Canopy tour at Hacienda Bar National Wildlife Refuge

This tour imitates the flight of the chestnut-mandible toucan, as it leaps off a branch, swoops down through the forest, and then up in to another tree. On this tour, eight separate cable rides take you from one ridge top to another, across valleys and streams. There are 14 land-based platforms and 1 tree platform with a view of the coast.

Canyoning tour

Take the five minutes walk from the base camp to the top of the canyon where youll receive thorough safety instructions before starting your adventure. When you reach the first waterfall, which is 5 meters, you'll then be taught the fundamentals and proper techniques of rappelling. Then you are on your way with five more waterfalls to go.

The largest of the falls is 25 meters. The canyon ends at the Uvita River where there are some pristine swimming holes to relax and reflect. Then the Canyon cruzer will pick you up and take you back to the base camp.

Horseback riding to Nauyaca Waterfall

This horseback tour is over a 12 kilometer route with three resting periods. You'll depart from the paved road and arrive about an hour later at Don Lulo's house, where you will have a delicious typical Costa Rican breakfast. After breakfast and observing animals in the family's mini-zoo, the ride continues on for 25 minutes until you arrive at the waterfalls. You may swim in the beautiful natural pools the waterfalls have formed.

On the way back, you'll stop once again at Don Lulo's house to enjoy a delicious typical Costa Rican lunch. After a well-earned rest on the hammocks and a delicious cup of coffee, you'll begin the return trip back to the starting point.

Kayaking in the mangroves

Explore one of the most important mangroves of Central America located on the Terraba-Sierpe River. Discover the beauty of its canals and enjoy the great variety of flora and fauna. You'll also have the opportunity to find six different types of mangrove trees and learn the importance of their ecosystem.

Ocean kayaking

Paddle along the coast of Costa Ballena and have the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery and unique natural formations that make its beaches out of the ordinary. You'll also have the chance to enjoy the lush green surroundings and rock formations in shape of arches.

You'll also stop at Playa Ventanas (Windows Beach) for some snacks and kayak surfing. Ventanas is surrounded by tunnels in the cliffs that look like impressive windows in the surrounding landscape, hence the beach's name.

Snorkel tour to Cao Island

Isla del Cao has been a protected reserve since 1976. Its surrounding waters are home to hundreds of different reef fishes. See some manta, devil, eagle, and southern sting rays, turtles, and white tip reef sharks. Certified scuba divers are also allowed to enjoy some diving experiences.

  • Review by Susan from Indiana, USA

"My friend follows Sophia on Instagram. After a few beers one night, she says we should go to this really fabulous resort in Costa Rica. I say, sure why not. Best snap decision I've ever made! Dominical is a TINY hippie village on the ocean. It has one main road, and there are only about 400 residents. Don't let that dissuade you, though. The restaurants are WONDERFUL and the people are top notch. It's an eclectic group of people who are perpetually chill and happy. Danyasa is the gem in Dominical's crown. Every time we told someone we were staying at Danyasa, their eyes got big and they commented on what a nice place it was. I concur a million times over. Danyasa is hard to explain, only because I've never experienced anything like it. The rooms, though just shipping containers, are comfortable and clean. The AC kept us comfortable, and the outdoor shower was awesome. We didn't use the shared kitchen, but it had everything you would need to prepare a meal for yourself and store the leftovers. The yoga studio is stunning, and the boutique exceeded my expectations - which led me to exceed my budget ;) The people who work there couldn't be any cooler or nicer, and we enjoyed spending time with them. Here are a few things you might like to know: There are no hotels directly on the beach. The town just isn't set up that way. But Danyasa is about as close as you can get, which is a 5 min walk. If you are coming from the states, don't worry about bringing a converter. The outlets are like ours, and there are even USB charging ports in the outlets :) If you are surfing (which I insist you do!), bring a rash guard. Buy Picaridin bug spray. The mosquitos aren't bad - I only got two bites in 5 days - but I saw some people pretty eaten up. My travel doc recommended Picaridin and it worked great for us. You can drink the water at Danyasa. Don't bring a towel to sit on at the beach. For 20 bucks you can buy a beautiful thin blanket from a beach vendor, and it makes a great souvenir. Speaking of beach vendors, there are some really great finds at the beach. Save a little extra room in your luggage to bring home some goodies. We loved every single thing about Danyasa and Dominical. I hope you will, too!"

"Danyasa Eco-Retreat is a stunning getaway in the small beach town of Dominical. The owners Sofiah and Brendan are so warm and welcoming to any and all! The studio offers about 20 yoga-related classes per week. The variety of classes definitely kept my interest... everything from alignment focused classes to dance inspired vinyasa, you'll learn new ways to move and groove in a gorgeous bamboo studio as you listen to the nature outside. They also offer workshops and ceremonies of all types...I took part in a cacao ceremony and an acro-yoga workshop so far. The level of instruction is incredible. The rooms are cozy but nice. AC is offered and you're surrounded by tropical plants and trees of all sorts! OH! I also love the boutique that's attached. Lots of cool clothing and accessories to choose from, that completely fit the vibe of this area. Don't miss this during your visit to Dominical and the surrounding area!"

"I just got back from my vacation. I really enjoyed my stay in Costa Rica and the yoga & surfing retreat in Danyasa! I'm so happy that I discovered this place. I booked my stay for 6 nights and ended up extending my stay. The yoga classes were absolutely amazing, especially the power alignment classes. The surfing lessons were great too. The resort is absolutely beautiful, and the town is just so peaceful.I would definitely do the yoga retreat again. I would definitely recommend this retreat to anyone who wants to go to Costa Rica! It is Pura Vida!" website, edited

"Our time at Danyasa was an incredible and enlightening experience. The people are all fantastic and very welcoming. We stayed 4 nights at Danyasa and did 4 yoga classes. Each class was challenging and inspiring and focused on varying elements of yoga. The accommodations are wonderful, our room was very spacious and was air conditioned. It also had an attached private bathroom which was nice. The common kitchen and bathrooms are kept very clean and really promote a community environment. Brendan and Sofiah are the owners and made an effort to meet us personally and ensure that we were having a wonderful time. I have never left a vacation feeling so elated and am already planning my next trip!" website, edited

"After a festival where I camped for a week, it was a great relief to end up at Danyasa, where I was treated with care and felt pampered at their facilities. I stayed for several nights in the Ganesha Room. The air conditioning and really comfortable bed made it very difficult for me to leave the room. The location is a 5-minute walk to the beach and 30 seconds to any food or store. They also have a really lovely boutique with eccentric clothing as well as yummy yoga clothes from all around the world. I got to participate in some classes that they offer in the open air yoga studio in the sky. If you get a chance to meet the lovely couple that run the place Sofia and Brendon, they are extremely loving and fun people. Even the housekeepers and front desk folks are very helpful and peaceful. One of the yoga instructors carried my luggage to my room, because I was really weak from sickness when I arrived. The retreat is a beautiful sanctuary and I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a super safe refuge in Dominical."

"Serendipity brought me to this little slice of heaven, where I realized that I not only had an amazing environment to work and play in, but the perfect guide / friend / teacher / muse who also came along with it. Sofiah was the ultimate companion - at once an imparter of wisdom, a holder of truths, and a genuinely inspired soul. Just being in her midst felt like a total honor and simultaneously calming. From the morning pre-yoga smoothie on the deck overlooking the lushness of the jungle, to the walk down to the river - each moment with Sofiah was always somehow laced with presence, play, and possibility. For me, as the ultimate freelancer who can work from anywhere, Bamboo Yoga Play was the perfect blend of comfort and sass.I could also walk to the beach and do yoga every single day, and also hanker down in my room to get some work done. The best thing about this little Dominical gem is that it provides a full-spectrum experience that combines all the best things in life: wellness, fun, joyfulness, and love. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for an integrative, holistic, and totally unique experience."

"Exceeded expectations!!! My husband and I were looking forward to a nice vacation at the beach, complete with surfing for him and yoga for me. This is the perfect location and space. Walking distance to the beach and right on the main road in Dominical. I teach yoga in Lander, Wyoming..where it can easily be below freezing when I head to the studio in the morning to teach. The large, second-story Danyasa studio space was just what I needed to re-energize for the rest of winter in Wyoming! Love the bamboo walls and floors, the sounds of the jungle birds, and the openness of it. Ceiling fans were just enough breeze for a soothing savasana at the end. I took 6 classes while we were there with 4 different teachers, and would recommend them all! Great for all levels of students. Sofiah Thom (co-owner/founder/yogini/dancer with husband, Brendan) is SO creative and invites you to fully express yourself through her Bamboo Play Yoga, where personal movement is encouraged and welcome and there is no intimidation. You just move how you want to move. I also loved the air-conditioned Bamboutique (with free wifi!) where I bought my first pair of 'booty' shorts to sweat in during yoga and wore them to half the classes! I love hot yoga that is just naturally HOT! Big thanks to Amanda, one of the managers, for convincing me to get the short shorts.. Por que no? My husband and I are looking forward to going back, possibly even in the next few months! Definitely beats a Wyoming winter! I also look forward to leading a yoga retreat there in the future. There are so many different things to do besides yoga too, such as ziplining, surfing, touring the national parks, stand up paddleboarding, whitewater rafting, etc.! I can't wait! I'm already planning now. Who wants to join me?"

"I spent eight days at Danyasa Eco-Retreat and I have so many positive things to say about it. The host, Nataschia, was absolutely wonderful, accommodating to my every need, reshuffling yoga classes to fit my surf lessons, and even taking me out to dinner one night to one of the town's nicest restaurants for a perfect Costa Rican sunset. A true friendship formed! In addition, the room was perfect, not fancy but clean and comfortable, with a nice little balcony. The retreat has a great kitchen and these wonderful showers that are semi-outdoors (but still very private) which I loved. The beach was less than a five minute walk away, and the town of Dominical is so cute and small that being right in the center meant I got to explore everything really easily, but it was never loud or busy (going in September helps!). The yoga studio was incredible, so peaceful and relaxing, and the classes, which were held everyday, were a great blend of restorative to the more challenging. Even the design of the garden in the retreat is absolutely wonderful, a true secluded paradise. This was such a relaxed and beautiful experience for me and I will definitely be returning."

"I had a fantastic time at Danyasa. Brendan and the staff were wonderful- they made me feel right at home. Life in a shipping container is great. Clean, comfortable, and safe. I was traveling alone and felt 100% secure behind the Danysasa bamboo wall. Coming in from the street felt like you were walking into an oasis. It was a joy to take yoga at Danyasa. Nicole is an incredible teacher. I've never had someone break down the details and alignment of the poses like she did. What I learned from her changed my practice. I would recommend coming for a yoga retreat when they offer one. The vibe, the yoga studio and the town would make it a great experience. I look forward to coming back!"

"We stayed for 5 days and 4 nights at Danyasa's location. We had initially booked for only 3 nights and it was such an enjoyable experience we decided to forgo going back to San Jose and use that time to stay at Danyasa. Their facilities are perfect for a relaxing space in which you can keep to yourselves or also enjoy your fellow travelers company in the outdoor community kitchen and deck area. Everything you'll need is a 5 minute walk, including the beach, multiple food markets, great restaurants/bars, waterfall hikes, and local shops. All the employees were very welcoming and helpful making you feel right at home. They also have a great relationship with a local surf shop if you're looking to get some waves between yoga classes or even get your first lesson. I highly recommend staying here in Playa Dominical and look forward to returning because Brendan and Sofiah (the owners) are making this great home even better everyday!", edited

"I can say that I have not met anyone who embodies their dedication of mastery in their craft quite like Sofiah. Her presence is warm and humble with a subtle ethereal element of grace and innate power. There is something magical about the jungle and ocean in Dominical that is so raw and alive that inspires a remembrance of what life once was without so much distraction in many of our day-to-day lives. Crystal waterfalls and sunny days followed by shooting stars and bioluminescent waves at night make a perfect backdrop for exploring both internal and external worlds equally."

"Amber Campion is an incredibly gifted yoga instructor. Her authentic approach to personal empowerment is profoundly uplifting. Her knowledge of the body is at the level of artistry. She leads the class through deeply healing flows that challenge and renew. I can be in the most horrible of moods, and emerge from her class inspired and feeling powerful. I havent done any coaching with her, but if her coaching is anything like the group mentoring she performs with clarity in her speech and playful humility while she teaches yoga, it must be awesome. Check her out! You will not be disappointed!"
