The Chirrip Mountains (3 nights)

'Kubla Khan' - Chirrip Mountain Retreat (max 4 guests)

Ideal for a family vacation or a small retreat with a close group of friends (4 adults max occupancy). Kubla Khan is a private residence where you can totally disconnect from the stress of the 'outside world'. An enclosed, gated property located right on the Chirrip River with beautiful grounds, tilapia pond, orchard and vegetable gardens.

5 minute walk to the very quiet village of 'Canaan' where you can buy some groceries, fresh milk and cheese and free-range chicken and eggs. Venture a little further up the road and find the trout farm and the organic chocolate factory. The house is an open planned 'loft' style post and beam structure, nestled into the river-side surrounded by bamboo plants and jungle vegetation, breathtaking views of the river below, and dense jungle on the other side, where you can see monkeys swinging through the canopy.

Follow the trail through the garden and past the pond, down to the river where you can take a dip in the cool water and then lie out on the enormous hot boulders to warm up and take in the sun. You may even want to take a fishing rod down with you and try to catch yourself a trout or two for lunch.

The house has one master bedroom with king size bed, a second bedroom with a double bed, plus one pull out double mattress and a sofa bed. The kitchen is the focal point of the house with a sociable layout inviting guests to sit around the dining/prep table and watch the meals being prepared. The bathroom has a sunken stone and river rock shower tub with an amazing view out the large glass window into the tropical orchid garden and waterfalls.

The large open balcony is a great place to have morning coffee and watch the sun appear from behind the mountain peaks, or to spend the rainy afternoons and watch the clouds roll down the valley and across the rainforest creating an incredible, surreal backdrop that changes every second.

'Rio Chirrip' - Mountain Lodge and Yoga Retreat (min 4 guests)

Rio is a 'colonial' style hotel with stunning views of mountain peaks, rolling pastures, running rivers, winding valleys and virgin rainforest. The adobe structures with ceramic tiles are combined with bamboo frames and nestled amongst immaculately manicured flowerbeds and organic vegetable gardens. It also has a full size heated swimming pool with sun deck and a hot tub that is ideal for stargazing in the cool evenings. The cozy, spacious rooms all have en-suite bathrooms and private balconies overlooking the valley below.

The main Rancho has a large communal area with built in sofas, rocking chairs and an open fireplace for the cool nights. The kitchen is attached to the 'Rancho' with an open-air dining room that floods with sunlight in the morning for breakfast. It has breathtaking views that change throughout the day, as the mist and the clouds appear from behind the mountain peaks, only to disappear again in the evening, to reveal clear skies and bright stars, possibly to the sound of coyotes in the distance.

The yoga studio, fully equipped with mats, blocks and straps, is an enclosed temple like structure with huge side windows, high vaulted ceiling and a fireplace to create the desired environment for your yoga practice.

The Osa Peninsula (5 nights)

'Casa Mil Flores' - Jungle & Beach House (max 4 guests)

A beautiful private residence located alongside the Carbonera River and just 100 yards from the beach. Ideal for a family or small group of friends, Casa Mil Flores offers the perfect setting to enjoy nature first hand, whilst in the comfort of a beautiful modern 2-story house with all the amenities that you require in making your stay as pleasant as possible.

En-suite master bedroom upstairs with king size bed, plus an extra double pullout bed and a single 'day bed'. Private balcony with stunning sunset views over the hills and towards the Corcovado National Park. This provides the perfect yoga deck for your early morning or afternoon practice.

Downstairs has a second bedroom with a queen size bed. There is a second full bathroom with hot water shower, a fully equipped modern kitchen with breakfast bar that leads out to the dining terrace and manicured gardens abundant with tropical flowers and fruit trees. The lounge is cosy with fitted poured cement couches and plenty of cushions.

'Casa Arenosa' - Deluxe Beachfront Property (4-6 guests)

Location, location, location! Casa Arenosa is a beachfront property that is situated on one of the Osa's most beautiful beaches. Take a 50 yards stroll along the garden trail and through the manzanilla trees and arrive at Backwash Bay. 'Backwash' is not only a perfect swimming beach, but also one of the areas most popular surf breaks. The house has a spacious master bedroom upstairs with king size bed and an extra pull out double, and en suite bathroom. Downstairs there are two more bedrooms with double beds and a shared second bathroom.

The modern kitchen has a center island that acts as a prep station and socialising area. There is breakfast bar attached to the side of the kitchen, a barbecue area and a separate dining table just off to the side. There is a decent sized fresh water plunge pool, hammocks and beach loungers as well as comfortable living space.

'Tumbo' - Jungle Lodge & Yoga Retreat (minimum 10 guests)

'Tumbo' is situated amongst primary rainforest and a stone's throw from the beautiful 'Pan Dulce' (sweet bread) beach and offers a pleasant twist on jungle living. The main 'rancho' has a cozy modern feel with living, cooking, dining, entertaining, lounging area downstairs and spacious manicured gardens with private patio and dipping pool attached.

Upstairs comfortably sleeps 10 people in 3 partitioned rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Meanwhile, there are a separate 'creek-side' bungalows that both sleeps another 4 people, with en-suite bathroom. The yoga deck is located across the creek and nestled inside a little jungle clearing with monkeys and scarlet macaws above in the canopy and the sound of the ocean beyond the trees. It is fully equipped with mats, blocks and sound system and has its own bathroom.

The perfect surf and swimming beach is located right in front of the accommodation, where beginners can take lessons on more forgiving waves, and boards can also be rented. Experienced surfers can find more challenging breaks such as Pan Dulce, Backwash and Matapalo within walking distance.

'Boca' - Yoga and Surf Retreat (min 4 guests)

'Boca' is situated just a 30 minute ride from Puerto Jimenez just before you get to Matapalo, on a beautiful semi private beach on a large open property that has spacious grounds and offers fantastic yoga and spa facilities as well as having its own surf school right out front.

Accommodations range from a mixture of deluxe family style palm thatched beach bungalows with en-suite bathrooms to single occupancy palm thatched yurt tent platforms with private shower and washbasin facilities but shared bathrooms. Each of the structures is constructed using native hardwoods, bamboo and palm leaves and even incorporate driftwood and old surfboards into the designs to create architectural masterpieces. The main 'Casa Grande' has a large communal dining space and open kitchen, with chill out sofa area and wireless Internet facility (upstairs only).

The beachfront yoga deck is a piece of art in itself, once again a bamboo and hardwood structure with palm roof. It is spacious and complete with blocks, mats, straps and tennis balls! There is also a communal full size swimming pool with spa, boutique and bodywork facilities.

The private surf break right in front of the accommodation is run by experienced surfer and instructor Axel, whose 64 physique and deep voice will make you feel completely safe in the water, enticing you into any wave that comes your way! This friendly break is enjoyable for all levels of surfer, with a flat clay bottom and long rolling waves. If you don't feel like getting wet, then just sit back and relax on the huge 'surf-bench' to watch your colleagues on the waves, with incredible views across the gulf towards Panama.

Explore two worlds within the one trip. Feel the balance and diversity between the moderate climate, tranquility and healing energy of the Chirrip Mountain and the Chirripo River, followed by the intensity and inspiring majesty of the Osa Rainforest and the Golfo Dulce.

Stay overnight in the capital San Jos, then travel the next morning by private transfer over the continental divide, and arrive in the mountains just in time for lunch. The Chirrip Mountain is the highest peak in Costa Rica at 3800 meters (12,500 feet). It is located in the valley that forms part of the Chirripo National Park.

This will then be followed, after a few days, by another scenic drive cross country towards the pacific coast, around the Golfo Dulce, and on to the Osa Peninsula for the second part of your adventure. Experience the overwhelming natural beauty of the tropical jungle and the exotic, uncrowded beaches of the Osa Peninsula, at the most southern tip of Costa Rica, where virgin rainforest and the Corcovado National Park meets the Pacific Ocean.

Depart from the Osa totally rested, balanced and grounded after a week of intense relaxation, restoration and rejuvenation. Fly the length of the country back to San Jose on an 18 seater plane, where you will connect with your international flight and reconnect with your former life, having been touched by something very special and positively magical!

Discover local attractions like the hot springs, botanical gardens, coffee and cacao plantations, waterfalls, Cloudbridge Reserve, The Chirrip and Corcovado National Parks, a wildlife sanctuary, reptile park and much more.

Your private chef will prepare vegetarian and vegan meals daily, using the freshest locally sourced ingredients. Fruit juices, smoothies and iced teas are available throughout the day, as well as locally grown coffee and a selection of black, green and herbal teas.

An early breakfast offers house made granola and yoghurt, fresh fruit, juices, tea and coffee.

Brunch is one of our main meals of the day and can range from the typical Pinto con Huevos (eggs with rice and beans), handmade tortillas and Mexican style burritos to pancakes with pineapple chutney, fresh banana walnut bread and mango coconut muffins to a more traditional American bagel with scrambled eggs and oven baked tomatoes.

Lunch is light with a soup, fresh salads, rice and beans and home baked breads.

Dinner offers a 3 course meal that starts with the Chefs soup of the day followed by an eclectic range of international vegetarian and vegan dishes, complimented by delicious home made puddings and desserts.

Canopy Tours: Glide through the jungle canopy from tree to tree harnessed onto a zip line and take in the rainforest from a higher perspective.

Dolphin Boat Tours: Set off early in the morning to find dolphins or possibly whale sharks in the Golfo Dulce. Enjoy some snorkeling and swimming before taking a trip down the estuary of the Rio Esquinas deep into the mangroves to search for tree boas, american crocodiles and numerous exotic birds.

Hiking: As well as the countless trails and local hikes in the vicinity of the hotel, with a little prior organisation, we can arrange a guided climb to the summit of the Chirrip, the highest mountain peak in Costa Rica at almost 12,500ft. Stay overnight at the base camp and then make your way the following morning to the summit, before descending the same day and arriving back at the hotel in time for dinner.

Horseback Riding: Ride a western saddle across the pastures, down jungle trails and along the beach accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide.

Kayaking Tours: Take a guided tour inside the river mouth and through the mangroves or just cruise around in the open 'Golfo Dulce'.

River and Nature Hikes: Stroll into the virgin rainforest towards the source of the river, encountering a variety of the diverse fauna and flora native to the area, as well as bathing in the beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes.

Surfing: Enjoy the relatively uncrowded waves of the Osa Peninsula, ideal for beginner to advanced surfers. Lessons or board rental available at the surf school.

Tree Climbing: Scale harnessed up a giant Strangler Fig (Matapalo) 65 ft up to a platform and then hurl yourself off into the canopy as you are lowered back gently to the ground.

Waterfall Repelling: Climb up the face of a 100ft flowing waterfall and then rappel down it to the pool below.

"The Beach Bliss yoga retreat hosted by Tania and Angus was in a word - fantastic! Boca Sombrero was a perfect spot and it was wonderful to look out over the ocean during practice on the yoga deck. The accommodations were very comfortable and I loved hearing the waves crashing on the beach every morning when we woke up. Angus is an excellent chef and the food was delicious. There was great variety during the week as well as fantastic coffee and desserts!Tania did a wonderful job coordinating the group's activities for the week from spa appointments to massages to surf lessons. The group of people on the trip were absolutely great. I'd happily vacation with any of them again in a second. :) Last, but not least, Jo was a wonderful teacher. I can't wait to go back again next year and would highly recommend any of Chirriposa's retreats!"

"I am booked to do my second Chirriposa retreat in June because my first retreat was the best 10 days of my life! I felt pampered, well-fed and constantly entertained and amused. I met amazing people from all over the world and we had great laughs and conversations over amazing meals, all incredibly fresh and prepared with love by Angus. Tania was a perfect host and provided us with anything we desired, whether it was a quiet place to relax, a jungle adventure or spa treatments. The yoga classes were long, luxurious and too-notch. Everything is taken care of for you! I loved Costa Rica for it's lush jungle, beautiful warm water and the locals! I recommend this trip to anyone and everyone!"

"If you are working more than 65 hours a week and need to pamper your soul, this is the special the place you were looking for. Costa Rica's nature is amazing, wild, breathtaking, it' s nature at it's purest. Peninsula de Osa retreat chosen by Tanja and Angus blew my mind away. They are both the most amazing hosts, a great team, have all details covered for the most demandingones, arranging surfing at 5 am ( yeas will will die to ge up even earlier not to miss one wave nore the sun raising over the ocean) , dolphin watching or river up climbing going through magic waterfalls and ponds and when back Angus will have prepared almost from nothing many many vegan fantastic top notch dishes, one better than other ( and am a furiouscarnivorous ad didnt miss it at all)"

"yoga twice a day, reading, sleeping, or just dousing in your bed listening to the waives breaking meters away was haeven.Absolutely every minute we sat in the plane from Frankfurt to Newark to San Jose and 7 hs time difference. A week there was too short, if you can drive from San Jose to the retreat so you get a better flavor of this amazing laid back safe clean friendly Costa Rica. It was my first trio to Costa Rica and meet the Chirriposa retreat, look forward to the mountain version. Thank you Tania and Angus! A Pura Vida, live your life and reward yourself!"

"I went on a beach yoga retreat with Chirriposa in February 2015, and it was one of my favorite vacations ever. Tania and Angus treated us like old friends from the moment we arrived - so warm and concerned about our enjoyment. Their love and deep knowledge of Costa Rica was clear. They brought us to a lovely site, and introduced us to some fantastic local options for all kinds of activities, massage and spa, run by talented and creative people - Tania worked hard to organize our schedules so in between yoga classes, we could enjoy unique experiences such as horse-back riding in the mountains, jumping out of a towering 800-yr old tree and then finishing up with a calming massage. Yoga by the beach absolutely rededicated me to my practice, with the inspiring Joanne Flaherty from Down Under Yoga joining us from Boston. Angus then cooked us healthy, creative and mouthwatering meals, which we ate till we were bursting! All in all, it was an incredible experience, and I can't wait to go on another Chirriposa adventure!"

The retreat took place in a naturally beautiful part of Cost Rica conducive to meditation and yoga practice. Angus' cooking will amaze you time and time again. The flavors, the freshness, the innovative quality of the meals are part of the highlight of this retreat. Treat yourself to a Chirriposa retreat!"

The dream team of Angus and Tania made sure everything was taken care of, from comfortable accommodations to delicious, healthy food to activities and outings. There was lots of yoga, surfing, a river hike, all kinds of tropical wildlife and plenty of time to relax and rejuvenate. And did I mention the food? Too good! I could not have asked for anything more. Thanks, Tania and Angus!"

"I cannot say enough good things about my experience at the Chirriposa Beach Bliss Yoga retreat at the Boca Sombrero location. It was quite simply life changing! Tania and Angus were absolutely wonderful hosts and made us all feel like family. Angus is an absolute genius in the kitchen - you could taste his incredible passion for food and cooking in every dish he made!During the retreat you could keep busy with activities or just relax, unwind and enjoy nature. In addition, to the fabulous yoga classes with our teacher Jojo Flaherty (she's is such an amazing person) we had so many great choices of activities including: surfing, hiking, tree climbing, horseback riding etc. There were also wonderful options for massages and spa treatments."

"I recommend the Thai massage by Maria - she gives an absolutely amazing massage - wow! I was truly sad to leaving at the end of the retreat and I don't think I have ever felt that way about any other vacation I have ever been on. The Chirriposa team provided an experience in life that should not be missed. I hope to go back for another adventure with them sometime soon."

"I and my fellow yogis had an amazing time at Chirriposa Beach resort. Tanya and Angus are such gracious hosts, the staff were are great and location is fabulous, in the wilds of the jungle whilst being just by the beach edge and amazing surf. It was a great place to get away from the snowy Boston winter and I was immediately transported to another land to be woken by howler monkeys and to watch the sun rise every day.Angus created beautiful food to feed the soul, made with delicious local ingredients. Beautiful yoga with Jo Flahety from Down Under Yoga gave purpose to the day, yet left enough time to explore the wilderness and get a bit wild, throwing caution to the wind by jumping out of a tree into the jungle canopy 60 ft above ground, swimming in a green luscious waterfall and Salsa dancing with the locals on Friday night."

"This trip will stay with me for a long time, and Ill take with me the friendships made, your warmth and easiness and the natural beauty of Costa Rica. Thank you both SO much for making this trip so special. Ill definitely be seeing you again."

    "Ci vediamo!"

"I can't say enough about this trip! It was a fabulous experience, everything I wanted and more! Tanya and Angus were the perfect hosts and went out of their way to ensure everyone had everything they needed and had a great time. The food was incredible, I am seriously considering becoming a vegetarian after this trip, everything they served was nothing short of delicious! Everyone was warm and friendly and by the end of the holiday I honestly felt like family. If you are traveling alone, rest assured, you'll meet some great people in a safe, fun, exiting and relaxing environment. Costa Rica is a little piece of heaven on earth and experiencing it under the guidance of Tanya and Angus made it a truly magical experience. If you are looking for an action packed adventure, from surfing, tree climbing, hikes in the rain forest and a great yoga practice everyday, along with great meals good company and a gorgeous sunrise, I would highly recommend this retreat! I will most definitely join Tanya and Angus on another retreat in the future, perhaps Italy in the fall! Thanks for the wonderful experience and I'm looking forward to seeing you again sometime in the future my friends!"

"Along with the rest of group that were lucky enough to get a place on this retreat, I can't thank Angus and Tania enough for the unlimited effort they put in to make this such a special week. We all left with a heavy heart but knew we had experienced one of the best weeks and have already discussed the possibility of doing it all again together! The location for the beach bliss retreat on the Osa peninsular was perfect. It felt very private with plenty of space for all. Great accommodation options and a spacious communal lodge for us to gather and eat, drink and chat. The yoga platform was set back just a few yards from the beach and surf. We could clearly hear the waves along with the abundant wildlife as we practiced our forms!Angus and Tania gave us plenty of choice for 'experiences' during the week. They include river nature walks, horse trek, boat excursion with dolphin watching and snorkeling....and of course amazing massage therapy on tap! I guarantee also that you will struggle to find better healthy cooked and prepared food anywhere. Angus delivered day after day with most delicious dishes, amazing job! Finally, don't worry if you are not so good with your camera (which is a must by the way!), Tania is a super photographer and will help you capture the magic of your retreat! :)"

Angus is super talented in the kitchen. His food feeds your sole, melts in your mouth. Tania made sure everyones needs were met and was so organized with our activity schedules. They took time out to show us the beautiful beaches of the Osa making sure we didn't miss a thing!"

"The two locations (Chirripo and the Osa) were very beautiful and complementary. Chirripo is in the mountains and cooler. The Osa was much warmer, more isolated and near the beach. Both had many great reasons to visit. The food was delicious and plentiful. The staff and organizers were very friendly and accomodating. Transportation was easy and the activities were well-organized and easy to sign up for (and fun!).I felt so much healthier at the end of my two weeks with Chirriposa than when I first arrived. I would love to go back!"

"Ive known and worked with Angus and Tania (Chirriposa) for almost 10 years. Tania has an appealingly eclectic background - from the European electronic music scene to a full fledged jungle local. They both have a deep knowledge and love of Costa Rica, as well as a general passion for life and impeccable taste. They will be your ultimate mountain / beach hosts, and I can guarantee that you will never feel like you are part of a tourist brigade (in fact they may have you passing as a local by day 5). I cant wait to step off the plane in San Jose and head for the hills (and then the waves) for my first Chirriposa escapade."

"I have had the good fortune of working alongside Angus for the past 6 years as a yoga retreat presenter in Costa Rica, and he quite literally makes the retreat experience every time! His humor and good nature make all the retreat-goers feel at ease and welcome, and that doesnt even begin to describe the meals. The careful preparation, attention to quality ingredients, the wild beauty of the food he summons out of the jungles of Costa Rica - you literally feel like you are eating the environment! A full palette of flavors and colors, dishes from all the worlds great cuisines, beautiful presentation - this is the thing everyone always raves about at the end. He is always quick to make a joke from the kitchen, to walk someone through their specific food sensitivities with grace and kindness, and never fails to entertain and satisfy. Im grateful to have such a friend cooking for and entertaining our groups. Bravo!"
