Mei Shapiro

Mei is the founder of Come Back to Yourself Retreats. She's Canadian, fluent in English and French, and her passions include travelling, nature, different cultures and places. Mei a certified diving instructor and she loves to share her passion of the underwater realm with others. She's also a yoga and meditation instructor.

Yoga has taught her how to live a meaningful life, guided from within, and her gentle style of teaching focuses on deep inner awareness in the Yoga poses, Pranayama and meditation, all with the goal of taking you to that place where you can just be yourself and be aware of the things you love, things you're passionate about, that make you smile, connecting to your body sensations, your deep soul desires, embracing silence, connecting to your inner child - creating, moving, laughing, and flowing with whatever life brings, and all these things are what she wants to share with you.

As your retreat facilitator, Mei's goal is to stimulate and bring to light the very best potential in you with a combination of mindful living, relaxation, physical activities, movement, and having fun.

A hallmark of Come Back To Yourself Retreats is going beyond pure cerebral integration by anchoring new experiences in the body, helping you find simple ways that work for you. Mei believes that everyone is capable of making these changes in their lives, and it always starts with the little things - sometimes they are right under your nose where you just cant see them! So, rather than teaching traditional yoga & meditation, Mei will guide you to appreciate the sacred within the simple things in life. Let her show you simple practical ways to slow down, balance, reflect, smile, enjoy, embody, and go home a fuller happier version of yourself, more aware of being perfect as you already are!

Mei also loves playing music, yoga, being underwater, wild dancing, painting, long walks on the beach, peaceful tea breaks, silent moments, and magical sunsets.

Bali, the island of the Gods, is a lush tropical island paradise blissed with rainforests, volcanoes, rivers, waterfalls and miles of amazing coastlines, traditional dance, elegant temples, emerald-green rice terraces, beautiful people, mystical traditions, and a vibrant artistic culture. Artsy and cultural activities in Ubud

There are numerous art galleries in Ubud, the two best being Neka and ARMA. On Sunday mornings ARMA is also the venue for childrens traditional dancing classes, a delight to watch.

Most nights of the week there are dance performances in the various temples in Ubud. The tourist office on the corner of Jalan Raya and Monkey Forest Road has details, and there are often ticket sellers in the streets. The tourist office will also have a notice about any major ceremonies in the neighborhood, especially cremations. Do go to see one if you get the chance. You will not be intruding as they are very public occasions.

Cycling tours and fun activities

Make a point of exploring some of the little side roads in Ubud; they are charming. The cycling tours are great fun: they take you up to Kintamani and you cycle back down on little roads. You can also try jewelry making, drumming / gamelan classes, dance classes (traditional, belly and, occasionally, salsa or tango), horse riding, or cooking. Water sports and sea-based activities are available, with excellent diving, snorkeling, and surfing.

Get a car and a driver

Car and bike rentals are relatively inexpensive, depending on the car and the length of hire.

Bali is a beautiful island and touring around is a delight. It is recommended to hire a car and driver rather than cope with sight-seeing and unpredictable traffic. A great option for a day trip include the royal baths at Tirtaganga and the lovely rice terrace scenery, via Klunkgung with its palace and little museum, Besakih temple, Kintamani, Munduk, and Amed.

Visit Pejeng Village

On the other side of Ubud, the village of Pejeng is home of a temple with the famous drum known as the Moon of Pejeng. From there, its short drive to Goa Gajah, the elephant cave from the first kingdom of Bedulu, where you can enter the cave to view the Statue of Ganesha.

Visit the elephant safari park

Visit the elephant safari park at Taro Village, 40 minutes away from Villa Bodhi. Ubud and its well-known cultural attractions is just 20 minutes south of the Village of Tiyingan, where you can find many local attractions, cultural performances and many shops and restaurants.

White water rafting

For the sporty types, practice white water rafting in Sobek on the Ayung River, located 10 minutes from the villa. About 90 minutes away is Kintamani, with a famous lake and mount Batur. Further south there is also the excellent Bali Bird Park, about 30 minutes from the Villa on the road to Denpasar.

Enjoy three divine body treatments with highly trained massage therapists: Ayurvedic, Balinese, and foot reflexology.

"I'm trying to sum up what it is I like so much about Mei: I think its a combination of her directness, humour, lightheartedness and common sense. Somehow she is so extremely human, and yet so fun! I know her as someone who feels deeply, goes her own way and tries everything for herself. Professionally she is clear and trustworthy. In fact she is one of the most loyal people I know. Fierce caring is a rare find these days - hang out with Mei whilst you get the chance. Be warned - you are very likely to enjoy yourself and come away feeling better."

"Mei: an alive human being, who shines, glitters and vibrates without any pretenses - her mere presence affects you. Everything seems clear, free of judgement and reassuring around her. There are some people who when you first meet them, you know your paths will cross again. Even though kilometers may separate us, we come together again. There are many people like Mei but meeting them requires your passion, curiosity, joy, aliveness and presence. This is also what you taught me. Thank you Mei"

"Mei, in the ancient language of Tamizh means truth. And that is who she really is, a truthful person and an honest friend. It is truth that awakens the intelligence. It's truth that kindles the spirit. It's truth that empowers the body. It's truth that explores deeper values. It's truth that gives the courage to delve and stand the test of time. It's truth that soothes the heart. It's truth that hums inside us. It's truth that enlightens the mind. It's truth that spreads inner peace. And it's truth what listens to us, patiently, empathetically and unbiased. To come back to yourself you need to tread the path of inner truth. And Mei is rightfully the apt person who can embody the truth and guide in the journey. Come immerse in the vast ocean of your inner peace with Mei (truth) guiding you all the way."
