices are ultimately employed as tools for personal liberation.

Still Flowing yoga teacher training is non-performance based and as yoga teacher trainers, they aim to facilitate a program where students cultivate an understanding of the depth and beauty of simplicity within foundational asana rather than an immediately gratifying experience of “advanced” asana which can result, particularly over time, not only in physical injury but also in disregulation of the nervous system.

The program encourages students to be dilligent, engaged, and inquiring to benefit most from this approach. Please note that learning prescriptive routines and flows by heart will not form part of the teaching methodology - Still Flowing's methodological approach is inquiry-based. If you want to learn organically and intuitively in an intimate, safe, well held and familial atmosphere with quality individualized tuition, then this program is for you.

For 200-hour graduates from different yoga schools, as Still Flowing is a unique non-mainstream program as integrate some cutting edge work around regulating the autonomic nervous system through yoga asana, movement, and mindfulness practices and as such, you may find the content at the level of an advanced training with a clear therapeutic bias so do sign up! You can gain CPD advanced training credits for this with the UK Yoga Alliance.

Course content

Self-practice

The first practice of the day will be dedicated to developing a self practice which will be the foundation of your teaching life. 45 minutes daily will be allocated to self-practice, this period will also serve as an opportunity to integrate what you are learning in the other sessions into your own practice.

Led practice

You will experience and be introduced to different intensities of fluid and thematic sequences that are focused around foundation and ground, core unwinding, breath, undoing tension and release, and awakening different anatomical and physiological structures.

The flows are often creative, exploratory, and intuitive, drawing on complementary approaches to asana such as slow flow gentle Vinyasa, Scaravelli-inspired, somatic, mindfulness-based, and trauma sensitive approaches. The morning classes emphasize and showcase how to structure a class, how the different families of postures work together and how to form intelligent sequences.

Karma yoga / mindful silent work period

A daily karma yoga session or silent mindful work period is an integral part of the daily practice. 45 minutes is devoted to community tasks such as preparing the dinner, cleaning the yoga shala, taking charge of washing clothes, sweeping the outdoor spaces, washing up, cleaning the kitchen etc. An opportunity to work for the greater good, in community, in silence, also a change to discharge and integrate keeping connected to the daily aspects of life

Insight (mindfulness and metta) meditation

Please note that Buddhist meditation forms an integral part of the 200-hour program and the ongoing work into synthesizing the teachings of yoga and Buddhism. Daily mindfulness practice: Sitting, inquiry, dialogue, and embodiment.Teaching and practices on the four foundations of mindfulness. Continuous inquiry into the breath, the physical body, feelings, and emotions, thinking and the cognitive mind, and consciousness itself.

Teachings and practices on loving kindness (metta) as the home base for the cultivation of all the four brahmaviharas (immeasurable minds). A general introduction to basic Buddhadharma with an emphasis on the Buddha’s teaching on the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path

Asana technique and areas of inquiry

Inquiry into foundation, core, bandhas, and breath synchronized movement in side bending postures, extension postures, flexion postures, rotation postures, and balancing and sitting postures.

  • Unlocking the process of inquiry and open invitational exploratory yoga
  • Working with the gravity / rebound response in order to cultivate release through the spine along with stability, spaciousness, and lightness through the body
  • Unwinding the core, ongoing focus on unwinding and awakening the responsive deep core (psoas)
  • Bandhas - subtle bandha work - exploring how the body is supported from the inside out and experiencing how to contain energy in the body, directing the energy ever more deeply into awakening the core and spine
  • Cultivating felt sense - working with asana as a feeling practice and one that accesses reptilian and limbic circuits in the brain and establishes regulation at the level of the autonomic nervous system
  • Understanding how to balance the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and social engagement parts of the autonomic nervous system through asana, movement, mindfulness, metta, and complementary relational practices
  • Deep listening - working with the body’s language and internal dialogue in order to work individually with practice. Learning how to listen to another person's system - cultivating yoga practice and teaching for the individual
  • Languaging and witnessing - Learning how to use skillful, open, and inquiry-based language in order to empower students. Working with listening, witnessing, sharing, and relational exercises
  • Creative arts process - exploring the felt sense and internal landscape through contemplative writing and expressive arts practices
  • Integrating all of the above

Embodied yoga anatomy physiology

This part of the program is approximately 30 hours and takes up most of the first or second week depending on the program. It involves teaching anatomy and physiology through guided sensory experiences to let you learn about your body from the inside-out. It teaches you about the internal workings of the body through physical explorations: These movement experiences will let you connect with the structures you’re learning about in a richer context than from books alone.

You will journey through the nervous system, the core (diaphragm / psoas and spine), the bones, the fascia, the muscles, and the structures that support breathing. You will use anatomical and physiological awareness as a powerful tool to keep the body safe and the mind grounded, and as a way to hone your meditative somatic awareness as it flows deep into your own body exploring through felt sensation and discovering your own anatomy from the inside out.

    Gemma is the founder and director of Still Flowing Yoga Teacher Training and registered as a senior yoga teacher with UK Yoga Alliance. She teaches somatic and Scaravelli inspired yoga, Buddhist mindfulness, complementary embodied practices, and facilitates an open process. Since 2011, the work of Italian yogini Vanda Scaravelli, which honors the body’s intelligence and has creative, intuitive, and inquiry-based feel to it, she finds this works beautifully alongside the therapeutic work of Dr. Peter Levine (Somatic experiencing), greatly informs and inspires her approach to yoga

  • Blanche Mulholland

    Blanche’s journey with Shiatsu and yoga has led her to find joy in getting to know herself and others, an ever-deepening process. She finds great freedom and peace in allowing the body and breath to flow mindfully and spontaneously, exploring both traditional form and a more deconstructed, ‘freestyle’ approach. Embodiment and a strong earth connection are the roots of her practice and teaching, which she offers as her gift to you from her heart. She has 12 years of yoga practice in various styles and a deep grounding in Vipassana meditation (Buddhist insight practice).

  • Marcela Enriquez Wakeham

    Marcela specializes in experiential anatomy and physiology of movement. She also has a degree in contemporary dance, worked as a choreographer, and has taught Pilates for 15 years. Marcela is a pulsing massage bodywork practitioner, and she is authorized to facilitate Dance of Awareness workshops, a dance group therapy licensed by Tim Brown and Clare Osbond, the creators of this group-based therapy. She is also a devotee practitioner of Continuum.

    Cynthia is a certified yoga teacher in a variety of styles including Restorative yoga, somatic expressive therapy, trauma-sensitive yoga, expressive arts and yoga, prenatal yoga, mindfulness meditation, yoga Nidra, and Still Flowing yoga. Her current yoga teaching is infused with gentle and restoring yoga asana, calming guided visualizations and breathing techniques, poetic language, and mindful somatic inquiry (encouraging you to explore your own experience and felt sense) while incorporating technical details for therapeutic precision.

The yoga teacher training program takes place in Ibiza, Spain, Cala Salada on the sunset West Coast of the island. Fly direct to Ibiza from all over the world, or if not, the closest mainland Spanish airport is Barcelona and then get an internal flight to Ibiza.

Villa Kumharas is remote, located up a long track that wends its way up through pine forest, in a still untouched area of Ibiza. As this is the case, students who enroll on the training must be prepared to spend the month of training in a retreat environment and be prepared to unplug from the distractions and excess of the “normal world”.

At Villa Kumharas, you will be provided with vegetarian healthy food that is prepared by the yoga teacher trainees as a communal daily activity on a rota basis with help from the team. Local fruit and vegetables, grains, pulses, and rice will be used as the basis for your diet. Vegetarian brunch and buffet style dinner are prepared daily. Students are welcome to all day mineral water, tea, and coffee.

During this yoga teacher training, weekends are free. You can choose from the most amazing beaches in Europe, beautiful small Ibicenco villages where you can wander, shop and people watch, hippie markets, chill out bars and lounges, hiking, swimming in azure Mediterranean seas, and many delicious diverse restaurants to sample.
