Ayurveda is a thousand-year-old medicine originating from India whose traditions differ according to the region of origin (North India or South India). From the point of view of this medicine, diseases result from the imbalance of humoral forces (doshas) that are Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapa (earth). The imbalance itself results from an accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body. Your health therefore depends on your natural ability to eliminate these toxins. However, this ability can be disrupted by bad lifestyle habits, poor nutrition, stress or simply age. The toxins (ama) accumulate and disrupt the internal balance. The balance of the body is reflected in the balance of the doshas.
The accumulation of toxins can result as much from a poor digestion of food as a poor digestion of your experiences and emotions. Ayurvedic medicine aims to restore a balance of body and mind. Ayurveda recommends detoxifying the body with each change of season.
Panchakarma is an individualized ayurvedic treatment with fasting or a light diet specifically aimed at detoxifying the body. Depending on the condition of the patient, the season, the type of treatment adopted by the doctor, the cure can last from a few days to several months. The term panchakarma combines two Sanskrit words pancha (five) and karma (action). Traditional treatment consists of five therapeutic actions to flush out the toxins:
The application of these five measures is not systematic.
Before applying the purge proper panchakarma, a preparatory phase (purvakarma) consists of draining toxins (ama) embedded in the cells before being able to evacuate them. Oral herbs (powder or decoction) mixed with ghee (clarified butter) are given orally. Herbs stimulate the fire of digestion (agni) and liquefy toxic metabolites. Ghee has the property of draining toxins out of cells to the stomach or intestines.
This first phase can last from 3 to 7 days depending on the condition of the person. This phase lasts 4 days. Every morning, you eat fasting herbal preparation and ghee (clarified butter).
Day 5 is a day of rest without treatment, while on days 6 and 7, you will receive a therapeutic massage (abhyanga) with medicinal oils in order to raise the toxins. The massage is followed by a sweatana which helps to liquefy the toxins and to drain them towards the intestines.
On the eighth day, you ingest a purgative potion and spend the morning to evacuate. It is a gentle purge and without irritation.
If you wish, after the Panchakarma you can receive revitalizing massages or one (or more) shirodhara. This treatment consists of flowing a thin stream of warm oil continuously on the patient's forehead. It aims to calm nervous disorders and is renowned for providing a deep sense of well-being
