Retreat location

Var is one of the most important touristic departments in France and has many assets, an exceptional environment, rich cultural heritage, and a beautiful climate.

It covers 300 kilometers of coast by the Mediterranean Sea, white sandy beaches, a preserved landscape, protected islands and famous locations renowned worldwide. It looks exactly as you see in postcards, with fields of lavender, medieval villages and chateaux, colorful markets where you can find local products and exotic spices, lively villages with a slow way of life where the landscape and the quality of the light are remarkable.

Sampling the wines of Provence youll discover a piece of history that started when the Greeks founded Marseille, bringing the vines with them, and tasting the typical Provencal dishes you explore the different styles of Mediterranean cuisine. For those who like to venture off the beaten path, to stay in this area of Provencal vineyards and olive trees is an exceptional experience.

Things to do (optional)

A day trip to fancy St. Tropez

Take a day trip to explore St. Tropez. On the road you can visit la Garde Freinet, a medieval fortified settlement and now a typical charming Provencal village full of craft shops and small restaurants, Grimaud, a medieval village dominated by the ruins of a Chateau, and Saint-Tropez, a beautiful town with pastel colours known not only for celebrities and parties but also for sporting events such as the historical regatta sailboats Voiles de St Tropez.

Beaches and water sports

Explore the beaches between Hyeres and Le Lavandou. Estagnol and Pellegrin have white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters shaded by pine trees. The beaches have plenty of parking but can also be accessed on foot, through the coastal path, or the ancient path of the customs officers. For water sports, the beach of Saint-Clair is frequented by wind surfers, the Fossette is a meeting point for canoeing and kayaking, and the club nautique at Cavaliere and the naturist beach at Layet are other options. You can end the day with a visit to the medieval village of Bormes les Mimosas, listed among the most beautiful sites in France.

History, culture, and architecture

Visit the Abbey of Thoronet, a masterpiece of Romanesque Provencal style. Open daily, including Sunday to attend a service with Gregorian chanting. On the way back, visit Sillans la Cascade with its Chateau of the 18th century, and the waterfalls with a spectacular pond of clear turquoise water surrounded by rocks and lush vegetation. Don't miss Cotignac, a bustling village with houses of the 16th and 17th century, fountains, typical french bar-restaurants, art shops and one of the liveliest markets of Provence.
