Students who choose the on-campus living option are housed in comfortable two or three bedroom houses, typically with one roommate and several housemates. Each house has a porch, a common living area, and a furnished kitchen. Each bedroom is equipped with bunk or single beds for a maximum occupancy of two students per room, shelves for clothes and personal items, fans, bedside lamps, and safe.
Bathrooms are shared between two or three students and are equipped with hot water shower, toilet, and sink area with storage. Single room or house upgrades are available dependent on class size. The porches and living areas are commonly used for studying, eating, and relaxing. The kitchen is fully equipped with the appliances and cookware or flatware that you will need. You will find Wi-Fi signal at hotspots around the campus including the classroom, administrative office, and the student lounge, to stay connected and complete homework assignments.
The housekeeping staff cleans and provides fresh linens to each house once a week. The grounds team keeps the gardens lush and handles any housing maintenance concerns. There is a security coverage every night from 17:00 to 07:00 to keep the students and campus safe. The swimming pool has the perfect temperature and is the ideal place to refresh during lunch breaks or after class.
The program focuses on a number of important aspects of yoga.
According to yoga tradition, chakras are energy centers in the body. There are seven key chakras in the body where energy flows. When one of the chakras is out of balance or blocked it triggers emotional, mental, and spiritual unease.
Yoga asanas are used to activate these energy centers and bring the body into balance. In this course, you will explore the 36 asanas through the chakras. You will learn meditation and chanting of each one and explore the corresponding western anatomy. Upon completion, you will be able to compose classes, both group and individual, to assist their students in balancing their body, heart, mind, and soul.
As part of the program, the students will create their own eight-week beginner series based their studies to teach to their future students. The students will be well versed in using the techniques learned that combine the wisdom of the chakras and asana to lead an effective, safe class that assists their students in finding balance in their own lives.
Along with learning the subtle energy anatomy of the chakra system, the students will receive in depth teaching of western anatomy and kinesiology. The students will understand the major muscle groups and common injuries and restrictions in each group. You will be able not only to identify injury but also to work the opposite muscle groups to assist in healing. You will explore the contrasts and similarities of eastern and western anatomy and physiology.
The program includes a strong foundation in alignment, anatomy, yoga philosophy, pranayama, and meditation. Detailed postural analysis techniques and alignment oriented asanas will be the focus of the physical asana along with strict sequencing to ensure the safety of the individual. The students will have the building blocks to continue a lifelong study of yoga and understand how to spread and share that knowledge with clarity and simplicity.
Samantha has studied yoga in the Iyengar and Ayurvedic style for 15 years. She is a E-500 RYT and certified to teach 500 hour yoga teacher trainings and continuing education for yoga teachers. Samantha teaches workshops on yoga and anatomy, alignment and sequencing of yoga, modification for injury, prenatal yoga, and understanding the chakras through asana, chanting, pranayama and meditation.
Peggy is a E-500 RYT and the founder of the Austin Yoga Institute. She began her study of Yoga in the late 60’s in Cambridge, Massachusetts, having since studied with senior yoga teachers in Europe, Canada, and the US. In India, Peggy has studied with B.K.S., Geeta, and Prashant Iyengar, and other Yoga masters. She began teaching yoga in British Columbia over 30 years ago and has taught in Mexico, Europe, and the southwest United States.
The retreat takes place in the charming remote town of Playa Samara, Costa Rica. Playa Samara sits near the edge of the rain forest on the central Pacific coast of the Nicoya peninsula. In addition to Samara’s own nearly undiscovered beach, 12 other secluded beaches can be found within a 15 mile radius. Offshore Isla Chora is accessible by kayak, and the surrounding jungles are home to a variety of animal and plant life, making Samara an outdoor enthusiasts dream.
The school has become an integral part of the community and our campus sits at the heart of it. In just minutes you can walk to the beach, the soccer field, an internet café, many restaurants, and several grocery stores including an organic market. There are two banks, two local pharmacies, and an established, English-speaking doctor.
Samara boasts of an artistic, musical, and holistic-minded community, with its own local galleries, open-mic nights and farmers markets. It is safe to say that this unique little town is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
There are a wide variety of food options in Samara, including artisan breads and homemade jams from the farmer's market. Check out the local fisherman’s catch of the day, or sample a fresh cold coconut on the beach. Enjoy a Costa Rican casado dish at one of the local eateries, or order a pizza to share with friends. Finish your ice cream cone before it melts in the heat. Start your day with a hearty German breakfast and café con leche.
Taste test the ceviche and guacamole and find your favorite local spot for both. Try a veggie burger or smoothie at one of the vegetarian restaurants or maybe order some platanos (fried plantains) while you sit and take in the sunset over the ocean. Samara has a number of restaurants that offer flavorful Costa Rican cuisine. In addition, there are a number of Italian, American, Mexican, vegan, vegetarian, and sushi restaurants.
There are two groceries and an organic market. There are farmer's markets and fruit stands, butchers, and fishmongers. The coffee, of course, is world famous and bursting with flavor. No matter your pallet preference, Samara has a food option for you.
