Certifications

Upon completion of this yoga teacher training, students are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT®). Registration with Yoga Alliance provides a globally recognized credential.

Overview

The main objective of the courses is to allow you to develop a self-practice both spiritually and physically in each of the areas listed below. The modules are categorized into five areas including practice, anatomy, yoga philosophy, yogic lifestyle, and teaching methodology and practice. As you develop your spiritual and physical practice, teaching methodology then assists you to teach what you yourself are practicing.

Kranti Yoga firmly believes that being a strong practitioner in each of these will give you the grounding and foundations to becoming a successful and confident yoga teacher. Kranti Yoga's 200 and 500-hour yoga teacher training courses cover each of these at a level that is appropriate to the ability of your cohort, both individually and as a group.

Practice

  • Asanas (postures): You will learn all postures from the Primary Series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. This will include the Sanskrit names, alignment, and anatomy of each asana.
  • Adjustment: Learn how to adjust these asanas and understand how the adjustment can deepen your practice.
  • Pranayama (breathing techniques): These are based on traditional yogic breathing techniques which will benefit your yoga practice as you learn how to lengthen your breath.
  • Kriyas (cleansing techniques): These will purify the nervous system and allow your breath to flow freely throughout the body. In expelling toxins from the body, you, therefore, cleanse it.
  • Yogic mudras (energy seals): Stimulate different parts of the body by sealing in the energy. These are usually used in pranayama.
  • Meditation: You will cover a range of meditation techniques that will help build concentration and focus in your daily practice. Techniques include Om chanting, chakra, full moon, and candlelight meditation.
  • Mantras (chanting): A range of mantras will be taught including the Gayatri mantra and many more. Find your inner harmony in these sessions.

Anatomy

  • Alignment / anatomy class: This class will go through each asana from the primary series in detail. You will learn about the skeletal, muscular, and respiratory systems in relation to yoga and your own practice.
  • Hip opening, back bending, and jump back workshops: These workshops look at the anatomical technicalities of these fundamental areas of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga.

Yoga philosophy

  • Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras: Study this important text based on the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga. Discover the theory and foundations of yoga as Patanjali describes how to make a connection with the body, mind, and spirit.
  • Yoga in Gita: Listen to a talk by Hare Krishna that guides you through the Bhagavad Gita, India’s most beloved text.
  • The history of yoga: Look at how yoga has evolved throughout the ages from as far back as 1500 BC. Learn about the different schools of yoga and how Ashtanga yoga was developed in the city of Mysore.

Yogic lifestyle and basic Ayurveda introduction

This will allow you to determine your Ayurvedic constitution (body type) including vata, pitta or kapha. Vata is air, pitta is fire, and kapha is earth. This will allow you to improve your diet in accordance with your body type. This, in turn, will help you understand how your body works.

Teaching methodology and practice

  • Class observation: You will observe an Ashtanga-based flow class given by one of Kranti Yoga's experienced yoga teachers as inspiration for the class that you will then prepare.
  • Teaching methodology: This class will give you the necessary building blocks to devise your own yoga class. Learn how to motivate your students by teaching inclusively to the range of abilities that you may be faced with.
  • Peer teaching: These sessions allow you to practice your teaching skills and get constructive feedback from both your senior teachers and your peers on your progress.
  • Ashtanga flow class: Teach this in your final week to your peers.
  • Adjustment: Learn how to help your students get deeper into a posture through adjustment.

Notes: To qualify for the yoga teacher training course, trainees must attend the required number of hours (200 / 300). If you have to miss a class due to unavoidable reasons, Kranti Yoga will do the best to make sure that these hours are made up. There are always yoga classes scheduled at the weekend should a student need to make up any hours of practice. Attendance is important and Kranti Yoga does monitor it closely.

200-hour Ashtanga Vinyasa flow course

The course is designed to initiate students onto the path of yoga and prepare them to teach others. It is a rewarding way to develop an Ashtanga Vinyasa flow yoga practice, awaken your inner teacher and gain an internationally recognized teaching certification. The course is a stepping stone to becoming a yoga teaching professional and the training itself gives all participants a solid foundation in Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Kranti Yoga offers a program that is presented in a fun, relaxed, modern and progressive environment. Students should be prepared to be mentally and physically challenged as classes vary from physically vigorous to softer and more restorative sessions.

Course objectives

  • Develop your own personal practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga including breathing techniques
  • Know about the skeletal and muscular systems
  • Teach an Ashtanga-based flow lesson to your peers
  • Learn and practice pranayama and kriyas
  • Study Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and know how to incorporate into your daily practice

Criteria

This course is for you, if:

  • You’ve done quite a bit of yoga and have a basic understanding of what Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga is.
  • You are looking to become a yoga teacher.
  • You want to train in the beautiful surroundings of Patnem Beach, taking advantage of what Goan beaches have to offer in your free time.

Personal asana practice

The program offers a strong foundation in Ashtanga Vinyasa flow yoga, concentrating on the correct alignment of the postures of the primary series. Your course will start with Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga led classes. Your senior teacher will guide you through the full primary series, with modifications, while the assistant teachers support you in ensuring the correct alignment of the asanas.

By the end of your second week, you will be ready to start practicing by yourself in the primary series Mysore style classes. Here, the teacher will no longer lead you through the class. You will complete the series, together with your peers, at your own pace and in your own time. Your senior teacher will then check your alignment, help you deepen the posture and, if appropriate, adjust you in the posture. Self-practice is a great way for your teachers to personalize your development.

Technical workshops in the afternoons (during the week) will focus on the key areas including hip opening, jump back, transitions and back bending. These workshops are particularly rewarding in terms of measuring the visible progress that you make and are a reminder that yoga can be fun and interactive. This is a great contrast to the self-discipline and focus of your self-practice Mysore morning sessions.

Pranayama (breathing techniques)

From your first day, you will be encouraged to bring awareness to your breath. In Ashtanga Vinyasa flow yoga, the breath initiates the movement from posture to posture. It is impossible to progress through the series without the familiarity of the rhythm of your own breath, improving your focus. You will learn pranayama techniques that will help you to lengthen your breath, increase your lung capacity and strengthen the nervous system.

This is an important aspect of yoga that is often overlooked as physical practice takes precedence. Pranayama is a great way to alleviate stress and tension, something that is often endured in modern society. Pranayama practice will allow you to build mental and emotional strength to help you maintain a healthy sense of wellbeing, not just on the yoga teacher training course but in your everyday life. Theory classes will explain the benefits accompanying these breathing techniques enabling you to practice effectively during guided classes.

Kriyas (cleansing)

Cleansing will clear the system and allow the breath to flow freely. You will learn two cleansing techniques on your course including Jala Neti and Tratak. Tutorials are available for any individual that has a particular interest in this area.

Anatomy of alignment classes

These classes will allow you to gain a deeper insight into the series by looking in detail at the body mechanics of each and every posture. A clear understanding of the skeletal and muscular systems is vital in order that you can engage with the postures and what is to be achieved in a posture in terms of its anatomical focus. The aim is that you build on prior knowledge of anatomy whatever level that may be and leave with a greater awareness of your own body.

During these classes, you will also focus on how to modify your own practice in terms of identifying your weaknesses. These may be due to a lack of strength or flexibility in a particular area. Kranti Yoga will help you identify such areas and give you preparation techniques to allow for improvements in your personal practice. This class provides the opportunity for Kanti Yoga to really assist with your practice on a personal level. The class is delivered by one of the senior teachers but supported by several of assistant teachers in order that individual attention is received throughout the class.

Teaching methodology

You will start to teach your peers during the first week of your training. You will instruct each other on a one-to-one basis and progress to devising and delivering your own lesson plan. Each week, Kranti Yoga will provide tools for you to develop your teaching skills, facilitating you to build your own yoga class that you will teach during the final week.

Teaching methodology sessions include opening a class, sequencing, instructions, relaxation techniques, corrections and adjustments, and modifications. The students always find this a particularly memorable experience as the majority will teach for the first time. Participating in each other’s classes and providing constructive feedback to your peers is a great way to learn and supports our ethos that learning is sharing.

Yoga philosophy

Classical yoga philosophy is interwoven throughout the program and you will be introduced to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, allowing you to make your own comparisons of classical and contemporary yoga, posing the question ‘what is yoga?’. These sessions are a great time for philosophical debate and indeed provided a welcome insight into the views of your fellow students. Each yoga class will have an intention with a spiritual message that will allow you to understand how you can incorporate philosophy into practice. Hari Krishna will deliver a talk on yoga in Gita, a beloved Indian text from which many lessons can be learned.

300-hour course

This residential 300-hour teacher training course is a comprehensive program that follows the standards of Yoga Alliance and runs over four weeks along with a distance learning project to complete beforehand. The program is an intensive course that presents a fusion of Indian tradition and contemporary thinking in a fun and progressive environment.

Course objectives

  • Deepen your knowledge of Vinyasa flow and its surrounding philosophies.
  • Know about the lineage of Vinyasa flow and how it has evolved from the traditional practice of Ashtanga yoga.
  • Explore strength and flexibility of both yourself and your students, appreciating how to maintain the body’s natural bio-tensegrity.
  • Understand the role of the myofascial connections throughout the body and their importance in sequencing a Vinyasa flow class.
  • Design a Vinyasa flow class incorporating the technicalities of a peak posture.
  • Learn how to adjust postures with confidence.
  • Gain a contemporary insight into Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and commentaries of his sutras throughout the ages.
  • Know about Ayurveda and how to bring about balance in everyday life.
  • Develop mentoring skills that will facilitate differentiated teaching strategies.

Vinyasa flow for the fascial body

Vinyasa Flow allows the body to move fluidly with continuity as you flow from posture to posture. This theory class will focus on the fascial connections throughout the body, looking at the function of the fascia and dealing with the body in totality. This is the anatomy of the fascia. Students will compare traditional anatomy with contemporary thinking, considering how this applies to the practice of Vinyasa flow.

Studies will include mapping of the superficial front, back and sidelines, the superficial front and back arm lines, and the spiral lines. The module will provide an exploration of strength and flexibility for the fascial body. Students will understand the importance of bio-tensegrity and how to maintain the body's natural tensile structure when preparing a Vinyasa flow class.

An exploration of strength and flexibility

Students will learn how to stretch and strengthen mindfully and with integrity. Techniques will include Yin yoga, PNF and trigger point yoga. For many different reasons, the fascial connections within the body get sticky, bringing about stiffness. This prevents access to postures. Stretching and strengthening techniques can help break down adhesions and promote better hydration of the body. This can have a positive effect on the range of motion and mobility. Students will apply these techniques to teaching Vinyasa flow.

These classes will take place in a workshop format and students will work within the realms of the integrated body, releasing the myofascial lines to deepen access to the more complex postures of Vinyasa flow, including Supta Kurmasana and Marichyasana D. Students will study the superficial front line (for backbends), superficial back line (for forward folds), lateral lines (for deep twists and lotus pose), and back arm lines (for shoulder stability.)

This module will include a review of the skeletal muscular system from the 200-hour yoga teacher training course curriculum and provide the fundamentals to understanding the anatomy of the fascia. Students will review origin, insertion, functionality, and physiology of muscles. This module will look in details at the anatomy of the shoulder and the importance of building shoulder stability to support your yoga practice.

Vinyasa flow teaching methodology

The fundamental aim of this module is to advance your teaching skills, adding depth and technicalities to what you are already teaching. Students will create a dynamic Vinyasa flow class that will achieve a peak posture through stretching and strengthening techniques. Students will also learn how to teach a class on multiple levels so that all students are challenged sufficiently in every class. Assessment of this module will be through peer teaching which will facilitate a sharing of each other’s ideas. The module is linked to the Vinyasa flow classes that will be taught by the lead trainer during morning practice.

Adjustments for Vinyasa flow

Adjustments provide deeper access into postures and allow students to gain insight into new postures. Adjustments need to be managed carefully and with confidence. Different body types will be taken into consideration along with the importance of the student-teacher rapport. Students will practice adjustments as part of the morning practice. They will adjust peers during practice with feedback given during and after the session. Learning adjustments is a hands-on process and so will be closely supervised by the lead trainer.

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga

This class will lead students through the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga as prescribed by Sri K. Patthabi Jois. On selected days, this will form part of the morning practice. Students will learn an abbreviated version of the series in order that they can make the connection between Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga and Vinyasa flow.

This class will allow students to understand how the contemporary style of Vinyasa flow has been derived from this traditional sequence. Students will progress to self-practice Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga where they will guide themselves through the series while the lead trainer corrects postures and gives advice on correct alignment. Students will be encouraged to practice with reference to the anatomy of the fascial body.

Alignment workshops

  • Peer teach a 1.5-hour Vinyasa flow to peers.
  • Pass a written and practical and test on the anatomy of the alignment of the primary series.
  • Demonstrate the correct adjustments of postures.
  • Create myofascial release plans for peers
  • Pass a written test in yoga philosophy
  • Evening activities including moonlight / candlelight / Om meditation, yoga movies, local festivals and Japa yoga.

They are the only yoga teacher training school to have such a location. This means that the students can benefit from their amazing views during practice whether at sunrise or sunset.

Kranti Yoga often takes meditation walks on the beach and full moon meditations at the sea’s edge. Every day, they encourage students to appreciate some quiet beach time after an intense morning practice. It is never too far to go for a lunchtime beach nap or a dip in the sea between classes for a much-needed cooling down. Kranti Yoga believes the location is simply paradise.

It is ideal for those who don't want the action-packed nights out, opting for civilized dinners on the beach, maybe a cocktail or two at sunset. It is a great place for guests to avoid distractions and be truly yogic if that is what you are looking for. Often, a soda on the beach is enough to unwind after a full day of yoga teacher training.

If you are looking for some evening entertainment, you are not far away from the bright lights of Palolem. Here, you will find a later night in terms of a social scene, sometimes a welcome alternative to quietness and early nights of Patnem. Patnem is located in South Goa, 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Margao and 78 kilometers (48 miles) from Panaji, the state's capital. The region's main town, Chaudi (also known as Canacona), is conveniently a couple of minutes away in case you need to go to an ATM or buy supplies.

Patnem and Palolem have many small shops where you can buy local crafts, clothing, and gifts. The main market is in Chaudi on Saturdays. This is a local market selling fruit, vegetables, and local produce. There is a private hospital nearby and a government hospital three kilometers away.
