Perched on a ridge at the head of a valley in the Umkomaas river system in KwaZulu-Natal, the Buddhist Retreat Centre looks out on a vista of indigenous valleys, forests, and rolling hills receding like waves in the blue distance. Here, for more than twenty years people of all religions have come to experience peace and tranquillity. It is a gentle, sympathetic space where one can be still and get in touch with oneself and reflect on the things that crowd one's life.

CNN featured the retreat as one of the ten finest meditation centers in the world. Paths threading the 300-acre property each bring their own revelation: follow the pine-scented path to the dam, walk past ancient cycads to the tracks of early Voortrekker wagons, discover an assegai-sharpening stone on a hillside, or point your feet towards the rocky outcrop that provides a perfect seat for contemplating the valley below.

Nearby are the breeding sites of the exquisite, but rare Blue Swallow of which the Endangered Wildlife Trust has appointed the BRC a custodian. Their presence, together with the BRC's commitment to encouraging the indigenous biodiversity of the area, has led to the Centre being declared a Natural Heritage Site by former President Nelson Mandela. The BRC is a birder's paradise, with more than 160 species recorded.

Integrated into this setting are the Centre's buildings, accommodation lodges and cottages, the dining room and office, a shop, a lecture and art studio, a library, and the meditation hall. The labyrinth, the Zen gardens, the deer park, and the Buddha Boma invite one in for reflection and contemplation.

    Yasmin is a mindfulness coach and somatic movement therapist with a fascination for the body and mind connection. It led to her creating a simple movement therapy called bodysensing. Easier than yoga or Pilates, bodysensing influences the nervous system through movement to reduce stress, relieve pain, and restore well-being.

This five-day cleanse retreat will take place Ixopo, South Africa, in the nurturing space of the Buddhist Retreat Centre overlooking the lush green hills of the Midlands. Driving directions from Durban

  • Take the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg.
  • Take the off ramp at Exit 61: (Umlaas Road/R56).
  • Turn right at the bottom of the ramp (don’t follow directions to Umlaas Road) and travel towards the R56.
  • At the end of that road, at the T- junction, turn left into R56 which takes you past Richmond and towards Ixopo.
  • Five kilometers before Ixopo, there are two signs (on the left) that warn you that a turn-off to Benmore Lodge and Buddhist Retreat lies ahead.
  • A little further another sign (on the left) says Buddhist Retreat. Turn right into D64.
  • After seven kilometers, past the Chibini village, you will find the BRC entrance sign on your right.

Driving directions from Gauteng

  • Traveling on the N3, skirting Pietermaritzburg, watch out for the turnoff that takes you to the R56 and follow the R56 signs which take you past Richmond and towards Ixopo.
  • From there, follow the directions given for those traveling from Durban. If you miss the R56 turn-off at Pietermaritzburg, carry on towards Durban on the N3 and turn off at Exit 61 (Umlaas Road/R56).
  • From there, follow the directions given for those traveling from Durban.

Driving directions from Pietermaritzburg

  • Coming from Pietermaritzburg, just before the D64 turn off, one passes the Mariathal Mission close to the road, on the left.
  • Please ensure that you arrive before dark. Arrivals are encouraged between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on retreat days.

Driving directions from the South Coast

  • At Park Rynie, turn off the N2, heading inland on the R612 to Umzinto/Ixopo.
  • At the junction with the R56, turn right towards Richmond/Pietermaritzburg.
  • After five kilometers, turn left onto D64 at a sign that says: Buddhist Retreat.
  • After seven kilometers, you will find the BRC entrance sign on your right.

    "I was diagnosed with Sjorgen’s syndrome in March 2014, an autoimmune condition that reduces saliva and fluid production in the body. It left me with a dry mouth, swollen glands, dry skin, heartburn and a body that ached all over, like the flu. I was told that it is incurable and only manageable with medication. I was not happy with the prognosis and decided to find an alternative. I heard about Yasmin and Nic and how they help people with autoimmune conditions like Arthritis and Fybromyaliga. I started off with a 14 day programme and noticed a change in my symptoms in a few days. I went on an Alkalizing diet and mindfulness practice to help my body heal. After 14 days, the ache had subsided and my symptoms had improved significantly. I have continued with the programme and see them once a week. I know I can’t be cured but I believe this is the best way to manage it without medication and expensive supplements"

    "I attended Nic and Yasmin’s 3 day retreat at the Buddhist retreat centre in KZN. Although the centre has a structure it’s flexible enough to have some “me” and although the food is vegetarian it is delicious and does not eliminate dairy, sugar or wheat, so I could still have their home baked bread. I have a very stressful job and needed something a little more than a weekend away to de-stress. The activities included mindfulness yoga, meditation and educational talks, all hosted by Nic and Yasmin. Yasmin’s Mindfulness sessions were like nothing I had attended before. I have been attending regular meditation classes but these sessions were really simple and got me into a centered state quickly. I didn’t think I would but I attended all the activities and left feeling better. "
