Yoga Retreat in Spain

When Eleanor was just beginning to train as a teacher, she went on a 2-week yoga retreat. She had slightly scoffed at the idea of a retreat, but she had a real urge to get away and to focus on her. However, as a working student, she found most retreats to be prohibitively expensive. She was very lucky to find one that was affordably priced, and my time away both strengthened her practice and broadened her horizons. Now that she has over half a decade of teaching experience, and has obtained her advanced teaching certification, she feels ready herself to offer a unique retreat to others. Join this affordable retreat in Northern Tenerife, with every effort made to minimize the impact on the environment.

The accommodation is clean, beautiful and comfortable, but the rooms are simple - you’ll have a cozy bed and place to store your things, and lots of communal areas (or your own bed, or the island!) to hang out in. Most of the accommodation is shared, although you’re welcome to splash out for sole occupancy of a twin, double, or the triple room if you want more privacy. Make sure that the friendly, simple hostel vibe is right for you beforehand!

Programm

The group will be divided into two groups of about 6. Each group will have 2 sessions every day, with some extra sessions with both groups. Evening and morning sessions will be offered on the arrival and departure days respectively. With the small group sizes, you'll get personal attention, adjustments, and chances to ask questions!

Which styles will be taught?

  • Vinyasa - an active practice with an emphasis on moving with your breath. You can break a sweat and build strength as well as flexibility with this style. Eleanor teaches a general Vinyasa that is not solely informed by any school of yoga, although will have elements of Ashtanga and Jivamukti.
  • Yin - a very passive practice with a focus on deep stretching, tension release and joint care. Everyone - both those which very tight muscles and those with a lot of flexibility - can benefit from aspects of this practice.
  • Yin yang - this is a name for a class that combines vinyasa and yin in one. Eleanor strongly believes that Vinyasa and Yin complement and enrich each other beautifully.

What age/ fitness should I be?

The retreat is designed with adults in mind. However, if you are a family group and would like to attend with your teenager/ a young person, get in touch and we can discuss whether this is right for you and for your young person! Under 18s will only be allowed in group 2, as some of the more intensive movements are not always brilliant for very young bodies which are still developing. If you are quite new to yoga or worry you are not fit or flexible enough, please do not worry - that is how the vast majority of people (Eleanor included) feel when they begin. If you are concerned, please ask her!

If you are: working with an injury; chronic condition; pregnant or post-postpartum; suffering from your mental health; or have any other concern, please contact Eleanor so you can discuss whether she can support your individual needs.

How does it work with the groups?

There will be two groups each week to accommodate as many people as possible. %Group 1 - This group will be suitable for people who have quite a bit of yoga experience, or yoga teachers/ trainees - who want to be pushed hard. The sessions will be longer and start earlier in the morning (in order to practice whilst its cooler). Group 1 classes and workshops last 2 hours, plus a 1.5-hour introduction session and one 3-hour intensive.

Group 2 - This group will be suitable for beginners, and those with a little less experience. It’s also ideal for those with more experience, who want to take it a little easier and enjoy lie-ins - it’s completely OK to be gentle with yourself! Group 2 classes last 1.25 hours, the workshops are 1.5 hours, plus a 1-hour introduction session and one 2.25 hour intensive. Whole group workshops are for 2 hours. The groups will each have around 6 people, so you will get loads of personal attention!

The hostel is located in a little town in Northern Tenerife called La Orotava. This area is much less touristy than the south of the island, and is a short bus ride away from some truly beautiful beaches and places of interest. Puerto de la Cruz, a beach town, is about 1 hour away on foot, and true black sand beaches are also accessible!

Verpflegung

Spring Yoga wants the food to be satisfying, healthy, and sourced with sustainability in mind. With an eye on the carbon footprint, the food will be vegetarian, and locally sourced on Tenerife wherever possible. Spring Yoga will also choose organic wherever they can but will prioritize local sourcing.

Spring Yoga will keep sugar to a minimum and avoid transfats and processed foods wherever we can. There will be plenty of vegetables and fruits at every meal, along with plants and some animal protein sources (yogurt, eggs, cheese). Spring Yoga won’t use animal protein unless they're certain the animals have a good standard of welfare.

Please let Spring Yoga know any dietary requirements well in advance, and they can discuss how they can best support you. There will always be at least one fully vegan (vegetarian) and a fully gluten-free option.

Not all yoga retreats offer coffee or alcohol. Spring Yoga decided to, as they want people to be able to use their time away as they wish. If you want to take a break from caffeine and/ or alcohol, of course, that is completely fine! If you want to sample some local wine with dinner or enjoy a beer on the roof, that’s great too. Just be respectful of each other, and be considerate of other people’s needs.

All meals are served buffet style. You can enjoy your plate on the roof, in the courtyard, or in the communal inside space. You can socialize, or take time to eat by yourself. Simple packed lunches are available for collection at breakfast if you sign up the day before.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Tenerife–North Airport (TFN). From this airport, take bus 30 from Aeropuerto Norte and get off at stop Enlace Orotava. From there, either walk for about 30 minutes to the hostel or get bus 352 and get off at stop la Reina and walk for 5 minutes. In total public transport takes about 1 hour. If you take a car or taxi, it’s about a 25-minute drive.

Alternatively, fly to Tenerife–South Airport (TFS). From this airport, take a bus 111 to Intercambiador Sta. Cruz. From there, there are several options, one is to take the 108 to Enlace Orotava. From there, either walk for about 30 minutes to the hostel or get bus 352 and get off at stop la Reina and walk for 5 minutes. In total public transport takes about 3 hours. By car or taxi: it’s about a 1-hour drive.
