The accommodation, studio, and eating areas are situated close together around a well maintained garden next to gentle meadows offering stunning, panoramic views, allowing you space between activities and room to wander and reflect. There are two recently renovated log cabins in the woodland area, which offer warm, comfortable, and spacious single-gender accommodation.

Both log cabins are equipped with toilets, showers, and washing areas as well as hot drink making facilities. There are good quality, sturdy single beds, duvets, pillows, linen, and towels provided. Apart from the sensitively managed estate in which guests are free to wander and explore, there are also a private hard surface tennis court and open air pool that you are welcome to use when the weather is feeling kind.

With its open fire, high ceiling, and refreshing artworks, The Stables, a beautifully converted 1930s stable and adjoining property, provides a warm and practical area for eating, chatting, and relaxing. The ground level has an open-plan, well equipped, kitchen, and dining room with under-floor heating. Immediately outside, there is a large, decked, seated eating area which is wonderful on this summer retreat for informal meals and gatherings.

Set a little away from the other buildings, in the corner of a meadow and edged by a hedgerow, The Old Cowshed is a wonderful large, light studio space purposefully restored to make it ideal for lessons and practice. It has a singular ambience; a sense of calm and quiet beauty that encourages study, self-development, and contemplation.

Program

Yoga class

The classes are mixed ability. Chillout Retreats has expert yogis who will be teaching you a combination of Dynamic, Vinyasa flow, and Hatha yoga that work on strengthening the core, increasing flexibility, and strength. Hatha yoga is strong, powerful, and rejuvenating, and covers many of the well known and popular asanas. You will be strengthened, challenged and invigorated during the morning classes.

The evening classes are slower, intuitive, restorative, and calming. Partner work is incorporated to develop some fun, togetherness, and you can expect to work with fluidity, smoothly, and develop a deep sense of body awareness in all of the classes. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced level options will be given during the classes to ensure that everyone is included, capable, and challenged.

Walking

When you walk, you release any tension that you are carrying around in your day to day lives. You can reach places that you can only see on foot and experience some of the most breathtaking places on earth.

On this retreat, Chillout Retreats offers a guided walk during the weekend. The terrain is often hilly, coastal, rugged, and certainly windy at times. They range from mildly to intermediately challenging.

Meditation

By quieting the chattering mind and developing loving kindness, you can really be open to experience what is going on in the present. How much time do you spend thinking about the past or the future without actually living and breathing each precious moment now? After all, you cannot change the past nor predict the future but you can shape your present.

Meditation is now well regarded as a life skill. As you use yoga or Pilates to strengthen and exercise your body, you can use meditation to strengthen and gain control of your brain and mind. After all, it too is a muscle. It is a tool that can help aid concentration, sharpen the senses, and inspire minds. The beauty in even the smallest thing can be appreciated after only a few meditation sessions.

During this chill out retreat, you will learn different meditation techniques and practices that can be used every day, such as the mindfulness of breathing, the Metta Bhavana, and walking meditations. Once you have learnt how to calm the mind, you can meditate anywhere, in the bath, on the tube, or whilst out walking. Even the most active minds need a rest and without too much effort, so much can be achieved.

Natalie Smit-Ash
Natalie Smit-Ash has practiced yoga for over 20 years. She is a Hatha yoga teacher, a qualified holistic therapist, and a Reiki teacher. She has over 14 years of qualification and experience in the field of complementary health. She was born into a family of complementary therapists with her grandfather practicing conventional medicine alongside acupuncture and Reiki with the Native American Indians in North America. Natalie has completed massage training in Thailand, practiced yoga in India, and expanded her knowledge of aromatherapy and reflexology in Australia and China.

Retreat location

The retreat centre is situated overlooking the breathtaking Cuckmere valley in East Sussex. It neighbors the stunning Seven Sisters coastline and the splendid inland peaks of Alfriston (think white horse in the hillside). It gives great pleasure to explore it and enjoy its grandeur scenery, that has inspired the likes of Oscar Wilde, Virginia Wolfe, and the Bloomsbury set no less. If you want to walk the south downs way, then this is a great place to start!

There are lovely coastal walks, cliff top contemplation spots, hiking paths, and breathtaking views just minutes away. As Gayles is situated a mere 10 minutes by car from Seaford, the retreat is easily accessible from the mainline train and motorway routes from London and neighboring Brighton.

All your meals are included in the price. All of the dishes are vegetarian. Chillout Retreats has an onsite food enthusiast, Lucie, who will freshly prepare all breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. She is passionate about food and creates the heartiest dishes that are considerate to body and mind. Wherever possible, fresh and local, supporting the local economy is also high on their agenda. Unlimited fresh fruit and a fine selection of de-caffeinated tea and coffee are available 24 hours a day.
