This retreat is designed to offer not just a week of yoga but also time to relax, unwind and refresh yourself. The retreat consists of a blend of Yin and Yang Yoga along with simple meditation and Pranayama sessions. The morning sessions will be Yang energy (Vinyasa Flow): stimulating, energising, dynamic and strengthening. The afternoon/evening sessions will be Yin energy (Yin Yoga/ Slow Supported Asana): calming, centering, relaxing and slow. This combination Yin and Yang Yoga will help you to create the optimal balance in both your Yoga asana practice and your life. Rustic Retreats run beautifully rustic yoga retreats in the Sierra Espuna mountain range in Southern Spain. We have a stunning estate, totally off-grid, with zero light pollution, solar power and fresh spring water. Our unique yoga platform sits nestled into the side of the mountain, with breath taking views across the valley. Our chef will create a myriad of fresh, healthy vegetarian meals to tantalise your pallet, all using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

Accommodation is provided in beautifully furnished 5-metre bell tents. Nestled amongst the lemon and orange groves, the bell tents are simple but sumptuous, with electricity and comfortable beds. Each tent can sleep up to three people. Crisp bed linen and pool towels are provided. There are solar hot and cold powered showers facilities. Internet access is available. There is a small shop on site for all those little essentials you might need.

Programm

Styles of yoga to be taught:

The yoga practice will be open to all levels. Modifications will be given throughout. We are all so different, physically, mentally and emotionally. You will be encouraged to really listen to what your body needs, and this may change from day to day. You will be encouraged to take the practice at your own pace and nurture your body and mind, at the same time as developing strength and flexibility physically and mentally.

We will start each day with a dynamic Vinyasa Flow (Yang energy) to recharge and energize ourselves body and mind.The asana sequences will be built up step by step through the class with options given so that all abilities and body types are taken care of and everyone can feel fully included.There will be some repetition during the morning sessions which will help to set some muscle memory and empower you to develop your own home practice.

The evening practice will be a restorative Yin Flow. A chance to really unwind and let go along with balancing out the Yang energy. In our Yin asana practice we stay in each asana for longer and using props for support. The use of props (blocks and cushions) allows us to stay with asanas for longer with out discomfort or stress, this method gives the fascia (connective tissue) of the body time to release. Yin is a great complement to the Yang dynamic Yoga practices bringing balance to the energy of your body and mind.

There is one workshop a day, it may be in the morning or afternoon. There is also the option to visit local markets on Wednesday and Sunday.

Your Rustic Retreats Journey:

During this week you will be introduced to both Vinyasa Flow Yoga and Yin Yoga. The Vinyasa Flow will be in the mornings and have a stimulating and energizing Yang energy, the afternoon/evening sessions will be slow, gentle and relaxing Yin energy for a balanced and well rounded practice.

Each morning session will have a theme or “peak pose” around which the sequence is designed. After a short meditation or Pranayama session we will move into some Sun Salutations (several variations will be taught) then into the main asana sequence which will build steadily offering options for all abilities and body types. We will work through a series of strengthening standing asanas, then into some inversions or back bends which are followed by seated asanas to calm down a touch before breakfast.

Our afternoon/evening sessions will have a Yin energy giving us time to relax and unwind while enjoying some supported releasing Yoga asanas. These sessions will compliment and balance the morning session. Some of these sessions will include a Yoga Nidra, Yogic sleep or deep relaxation.

During the week we learn to challenge ourselves without being competitive or risking injury, we will take time to truly listen to the sensations occurring in or bodies and how to understand what the body is saying. You will discover how to improve your strength, flexibility, balance, posture and concentration through the practice of Yoga asana. You will also learn to accept what you cannot change and how to adapt your asana practice to help and not harm your body.

At the end of the week, you will be left with a good foundation to be able to begin a home practice, to understand how to adapt/develop your Yoga practice effectively and to love and appreciate the body you are blessed with.

Workshops

Workshop 1 - Asana Clinic

We will look at the common mistakes that occur in Yoga asana along with the potential injuries caused and how to avoid them.This will be a Q &A session as well as physical practice. If there are common issues within the group we will use this session to begin to address them and then continue to watch out for them and correct them through the rest of the week. Some basic anatomy will be covered in this session to help you understand why your body may or may not be able to achieve particular asanas.

Workshop 2 - It is not how it looks, it is about how it FEELS!

An exploration into asana while blindfolded. Taking away the sight in asana can helps us to truly feel what is going on in our bodies, to learn to listen to and understand bodily sensations, to deeply connect with our bodies and our breath. Too often in Yoga there is a heavy emphasis on the “look” of the asana and the body and the Yoga becomes as shallow as an Instagram pic. Working with a blindfold helps to remove the desire to compete, show-off or compare ourselves to others and focus on taking care of ourselves and being mindful in our asana practice.

Workshop 3 - Back Bends

How to approach backward bending asanas safely without fear. In this session we will look at how to develop back flexibility in a safe effective way and enjoy the energizing and liberating feelings they can induce. We will be using some props and possibly partners in this session.

Workshop 4 - Turning it all up-side-down

Exploring some of the full inversions. Headstand and handstand can feel very scary and even impossible. This workshop will empower you to get started with these asanas, we will learn techniques and exercises to gradually build strength and confidence needed to achieve inversions safely.

Workshop 5 - Time to Fly

Discover some fun basic acro-yoga exercises , we will be working in pairs and groups to take asana to new levels as well as working on trust, communication and bonding with each other. This will be a fun and playful session .

Alison Hawkins
Allison been practicing yoga for more than 20 years. She has spent some time in Mysore, India practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa with Sheshadri, and also back bending with Venkatesh. She has lived for many years in Asia with her husband running their own Yoga studios teaching drop-in classes, workshops, retreats and teacher training's. Her main teaching styles are Vinyasa Flow, Yin Yoga, and Aerial Yoga. Her focus being long term functional movement and overall fitness, making Yoga accessible to all body types within an empowering experience.

Verpflegung

Stimulate all your senses whilst you absorb the bright colors, beautiful textures, tantalizing flavors, and sublime aromas of the fresh food served at Rustic Retreats. The chef will create a myriad of fresh, healthy vegetarian meals to tantalize your pallet, all using the ripest, freshest, seasonal ingredients that are locally produced either from their very own organic garden and vegetable patch or from the local market and farmers.

Varieties of fruit are growing freely on the site such as lemons, oranges, almonds, pomegranate, and carob to name but a few. All vegetarian meals are lovingly prepared by a trained chef in the outdoor kitchen and are served 'al fresco' whenever possible. All meals are included in the price. The meals have been so popular with the clients that they are looking at producing a recipe book for next season.

Example menu:

  • Start the day with a fruit smoothie or refreshing mint tea.
  • Breakfast baby spinach omelet, cereals, fruit and French toast.
  • Lunch bell pepper frittata, bean and yogurt salad, and pumpkin bread.
  • Evening meal squash and zucchini casserole with wild rice and lemon tart.

Exclusions

  • All day snack menu is available but cost is not included in the price. Alcohol is available at a small extra charge.
