The Sewall House is a good choice for people going through some sort of change in their life, whether it be work-related, relationship or health-related. People also choose them because they are in Maine, in a uniquely inviting historic home. All guests have also shared that the smaller number of attendees feels less like a "university" than some of the larger yoga retreats. They also have an isolated camp on the nearby lake, rented by special application, and for overnight stays. During the offseason, they can arrange special retreats if requested. Each participant who pays for the course, room, and board will have a private bedroom for rest and study. The rooms are wonderful, comfortable, and beautifully furnished.

Pre-Requisites & Course Content

  • Participation in at least 3 yoga classes, Kundalini, and Svaroopa© yoga
  • Suggested reading, with a written observation: Fly like a Butterfly by Shakta Khalsa

Yoga retreats help you to drop into your whole self, creating the best possible place for you to embrace new information, feeling incredibly lighter and pleasantly surprised to find that just a little bit of yoga brings into you, profound states of deep relaxation, inner calm, peace and a good amount of openness in both your spine and hips.

During these twenty-one hours of yoga study and peaceful retreat, teachers will acquire an in-depth understanding of how to teach creative yoga to children in a simple, loving and practical way. At the conclusion of the training, teachers will be kids yoga practitioners and able to integrate skillfully, five, ten or fifteen-minute yoga and movement lessons and practices into the school day or as an integration tool as needed. Teachers will also experience a deep calming peacefulness in themselves and a sure way to pass this calmness on to their students.

You do not need to be previously certified in yoga to attend this training. Each day will consist of four hours of practicum in the morning, and nature outings in the afternoon. Vegetarian meals and evening yoga classes are included in the training costs. Courses of study will draw from dance-in-education principles as well as training philosophies from the Kundalini yoga and Svaroopa© yoga lineage.

Classroom yoga content is based on the Dancing Spider Yoga class, a Montessori and Waldorf inspired story, filled with rhymes easily learned and remembered, in a simple sequential rhythm, focusing on heart-centered mantras and yoga poses.

Designed specifically to encourage motor movement, this interactive scripted class, including meditation, is perfect for enhancing body-mind awareness in children.

Finally, this professional development children’s yoga teacher training is a way for teacher's to experience a release of control, letting go, and a return to an abiding relaxation; keys to fulfilling the role a teacher has with children in their classroom.

Time for teachers is essential for awakening your own consciousness, your ability to have compassion and understanding for the great task you are charged with. Yoga and creative movement are also done inside or outside, bringing yourself and children into a greater relationship with yoga’s roots, where it actually began. Relationship building with peers, and learning new concepts and poses together, is a sure way to stay inspired as you embark on this new journey of awakening, understanding, healing and revisiting your own inner child.

Based on a scripted curriculum, this weekend training offers the experienced teacher and the novice a change in direction, a way for developing new experiences for yourselves and remembering what you deeply love. It’s yoga for both teachers and by design, children and their parents. The class is quick-paced, but you can take your time learning and making these simple rhymes your own.

The Dancing Spider Yoga Teaching Certificate is awarded after

5-hours teaching the curriculum in the classroom or community center. Final reports are sent via short video and written observations. Also required is 2 hours of community service in addition to classroom time, offering a class to either youth-at-risk, homeless, and/or a parent's and children's class at a shelter.

All observations, classroom hours, and your reading reviews are due 8 weeks after completing the DSY training.

Sewall House is located in a small village in northern Maine. It is only 30 miles from the Canada-United States border. The bordering town in United States is Houlton, Maine (passport required). In Canada, the bordering town is Woodstock, New Brunswick which is 92 kilometers west of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Northern Maine is not highly populated. The Sewall House is situated in a town of 700 people with two nearby lakes and Baxter State Park with its mighty Mt. Katahdin. There are gift shops nearby, a number 1 rated 18 hole golf course, one restaurant, and a few diners but no commercial chain stores or coffee houses. Island Falls is a pure small-town in New England.

Sewall House serves a vegetarian menu in keeping with yoga practice. The food is ample, tasty, mostly organic and prepared on the premises. Things like their own granola, home-made yoghurt, bread and desserts and main dishes with vegetables and various legumes are served. Sewall House gets much of their fresh produce from a local Amish community and local farms. They do not serve alcohol or meat. They do serve coffee.
