Iyengar yoga

At Kare Retreat, Iyengar medical yoga is conducted under the supervision of qualified and expert teachers. One-on-one yoga lessons are also conducted for persons ailing from debilitating or painful illnesses and for the very elderly.

Iyengar yoga is meant for all and is a way of life. The use of props, designed by B.K.S. Iyengar Guruji, such as wooden gadgets, belts, ropes helps the practitioner to achieve perfection in any asana. Kare's aim is to teach the guests in such a way that they can carry home what they have learnt and continue their daily practice at home. Regular practice of 'Iyengar yoga' definitely integrates the body, mind and emotions.

Typical daily schedule

  • 06:30 Guests wake up to the chirping of birds to have their herbal teas, served in their respective cottages.
  • 07:00 The first yoga session starts, with sun salutations and standing poses. This session lasts for 2 hours.
  • 09:00 Breakfast. After detailed consultation with doctors, the guests proceed for their respective therapies that aim right from de-stressing to de-rooting the ailment, if any.
  • 13:00 Lunch is served, prepared as per the body constitution of each guest.
  • 15:00 Relaxing and restorative yoga.
  • 16:30 The minor treatment for the day is given, followed by evening tea and snacks. After tea, activities such as walking, trekking, bird watching and familiarizing oneself with other Kare facilities are recommended.
  • 19:00: Dinner. An early night ensures adequate sleep and rest.
  • Roli Rangappa

    Dr. Roli Rangappa was born into a family of Ayurvedic doctors that traditionally treated several Indian royal families of repute. Dr Rangappa dreams of nothing short of spreading Ayurveda throughout the world, especially the magic treatment of Panchkarma. Dr Rangappa holds a BAMS degree from the Bhartiya Vidyapeeth university and has attained post - graduate proficiency in Panchkarma from the Tilak school of Ayurveda.

  • Prakash Kalmadi

    Dr. Prakash Kalmadi, a doctor of western medicine, has practiced medicine for more than 35 years. He experienced the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatment in his own personal life which brought about dramatic transformation in his health. Dr. Kalmadi's belief in Kare philosophy is reflected in his day to day actions, and is a motivating factor for his staff. He is also passionate about Iyengar yoga, not only as a practitioner, but also as a teacher of Iyengar medical yoga in the treatment program at Kare.

  • Ragini Kalmadi

    Looks after the aesthetic interiors of the retreat may it be residential rooms of the guests or the therapy rooms. Being a psychologist she also boosts of the morale of the staff when they get over stressed with work, and also interacts with the guests to make their stay more pleasant. She is also the brain behind the culinary expertise of the retreat.

  • Ratanlal Shah

    Mr. Ratanlal Shah may have a 76-year young body - but has spent a lifetime practicing Iyengar yoga, over 40 years in fact. He is one of the most qualified yoga teachers from the Iyengar institute. He brings with him his rich experience, expertise with total dedication and devotion. He was privileged to learn medical yoga from the Master [Dr.B.K.S Iyengar ] himself and developed into a professional yoga teacher.

  • Rohit Rangappa

    Dr. Rohit holds a B.A.M.S. Degree from Punes Bhartiya Vidyapeeth Deemed university, and is well trained in pulse diagnosis. His family roots lie in the spiritual city of Varanasi, the home of gods. His all - consuming passion to study Ayurveda provided him the opportunities to be trained under great teachers. His expertise in pulse diagnosis or Nadiparikshan astonishes one and all.

  • Sucheta Shirodkar

    Dr. Sucheta is a young, compassionate, and highly professional individual who has graduated from Muniyal Institute of Ayurvedic health science, Mumbai. She has been actively involved in the preparation of herbal oils and other herbal formulations. Dr. Sucheta also manages other specialized treatments like deep tissue massage, hot stone therapy, thai massage and aroma massage at Kare.

  • Bindiaa Singh

    Diet and cooking was Dr. Bindiaa's passion from childhood. Dr. Bindiaa is doctor of Ayurveda who has specialized in Ayurvedic dietetics. She excels in counseling our guests. She helps them appreciate the science behind the healing science of Ayurveda, and is adept at combining modern dietetics and Ayurvedic principles.

Getting around Pune

Metered taxis and auto rickshaws ply the city streets; the latter are the most popular mode of transportation in Pune, as they are economical and fast. Pune Municipal Transport (PMT) buses reach every part of the city and the suburbs from the terminals at Swargate, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune station, Shivaji Nagar station, M G bus stand, Pune Corporation and Saras Baug.

The food at Kare is designed as a healing diet that gladdens the heart and nourishes the body.

According to Charaka and Sushruta, fathers of Ayurvedic medicine and surgery, "the entire world seeks food; it is the life source of all beings; clarity, longevity, intelligence, happiness, contentment, strength and knowledge are all rooted in food".

The body needs different types of nutrients that perform various functions. The body gets these nutrients from the vast variety of foods available according to age, sex, physical activity, physiological conditioning, and one's constitution. Ayurveda recommends food that is "Saatvic" in nature. "Saatvic" food is vegetarian, has a light sweet taste, with mild flavors of spice and is easy to digest. It consists of fruits and vegetables, and mainly focuses on freshly prepared and properly cooked food, consumed at the right time, and in the right quantity. A balanced diet includes all the six tastes - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.

At Kare, the diet is customized as per individual body constitution keeping in mind, the principles of contradictory food combinations (Virudha Aahar), and the order of tastes in the meal. They use only the purest ingredients recommended by Ayurveda - rock sugar / jaggery, rock salt and cow's ghee. The foundation of food prepared at Kare is based on the fundamental principle of Ayurveda.

Kare has an extensive library, indoor games, and an outdoor walking track. Nature lovers can trek up the hill to see the Ganesha temple, and experience the breathtaking view at the top. They can also meet the village inhabitants, who have been living there for centuries. Guests can also have an exhilarating walk to the lake. %There are a Durga temple, Hanuman temple and Shiva temple, on the premises. The spiritually-inclined can join in the Satsang, and Bhajans being held every Thursday and Friday.

Sightseeing trips to view the sunset point and the famous Tamhini temple are organized for guests staying for a week and more.

Arrival by airplane

Pune's Airport (PNQ), at Lohegaon, is 12 kilometers from the city center. Daily flights connect it to Mumbai and Delhi, as well as to other cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Private cabs, auto rickshaws, or city-airport shuttle buses will cover the distance from the airport to the city center.

Arrival by train

Pune is one of the most important rail junctions in the central railways zone of Indian Railways. Regular frequent bus services are connecting Pune with Mumbai, nearly a distance of 200 kilometers.

Most people travelling to Pune from Mumbai, Nasik or Aurangabad, prefer to do so by road, as the distance between Mumbai and Pune is 170 kilometers, Nashik to Pune 209 kilometers, and Aurangabad to Pune is 230 kilometers. The roads are well maintained, with conveniently located motels and service stations en-route.
