During this retreat, you will stay either in a private or a double room in Niyagama House. It offers comfort double room, deluxe double room, grand deluxe double room, superior double room, and twin suite room. The comfort double room is the only room located on the second floor and face to the east while the other rooms are on the first floor.

The deluxe double room faces east and south to the pool and has a private balcony. The grand deluxe double room is facing west. The superior double room is facing to the west and has a private balcony. The deluxe double or twin suite are facing east and north. The superior double or twin suite are facing west and have a big private balcony.

Niyagama House is a courtyard house with a serene, soothing atmosphere that was built in the traditional style of a courtyard house. The inner courtyard, high ceilings, airy rooms, and verandas in combination with plenty of fresh air and tropical sun make this house a comfortable and tranquil retreat. For a healthy flow of energy, the rules of the Sri Lankan Feng Shui’ were followed. A tradition still respected here by many people.

Three verandas, the lounge with its sunset balcony, and the roof terrace with 360 degrees panoramic view offer plenty of space to relax. From the south veranda, you will step into the large garden that surrounds the entire house. There are growing tropical flowers between shady trees. The jewel of the garden is the large and chlorine-free 18-meter pool, purified with an eco-friendly copper-silver-ionization method.

The pool is ideal for some vigorous exercise if that is what you need or for just relaxing and cooling down in the shallow areas. The seven guest rooms are located on the first and second floor of the building. While three of the rooms have their private balcony, there is also plenty of additional space to chill outside in privacy.

The rooms have a king-sized or long king-sized canopy bed with comfortable mattresses, soft cotton linen, and pillows in different sizes, air conditioning, mosquito nets, a ceiling fan, an elegant wooden furniture with spacious wardrobe in traditional Sri Lankan style, granite floors, an ensuite bathroom with a large "rain dance" shower, hand shower, high pressure hot and cold water, soft towels, and hairdryer. All rooms are non-smoking rooms. Smoking is also not allowed throughout the whole house and the pool area.

The rooms also have mini fridge (filled with your requests, complimentary drinking water, in room personal electric laptop-size safe, telephone that connects you with the room service and the office, nightly turn down service, daily housekeeping, Wi-Fi available in public areas, laundry, and ironing service.

To optimize the opportunities for rest and relaxation, Niyagama House does not have televisions in the rooms. All rooms are non-smoking rooms and smoking is also not allowed throughout the whole house and the pool area. At Niyagama house, you will experience a perfect blend of eastern hospitality and western comforts full of tranquility and relaxation.

Focusing on the optimal regeneration and wellbeing of the guests, Niyagama House offers the following service for all guests staying four nights or longer: If you do not like air conditioning, they can take off the glass frames in front of the open wood carvings above doors and windows of your room. These woodcarving elements allow permanent air circulation. The additional ceiling fan will guarantee you a good and healthy night’s sleep protected by the mosquito net.


This is the perfect retreat for you who like to do only one yoga session in the morning, as in the afternoon you will do Mindful Self-Compassion workshops and learn meditations, find your personal affirmations, reflect your core values, and listen to you inner healing wisdom.

Elke de Silva states that you all carry some of these little "parcels" around with us which are experiences in your past, wrong paradigms, and unreleased connections with people whom you no longer deal with and you all like to be distracted in order not to face these "dark drawers inside". Mindful Self-Compassion showed him a wonderful way to reflect on his core values, listen to his inner wisdom, and face difficult emotions or situations in a very self-supporting, loving way.

Aerial yoga

Aerial yoga is a fun new way to practice traditional yoga. By using a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling, you elevate your asana in a playful way. Using a soft, fabric aerial hammock suspended from the ceiling, you will explore new and traditional yoga asanas (yogic postures) with your body weight partially or fully supported.

This allows you to expand flexibility, increase the range of motion, build strength, lengthen the spine, and relax the nervous system. Never more than a few feet off the ground, you will let go into gravity, be held in the hammock, and awaken yogic bliss.

Hatha yoga - the foundation

‘Ha-Tha’ means the yoga in which the aim is to unify the two energies of ‘Ha’ (the left, cool energy of the moon) and ‘Tha’ (the right, hot energy of the sun) and merge them together in the center of the body.

The classical Hatha yoga in the lineage of Swami Sivananda (1887 - 1963) is a holistic yoga, which also includes the development of the body (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation. It is practiced in a special sequence in order to make sure, that the student gets to know all aspects of his being, as the true depth of yoga is not immediately sensible for a beginning student.

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) meditation

Mindful Self-Compassion combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated that MSC significantly increased self-compassion, compassion for others, mindfulness, and life satisfaction, as well as decreased depression, anxiety, and stress.

Mindful self-compassion teaches you to take care of yourself in difficult moments and situations. To talk to yourself as if you were talking in a supportive way to a good friend and to learn some wonderful gentle ways of how to face difficult emotions.

Vinyasa Flow - a dance with the breath

‘Vinyasa’ means to flow or link purposefully. This class is a dynamic sequence that combines fluid movement with rhythmic breathing for a transformative mind-body workout. Moving with a natural flow, this yoga style enhances vitality and agility while building strength and flexibility. As you flow from pose to pose, your pulse quickens, your mind clears, and your body unwinds.

Yin yoga - “Go to Yin-side”

Yin yoga is a part of the original Hatha yoga tradition. In its modern incarnation, Yin yoga combines the influences of Indian yoga with Chinese Daoist practices and Western science to improve your health on many levels.

With its emphasis on long-held, passive stresses of the deeper connective tissues, Yin yoga mobilizes and strengthens your joints, ligaments, and deep facial networks. Yin is yielding, allowing, and nourishing. Turning from the outer forms of yoga to the inner revolution that yoga can offer: “to go yin-side”, Bernie Clark would say, it is here that the deeper aspects of yoga are revealed. Adding a yin or quieter aspect to your yoga practice can introduce you to the possibility of physical, or emotional, or mental equilibrium by marrying the softer, contemplative modes of being in life to the stronger activities you are so often compelled by.

Elke ist Mitbesitzerin und Mitgründerin des Niyagama House. Retreat Ort

This retreat will be held at Niyagama House in Galle, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has an unbelievable abundance of tropical evergreen nature, beautiful beaches, impressive mountains, marvelous sunsets, and countless waterfalls with crystal-clear water, exotic flora and fauna, and wonderful people with honest smiles, extraordinary helpfulness, and happy mood.

Niyagama House is located nine kilometers inland from the coastal city of Galle and the historic, charming Galle Fort and 25 minutes away from the southern beaches of the Indian ocean. The tea pickers harvest the new tender leaves daily the plantation in Niyagama House and these are collected by the tea factory truck during the evening. In the “tea nursery” the new, small plants are growing. And in the organic garden, a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, and herbs are well looked after.

During this retreat, you will be served tea and fruits before the morning yoga as well as a delicious daily breakfast after each class. You will also enjoy unlimited herbal teas, hot water, ginger water, and one daily fresh king coconut, and one daily fresh extracted power juice. The food in Niyagama House is prepared freshly with most of its ingredients coming from local farmers or their own organic garden.

There are always plenty of vegetarian options next to fresh fish, seafood, and chicken. They do not serve alcohol, but you can bring your own and enjoy it wherever you want to. You may also enjoy other meal services in fancy restaurants at Galle Fort for an additional cost.

Niyagama House offers menu options for many dietary preferences, from delicious salads and raw food preparations to fresh juices. Please just let them know and they will try to create some tasty solutions. A cooking class where you will learn how to prepare a typical Sri Lankan rice and curry is also available for you to attend at an additional cost in this retreat.

Birds and butterflies watching

Grab binoculars and look out for all the tropical beauties in the area. Sri Lanka is a birdwatcher’s delight and a butterfly lover’s paradise.

Coconut and cooking class

Learn how to prepare fresh coconut milk; one of the basic elements in every curry. They will show you how to prepare delicious curry with ingredients that you also find in your supermarket at home.

Guided bike tours

One of the team members will take you on a wonderful, gentle, or sportive bike ride. Paddy fields, rural villages, temples, and beautiful tropical nature are waiting for you. From Niyagama House to Wijaya Beach, the van picks up your bikes and the guide, while you enjoy the ocean and a lunch or dinner. Afterward, the tuk-tuk driver will pick you up.

Guided trekking tours

Enjoy the unspoiled nature around Niyagama House. On small paths, you will be walking through plantations, alongside small rivers, big stone boulders, and huge old trees, while your guide shows you the way.

Having spa treatments

Enjoy the plenty of free time to experience spa treatments such as aloe vera sunset wrap, body and scrub massage, Gotukola and yoghurt wrap, brown sugar and warm white coconut oil scrub, head and body lotion massage, head and body massage, head and face reflexology, head and shoulder massage, head, face, and body scrub massage, herbal scrub for sensitive skin, natural facials, salt and lemon oil skin polish scrub, and sandalwood and turmeric honey wrap.

Kite flying and carom playing

Create your own kite and let it fly, or learn the board game “carom”. These are two very typical Sri Lankan hobbies.

Local places to visit

You may visit Galle Fort for some history, shopping, and sightseeing, the Kottawa Rainforest Reservation for a first class birdwatching, the Ambalangoda Mask Museum to discover the richness of Sri Lankan mask tradition, the Unawatuna beach for swimming and snorkeling, the turtle sanctuary in Habaraduwa to marvel at five of the seven worldwide existing turtles, and the Yatagalla temple, which is a 1200 years old place with huge stone boulders and colorful temple paintings.

You may also enjoy a visit to the Rhummasala peace pagoda for breathtaking views to Galle Fort, a tour to the moonstone mine to see how stones go from the digging in the mud to a precious stone, a guided paddle tour along a beautiful water nature trail, a visit to the Hindu temple in Galle to observe a ceremony every Friday afternoon, and a visit to the Handunugoda tea factory to try their unique white tea and take a look at the different steps of tea processing.

You can also visit the Brief Garden and Lunu Ganga in Bentota, which are tropical gardens with an interesting story, the Udawalawe National Park; one of the best places to see wild elephants in Sri Lanka, the Sinharaja rainforest; a UNESCO world heritage site, take a marvelous guided trekking tour that leads to a waterfall where you can swim in the lake below, and visit Ella to climb on the "Small Adam's Peak" and enjoy the nature in the southern hill country of Sri Lanka.

You also should have a visit to Kataragama which is one of the holiest places for Buddhist and Hindus or visit Yala National Park known as the home to the greatest variety of Sri Lanka's wildlife.

Tea picking and tea tasting

Find out, what “two leaves and a bud” really means and pluck some leaves like a professional tea picker. Niyagama House offers a wide range of Ceylon teas. Try them all at once in a special tea tasting or one by one each afternoon on the veranda.
