    An Excellent Retreat Environment

CONS Negatives: the only orientation to the community was a Visitor's Guide; when I return, I will have arranged beforehand meetings with spiritual mentors, massage therapists, etc., before arriving...

PROS Positives: 45 miles from Charlottesville, Virginia; a beautiful place for solitude, retreat and rest. The philosophy of Integral Yoga invites you to be immersed in a rich experience for mind, body and soul. All faith traditions are welcomed in this immersion into an environment of contemplation, conversation, meditation and activity.

"My three day retreat to Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville couldn't have come at a better time, especially since I live in the DMV area (inauguration weekend). The experience was truly refreshing and spiritual. The meals were fabulous, vegetarian and absolutely delicious. The location is very secluded, no cell-service for about a 20 mile radius, but the WiFi helped me stay connected with my family. "

"I would recommend Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville to anyone who is open-minded and striving to be more connected with their spirituality, humanity and nature. You will feel comforted to be around "beings" with the same spiritual connection, energy and desires. If I visited during the warmer months, I'm sure the experiences would have been even better."

Just a few days at the ashram definitely granted me that space to recenter myself, and I left feeling uplifted from being around the amazing people there and the overall atmosphere. "From the booking to the end of the Welcome Weekend - everything was perfect. I was handled with professionalism, efficiency, but most of all kindness throughout the entire process. When I arrived at Yogaville for the weekend, I really did not know what to expect. I came by myself and was a first time visitor, but very quickly I felt very much at home and at peace. By nature, I am a workaholic and what I was looking for at Yogaville was a sense of peace and quiet and time to get centered and calm again. By the end of the weekend, I was all that and more. The meals were excellent and even though I am not typically a vegetarian, I was amazed at how energized I felt eating your vegetarian meals. The yoga classes were great in that never once did I feel out of place or under any pressure to do anything crazy. The talks were also very welcoming, even though I only attended a few (by choice, did not want to be on a schedule). The two most magical moments were 1) the visit to Lotus, which was pretty awesome to visit. It is the most beautiful meditation center I have ever been to and 2) waking up to 7-8 lady bugs in my room. It was the first time it ever happened and many have told me it was a sign of new life and good luck. If that is the case, then I owe it all to Yogaville for blessing my weekend with such positive energy.Thank you and I will be back."

"I had a wonderful time on the 4-Day Silent Retreat this fall. At first, I didn't really quite know what to expect as this was my first silent retreat. I was a bit nervous and felt awkward at first, being in a guest house with several other people I never met before and then going quickly into silence. But after the first day, I really began my journey inward and started to truly feel the power of silence and felt I was able to fully absorb what all the various speakers had to offer as well as what my own inner reflection and my journaling gave me. I loved the variety of speakers as well as the schedule of meditation and yoga. The meals were absolutely delicious. I felt the retreat had a nice balance of information, meditation, yoga and alone-time. I would absolutely do another one and plan to. The staff was wonderful."

"We were very happy at Yogaville. We greatly enjoy the atmosphere and the diet, as well as the yoga practices and the friendly people. We love the ideal of respect for everybodys traditions, including the Secular. We believe in the freedom of religions, which also means respect for everyone's religion. I do believe we all worship the same God with different names. I believe in Jesus and therefore I claim to be a Christian. My problem is that I have always been very independent and I enjoy my freedom. I am not sure what to do with the benefits of Yogaville. I could return every year just to enjoy the atmosphere and I do practice the same philosophy every day. But, I am not sure what to commit to. I think I am like a Catholic who goes to church sometimes, but does not do anything as part of the church. Thank you for your interest."

"My first silent retreat at Yogaville (wait I have to smile with myself for a moment) has been echoing for one and a half years. Although there seems to be a natural energy of compassion at Yogaville the program leaders and assisting staff carried that compassion, assistance, knowledge and personal experience through themselves into contact with each of us. Although I was initially concerned that being silent would be uncomfortable I found it to be a vehicle into a depth of being and peacefulness. By my voluntary agreement to be silent I found that my reactive and responsive thoughts did not need to be expressed. I became an observer of my inner thoughts that now had a chance to be felt and not just thought. A peacefulness settled within me. Whatever I needed was provided by the staff from food, blankets and transportation to knowledge, meditative guidance and insightful dharma talks. All I needed to do was be.Within that shift of awareness a natural state of compassion arose not only for myself but for each of us in the retreat. My usual need to read or be more active was replaced by a felt sense of being connected and content. A sense of joy arose from watching the leaves on the wonderful oak trees sway in the breeze as its movement became alive bringing the energy of the earth upwards and back into the open sky. I found myself in the middle of earth and sky just as the oak tree; with the same life force flowing through.I did return for a second silent retreat about six months ago without any of the concerns of being silent. I found that opening into the space, environment, leaders and staff a thankful return to the peace and quiet of the silent retreat experience. At home, work and play I am more able to touch my own experience and be more open, compassionate and attentive to both myself and others. I look forward to many more."

"My husband surprised me with a long weekend stay at the Ashram and I made the mistake of reading Yelp reviews prior to our stay which to be honest, almost made me not want to go. Needless to say, I was a bit skeptical but went forward with our visit and kept an open mind."

"I was pleased to find out that the negative reviews were not accurate in my opinion. For what it is worth, we did have a private room and bath and that may make a big difference in one's level of comfortableness. For me, I don't like sharing a bathroom with people so having a private room meant a great deal to me. "

"Our private room was in Lotus Building 1 and was very clean and spacious. The room had an air conditioner/heating unit that we could control and also had a mini-refrigerator and coffee maker. We were very close to the little market that they have on the grounds so our wi-fi connection was outstanding while there. Cell phone reception was not and it is spotty at best so be prepared for that. "

"Beyond logistics, you have to keep an open mind. This is an Ashram and they have rules. Nothing outrageous as some reviews would indicate, but they do try to keep a level of peacefulness and respect throughout the Ashram. You do need to remove your shoes before dining (you can wear socks though), a small prayer is said prior to getting your food, and the first 20 min or so of lunch is silent while a prayer or reading is being said. The food was delicious - fresh out of their garden. Wonderful tasting vegetables and salads. Please keep in mind that the food is all vegetarian so if you need more protein that what they offer (soups with beans, lentils, etc.), then just bring some protein bars to survive. I did and that worked wonderfully for me. I also did drink some soda in the privacy of my room as I am not a coffee drinker which helped because I didn't have caffeine withdrawals that some people experience. Small things that can make a big difference in not being miserable!"

"The grounds itself are beautiful and peaceful! Take advantage of the van tour (1.5 hours) on Saturdays. It's a small tour that visits all the key places (shrine, temple, etc.) and provides you with a good understanding of the history and what Swami Satchidananda’s interfaith vision was all about. It also brings you to the overlook point that has really nice views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and James River. Don't miss that!"

"My only complaint was that the yoga classes were super early (6AM) which is not for me as I'm not an early morning person. Wish they had worked in a basic class late morning for the late risers."

"All in all, a wonderful and relaxing weekend. Hope you enjoy!"

I was very impressed by all the people who worked there, very knowledgeable about the programs and defining them. Everyone was helpful. We stayed in the lotus building, which was two twin beds and a private bathroom, very basic, but that is what it is all about. "A friend and I just returned from the "welcome weekend" program. What a great mini escape! We had dorm accommodations, which were three bunk beds in a huge room. Dorm style and private bathrooms were available on the women only floor. There are no elevator here, so don't bring really heavy bags. Also, no shoes are allowed inside any of the buildings, so it is best if you bring slip on shoes. The food was fantastic! It was all vegetarian and organic. You should definitely visit the lotus shrine when it is illuminated. It is simply beautiful!! The energy in the mediation second floor is incredible. We enjoyed hiking through the trails and up the mountain for the views. There is a variety of yoga classes available daily. Everyone we met was so open and friendly. I would love to go back for a workshop. My wife and I purchased a "welcome weekend package and checked in on the Friday afternoon. The greeting was warm and welcoming. We then made our way to the modest accommodations. The staff, setting, yoga, and meditation were all very good. This is a place for restoration not papering. The meals are wholesome yet basic and vegetarian. The environment is peaceful and grounding. If youre looking for a place to reset the clock this is it!"

"This visit to Yogaville, my third and longest stay, was a wonderful alternative to the usual New Year's revelry. Some 70 other people gathered for a four-night silent retreat. We received instruction and guidance in meditation and yoga, and had the opportunity to spend time in the lotus temples as well as visit and meditate in Swami Satchidananda's home overlooking the James River and Blue Ridge Mountains. At night, I saw more stars than I'd seen in a long time, one of the benefits of the rural setting.I stayed in the lotus guesthouse and got the restful sleep that I badly needed in a spacious, comfortable, and quiet room. Having tea, honey, and pot to heat water was a nice touch. As always, the vegetarian and vegan meals were delicious. The staff and rest of the community are kind, warm, and understanding. The accommodation was simple and adequate especially since we didn't spend much time in our room. There was too much to do. We hiked one day. We visited the various areas of the ashram including the beautiful lotus shrine and Kailash. The food was excellent. The resident swamis, instructors, and devotees were wonderful and so eager to assist and educate. The place was filled with love. We enjoyed the meditation classes. The yoga beginners classes were good. Overall, this was a weekend with a difference that I would surely do again and again."

"Try the welcome weekend at Yogaville and you will come back. It is a lovely place, nice ambiance, great staff, and has good yoga and meditation sessions. The food isnt the best part since you have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options."

"The classes were nice, some better than others but average overall. The class in library that someone talks about, happened to me too and it was alright not too bad. There were a lot of people who were there for the weekend and almost none for the rest of the week. So if you are looking for peace and quiet try week days."

"My family and I had an outstanding time. This beautiful ashram is staffed by some of the most beautiful and caring people I've ever met. We tented in the campground to save a few dollars. The vegetarian food was exceptional. As far as yoga ashram go, this is the lap of luxury. It seemed there was never a moment without a yoga class, meditation or some other interesting activity. I would highly recommend this as a yoga retreat for anyone and it was very family friendly."

"I stayed in Yogaville for one week and completed two different programs. The first program was Dao Flow yoga and the second one was about building your Sadhana meditation and yoga practice. I stayed in a tent site. Every tent site has a wooden deck platform and is 20 to 50 feet away from another tent site. The bathhouse is the nicest camping bathhouse I've ever been in since it has drywall, a real toilet, and private showers, but it's a camping bathhouse, so it's hot and there are bugs and normal camping stuff. It's maintained with care and your expectations should be that it's a camping bathhouse and not a resort. The calm, still, and, judgment-free environment is like nothing I've ever experienced. Everyone who works there is amazingly helpful and calm. I love the atmosphere. If you're looking for a place to reflect, unwind, live a simple life, and develop your own spirituality this is definitely the place for you! There is also no cell phone service unless you have Verizon, but there is free Wi-Fi even on the campsites. The wireless farther out towards the tent sites is insanely slow, but honestly that's great because in that environment, it's great to disconnect from that part of life. I wasn't bothered too much by it. It was very nice to disconnect from the world for a few days!"

"Know first of all that this Ashram is a spiritual community, not a yoga school. Yes, you can take yoga, and meditation classes (beginners and more advanced), and the three teachers I had during the weekend were all great. But the 200 or so people who live at Yogaville are devoted followers of the late Sri Swami Satchidananda. You will see his image and hear a lot about him. I saw that part of the weekend, including a Saturday night prayer service, as a learning experience. Everyone was as nice as could be. The vegetarian meals were tasty. My daughter and I stayed at the Lotus Guest House, a plain motel room but fine for 2 nights. I recommend the tour (if available), and visiting the shrines. You can hike to them from the main area in 20-30 min. You are out in the sticks, but that's what makes this a tranquil place."

"Eternally grateful for your light and love. I met a lovely couple during my visit who are not connected to a yoga studio or teacher. They simply Googled retreats and found Yogaville. They loved it and we made a wonderful friendship-connection. I believe this is a small testimony of the positive energy and acceptance that flows from every corner of this beautiful ashram."

"My first time and I totally fell in love with this place. In Yogaville you have a fantastic opportunity to experience the real Yoga life in all of its aspects: Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga. It's just amazing ."

"A friend and I went here for a couple of days. I've been doing yoga for years and she just needed a break from reality. The accommodations were simple and very clean. We stayed in a private room with two twin beds and had our own bathroom. I feel like this was worth it for privacy. The property was beautiful and easy to get to. We were there during a snowstorm so we didn't get to do much other than relax, take yoga classes, read, and eat. We didn't take part in the meditation. We both liked the yoga classes. We had a different teacher for each class so you felt like you had a little variety. One thing we found a little strange was the chanting. Its just something they do there. I wasn't used to it because I had never done it before in a yoga class and my friend was a little weirded out by it because she didn't know what they were saying. However, you weren't forced to participate. I think it was just part of the class set up.I personally loved the food. I'm vegetarian for the most part, I do eat fish and dairy products. However, the choices they offered were vegan but I thought they were delicious and nutritious. I don't eat processed foods so I was in heaven. I'm sort of a health nut so I enjoyed the clean eating. My friend thought the food was okay but she is a meat eater and is picky anyway. She said it was okay for a couple of days. It was like a detox. They had a large variety of teas but no coffee. But there is a caf on the campus that sells coffee and sweets, so you can get whatever fancy latte you are used to.I would probably go back. I'd love to see the grounds when there isn't ten inches of snow on the ground. Its a great personal retreat to get away from the daily grind. There are no TVs or phones, but I did get Verizon cell service. It was peaceful and relaxing. I felt lighter when I got back home."

"I would say I'm an 'experienced' yogi, with some exposure to the Integral or Hatha style. The classes I took on my weekend stay were a mixed bag. One 'joint freeing' class was very low-key but very informative (a little too informative imho - too much talking - not enough doing)"

"I am a novice at meditation - and I struggled with this. Guided meditation had its advantages - it kept me somewhat focused. However, by the end of the weekend, I was over the chanting."

"If I ever go back (and I think I will) I will keep clear of the Pujas (too much chanting) and do more of a mix of guided and non-guided meditation."
