There are limited beds at the ashram, so book early to secure your spot (and get the best rate). The rooms are private singles and doubles as well as four-bed bamboo dorms. There are hammocks and communal areas available to all.

Please note that we are located in a tropical traditional Mayan village in the Third World, which also means that occasional inconveniences cannot be completely avoided, but it is generally as safe here as back home, we've been here for five years already. We are also blessed to have not many mosquitos at all and there are no dangerous diseases, insects or other animals around.

This training is for those who would like to teach yoga from spiritual experience, going into their own depths, becoming confident, fearless, inspiring in the process. Those who feel an urgent desire to explore the truth of existence by studying and practicing a wide range of knowledge & techniques from ancient wisdom traditions passed down to us through the ages by highly evolved beings for the benefit of all.

Many other yoga teacher training courses offer quicker programs (over three or even two weeks) with less actual contact hours in the classroom, requiring students to complete many hours by themselves to reach the hours required for certification. We encourage you to count the contact hours offered in any YTT.

This course exceeds 200 contact hours, ensuring that you will be adequately prepared to guide future students confidently and successfully. Each course includes a special module covering a particular topic more deeply: Sept: Tantra, Nov: Bhakti Yoga, Jan: Permaculture

  • Arjuna Dharma Das

Arjuna has been studying and practicing eastern spiritual traditions in India, Thailand, and Europe for over 15 years. He started his path and deep soul journey in his early twenties when he discovered Theravada Buddhism and Vipassana meditation along with Sivananda yoga. Apart from practicing Hatha yoga and meditation, he is a fiery bhakta, immersed in devotional songs and chants most of the time. He aspires to bring awareness and love into every breath. From the heart, he would like to offer his deepest gratitude to all his beloved teachers across the world.

  • Arpita Devi

Since her childhood, Arpita lived in the reality of complete wonderment of the universe and life itself. In her late teenage years, she started a formal practice of yoga as a student in the Satyananda tradition, which inspired her with its traditional approach to the ancient science and wisdom of yoga. Through Jnana yoga (union through wisdom) and Bhakti yoga (union through devotion), she finds truth in all and aspires to empathically share it with those who know how to listen.

Mahadevi Ashram is a lush jungly garden overlooking incredible crater lake Atitlan. It is located in the traditional Mayan village of Tzununa, just outside of San Marcos La Laguna, the 'yoga capital of Central America'. The ashram features quality-built bamboo structures including two yoga halls, several cute cabins with dorms and private rooms, the main lounge and kitchen building, a wood-fired steam room right next to a lovely and clear mountain creek with dipping pools. All you need to be Home - and then quite some.

The Ashram kitchen provides three vegalicious meals on all course days. Tropical fruits, local ingredients, avocados and vegetables from the ashram garden, wholesome recipes supportive for spiritual practice. Students 'write home about it' all the time.

Mahadevi Ashram encourages focusing on the training while it goes on, there are however 1.5 days per week available to go explore the area. We recommend doing more exploration before or after the training as there are tons of amazing experiences to be had here: Mayan pyramids, traditional villages & markets, kayaking, scuba diving, standup-paddleboarding, zip-lining, paragliding, beautiful colonial towns, a hot water fall, caves and the unique geological phenomenon of Semuc Champey. You could easily spend three months in Guatemala without getting bored or breaking the bank.

There is a wood-fired, stone-built steam room (sauna) on site.

"Kaivalya Yoga School was a 9/10 (200 RYS) Yoga Teacher Training. All of the bases of yogic philosophy were hit on, starting with the required and recommended reading, and finishing with the final discourse; all the while, culminating with a high-quality asana practice. To accompany the learning was an exceptional cuisine and some ancillary entertainment which made the experience completely grand and helped, even when people weren't feeling well due to health issues."

"I have a deep love for Mahadevi - I visited here, almost accidentally, and have since kept going back. For kirtan (devotional mantra singing), for my 200-hour YTT, and volunteering two months as a karma yogi. A testament to the loving, nurturing, intentional space Arjuna and Arpita have created. Allowing us to go deeper knowing we are among family. The 200-hour YTT follows a very traditional curriculum, grounding your understanding of Hatha yoga in the ancient principles often neglected by other schools. A fully immersive program, we were given the opportunity to experience a silent retreat, OSHO tantric meditation exercises, as well as a devotional mantra - alongside the traditional yoga techniques. I absolutely loved this approach. Providing teachers with the appropriate foundations and knowledge of the roots of this ancient philosophy can only make better teachers...and humans! Arjuna and Arpita are loving guides, sharing their experience, home, and humor with you. Such wise and wonderful souls, it was wanting to spend more time with them that I decided to stay an additional two months after my YTT. Daily routine would begin with heart-based meditation and yoga. Breakfast, lovingly prepared by one of the karma yogis (there is a rota, which includes a day off and time off in the afternoons) followed by a few hours devoted to the tasks and responsibilities we wanted to participate in. All meals are shared together, are delicious, and all vegetarian/vegan. The evenings would be spent in the community, usually singing mantra - but once a week we had a movie night, and even ecstatic dance nights :) The ashram is nestled in its own little tropical jungle. A volcanic crater lake is a backdrop, epic lightning, and star gazing to be expected. I love how alive everything is here. The facilities are quite a few notches up from 'basic'. However, I understand everyone's idea of basic is different. A hot shower (with good pressure) comfortable beds, good food, and carefully planned common areas, means you are always comfortable. It is a wonderful rustic refuge in the jungle. Enjoy. "

"I view Mahadevi Ashram as my home away from home, even though I only really spent about four months total there. I first visited in the summer of 2015 for my classical Hatha Yoga Teachers Training and was humbly welcomed by Arpita and Arjuna to their beautiful new land in Tzununa. The yoga taught here was unlike yoga I was used to back home, it was authentic and true to the discipline. Ever since the first day, I felt like I had walked into a sacred community space. The ashram is not a 5-star hotel, it is better, the energy and the vibes here are insurmountable. I loved the community of karma yogis, the San Marcos community, and the ashram pets Bhakti and Priya. The accommodations are simple and rustic which is the intention of the space, it is not of luxury, it is about sustainability and living with the land. The weekly cacao and kirtan gatherings changed my life, I have fallen in love with kirtan and can't get enough of it now! I made many lifelong friends while living at the ashram which I am so grateful for! I loved visiting and living here and would go back in a heartbeat! Thank you for everything Arpita and Arjuna, I love you."

"I spent six weeks living here at the Mahadevi Ashram in Tzununa, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala from April to June 2016. I was living as a karma yogi (selfless service in a full work-trade position) devoting most of my time to the kitchen and preparing two of the three delicious vegetarian or vegan meals six days a week. Accommodation at the ashram was perfect for me. I was provided with a private room with electrical outlets, a single bed and side desk, and Wi-Fi access. There are many shared bathrooms on site and a solar heated hot water rain shower. Other accommodations are dorm style with a maximum of four people per room. These rooms are in a separate building that are of natural building materials and remind me of little fairy houses or something out of a movie like Lord of the Rings. It is not a 5-star resort but after spending time in India, it is more than other ashrams provide and made very comfortable. A typical day when I was staying at Mahadevi looked like this: every morning we started our day with an hour of heart based, silent meditation which then lead into an hour of yoga (when there were other teachers living on site). Next, we shared breakfast together, went into work flow, had lunch, a little break, more work flow, devotional chanting for 45 minutes, and then dinner with free time afterwards. At first, I didn't have much experience with kirtan and devotional chanting and found it frustrating as I didn't know the words and pronunciation as it is in Sanskrit. But after a few days, I found myself repeating the mantras and fully enveloped in the practice. They say that chanting is one of the easiest forms of meditation and I do concur as when I was focussed on repeating the mantras everything else melted away. And when my mind would start to wander, I would mess up and that would bring me back to focus as I am singing out loud and want to stay in harmony with the others. I also found it to be quite good for my self esteem and for using my voice. At first, I was a bit shy about singing or chanting out loud but this went away as you are not the only one singing so its not like the spotlight is on you. Because the day is quite structured, I also found it very easy to focus on the task at hand. One may experience that the worries of the outside world melt away because you are in such a safe, loving environment. They certainly did for me. The food. I had the pleasure of spending most my time in the kitchen. All the food provided is vegetarian (no meat, fish, eggs, mushrooms, onion or garlic). Guatemala has the benefit of being able to grow both tropical fruits as well as vegetables that we are accustomed to in the west (cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, green beans, etc.). Rice and beans are a strong reality in these parts of the world but they are made more fun with a plethora of spices which were available to be used for group meals. Also, if one needed personal items, they were allowed to purchase eggs, cheese and yogurt from the local community. If one absolutely needs meat in their diet, they can go out to eat at a restaurant in their free time. The ashram used to be located in San Marcos La Laguna next to a busier road but has since relocated to their own private property in Tzununa, located next to cute freshwater river (which is wonderful for cooling off in on hotter days). It is much quieter than their old location as the traditional Mayan village of Tzununa is much smaller, with much less tourists visiting compared to the craziness that is San Marcos La Laguna. You may hear church music on Sundays and the occasional loudspeaker of a passing by truck selling fruits, veggies or other goods but all in all, it is a quiet, peaceful sanctuary located in a beautiful, green valley. The village of Tzununa doesn't have as much to offer to tourists in comparison to the other towns around the lake but there are a few places to eat/buy basic food supplies and there is boat service as well as tuk-tuks available to hire to take you wherever you need to go. All in all, I have nothing but fond memories of my time spent at Mahadevi Ashram. I made some amazing forever friends there and I now consider Arjuna and Arpita as part of my family. I look forward to returning in the near future to continue my practice in a space which provides me the perfect opportunity to explore my spirituality."

"I feel as though I have a lot to say about this place so please bear with me. From the moment I arrived at Kaivalya and I was greeted by Arpita's warm smile I knew this was a place of love and light. I studied level one-month long intensive yoga course here from January to February 2015. My yoga knowledge was half a dozen Bikram classes attended before this. I knew nothing of the style they taught or the course outlines. A month on, I feel like my yoga has progressed levels far beyond my own expectations. I now have a daily practice and routine I can follow confidently on my own. I was made to realize my yoga practice extends far beyond my rubber mat too.The way the course is taught helps you understand the full aspects of yoga and how it can be implemented through all aspects of life. If you wear pink outlined 199 USD Lorna Jane Yoga Pants with the matching top, just want a toned six pack, or only want to be able to do a perfect headstand for your Facebook profile pic, then this might get lost on you. Yoga isn't just a way to get flexible and fit. The course is taught from a traditional yoga view. The asanas are all given in their Hindi names, chanting of mantras is a daily practice, they focus on meditation just as much as the yoga, and the daily discourses cover as much as one can possibly learn in a month about the origins, history, and limbs of yoga. All of this was new to me. As for the facilities, everything is perfect. You are overlooking the most beautiful lake in the world (according to myself and Mr. Huxley), and the San Marcos community is equally delightful and filled with many other warriors of light. It is also very reasonably priced. If you want to practice meditation and yoga in "quiet and perfect" surroundings, you will have to pay for it and you will struggle to replicate those conditions when you return home. I found that once I was able to focus on blocking off the external distractions, I had a better knowledge on how to block off the far more distracting noises than a noisy tuk-tuk; the internal dialogue of a busy mind. I would recommend this course to everyone. Arjuna is a humble, fantastic, and incredibly knowledgeable teacher. Joe (the karma yogi), is well on his way to becoming a great teacher too. Arpita's meditation classes are straight from the heart. Together along with the Kaivalya's community (Salumatu, Paul, Roxy, Nelly, and all the others) make for a beautiful place to learn yoga and more about yourself. It was an unforgettable experience. I hope to return one day, but if I don't, I will continue to share with those around me the love that they filled my heart with. Lokah Samastha Sukhino Bhanvantu."

"I had an amazing experience at Kaivalya. The accommodations are simple, functional, and comfortable. As a long-term traveler, I appreciate places where I can settle in and feel "at home" rather than feeling like a guest. The facilities reflect the reality of living in Guatemala - barking dogs, loud music, lush greenery, and an intimate family vibe. I found all of these things to enhance my experience. Learning to tune out the distractions strengthened my meditation practice, and I felt supported by the community of students and teachers. I wouldn't recommend this place for a luxury yoga retreat. The focus is on spiritual practice and self-exploration. I connected deeply to the sincerity and authenticity of the yoga being taught here. I came to the month-long course without big expectations, but my experience was nothing short of transformative. The meditations and classes are structured so that both beginners and advanced students benefit from the teachings. This place seems to have a bit of magic surrounding it. "It was definitely different than any yoga I had ever done before as it focused much more on the spiritual being than the physical. I was amazed that with daily meditation and practice during the one-month course, how many changes I found occurring within my mind. My heart felt more open every day allowing me to let go of a lot of past hurts and begin to open up to finding forgiveness. As an artist, I also found a spark of creativity so large that the hardest part about meditation was trying to quiet all of the new ideas that were suddenly coming to mind. As a couple, we also participated in the Tantric yoga workshop and found great benefit from it. We left that day feeling closer to one another than ever and with great tips on how to sustain our already loving relationship."

"Kayvalia is a great place to practice yoga and meditation and I am so grateful for everything I learned during my one-month course. Sojourning through Central America with a good friend of mine, everyone on our path was recommending us to head to San Marcos. We couldn't ignore all those San Marcos messages coming our way so we decided to go and spend what was going to be two weeks around lake Atitlan. I have been looking a bit online beforehand to see where I could go to practice Yoga and fell on the Kayvalia Yoga Ashram page. I couldn't get hold of them so I and Veronique showed up to the school on a Monday just before Kirtan. I will always remember Arjuna's face when he saw us arriving with our enormous backpacks saying that the Ashram was full but that we were welcome to go in the backyard tent and to join for Kirtan in a couple minutes. And that's what we did. Kirtan simply changed my life and I was convinced right this day that I was going to attempt the one month course at this place. For me, it was a life-changing experience and I am so grateful for everything I was taught. It is exactly the kind of teaching I was seeking. I am actually manifesting everything that I can so I can save enough money to attempt the yoga teacher training next March."

"Spending the last six weeks at Kaivalya has been the single most transformative experience of my life, and I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for the warm and vibrant community that makes it far more than just a yoga school. I've been lucky enough to have been able to travel extensively through central America and southeast Asia or India, and have participated in a number of spiritual courses along the way. I can honestly say that Kaivalya distinguishes itself from everything I've experienced beforehand, and I could not speak more highly of it. From the stunning views of lake Atitlan and its volcanoes, to the superb teachings and deeply transformative practices, to the delicious and festive meals that I was able to collaborate with other attendees in the making of, staying at Kaivalya brings a state of serenity and depth that lends itself beautifully to the cultivation of stillness and meditative silence, the flourishing of creativity and authentic expression, and the strengthening of heart-centered living and loving relationships. "After traveling for a long period of time, Kaivalya was just what we needed. Our room was secluded from the rest of the hostel and had a beautiful view. The kitchen was small but had everything we needed. It was never too crowded either as not too many people stay there at a time so it was a great place to cook and enjoy some really healthy meals. The only real negative we found was the bed wasn't very comfortable. We are kind of picky when it comes to that though as one of us struggles with back problems. The environment and lovely people helped make up for it, though. We had decided to travel to find what we were truly passionate about and one of those things that revealed itself to me along the road was the love I have for yoga. When we found this affordable one-month course I was thrilled and it quickly became the thing I was looking forward to most on our trip. It was definitely different than any yoga I had ever done before as it focused much more on the spiritual being than the physical. I was amazed that with daily meditation and practice during the one month course, how many changes I found occurring within my mind. My heart felt more open every day, allowing me to let go of a lot of past hurts and begin to open up to finding forgiveness. As an artist, I also found a spark of creativity so large that the hardest part about meditation, was trying to quiet all of the new ideas that were suddenly coming to mind. As a couple, we also participated in the Tantric yoga workshop and found great benefit from it. We left that day feeling closer to one another than ever and with great tips on how to sustain our already loving relationship."

"Our time at Kaivalya was a life changing experience and we know that we will return someday soon. We can honestly say that it helped point us in the direction of where we can truly find our bliss in life."

"I participated in the 30-day Hridaya yoga course at Kaivalya in December. I had practiced other types of yoga before, but never Hridaya. I learned much more about yoga than I had at studios back home which mostly focus on asanas. Here we learned about the eight limbs of yoga, the chakras associated with specific asanas and had a daily meditation practice. This style of yoga is not for people who are interested in fast moving work-out style yoga classes. Arjuna and Arpita are inspiring people who truly live the lifestyle that they teach. I really enjoyed the yoga course and four-day silent meditation retreat."

"My intention was to stay for one week to relax, unwind, and reconnect after three months on the road. However, the universe had other plans in store for me! I ended up staying for the one-month intensive retreat, and in doing so deepened my meditation and yoga practice. First and foremost, my experience was enhanced by Arjuna and Arpita's ability to convey, these ancient spiritual teachings with such clarity and wisdom. They are both such a wonderful example of oneness, their love, and devotion to help others develop is so tangible and all encompassing. I could not have asked for better teachers and welcoming hosts. Thank you for making my stay so magical and memorable."

"We had a wonderful time at Kaivalya Yoga School in December 2013. Arpita and Arjuna are lovely hosts and good teachers. We took the one-month yoga intensive course and enjoyed it a lot. We both found this is a great value and would highly recommend this course for people, such as ourselves, looking to cultivate awareness in the teachings of yoga. It's not your average fitness-yoga stuff though we found our flexibility and strength have both increased. Besides that, it is set in a beautiful little garden space and has a nice, well-equipped kitchen. The upstairs rooms have nice views and some more privacy. They also offer very reasonable monthly rates."
