If you're interested in exploring the expansive Baja coastline or the rugged canyons of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, then there is plenty to delight and amaze you. You can step right off the property and wander the beach in either direction, scramble over the rocky points at both ends, and walk for miles.
You can follow goat trails and arroyos in a variety of directions to trace the shoreline or to climb a nearby hill and get a sweeping vista. You can take a cliff hike near Pescadero or up a canyon in the Sierra for a half-day excursion that will give you a more formal introduction to the Baja landscape.
Your bilingual guide will point out the wide variety of flora and fauna that thrive in the desert and along the coast, and also include interesting information on local geologic and cultural history. So whether you just want to get out and roam on your own along the dunes, past the cacti, and up into the hills or prefer a guided experience with greater detail and the full backstory, there are great options for you here at the tip of the Baja peninsula.
Taking a tour of the local beach and the surrounding hills and bluffs via horseback is a great way to get to know the area and see things from another point of view. This relaxing excursion starts at a small ranch that is a neighbor just down the beach. They will pick you up, introduce you to your horse, and give you a short explanation outlining basic safety.
Your guide will then lead you along the shoreline, over the dunes, and up a hilltop for a vista overlooking the pacific. Sometime in the saddle will give you an overview of our beautiful beach and highlight the stark contrast between the arid desert and the expansive ocean.
The Baja peninsula is a natural wonder. The stark contrast of the arid desert with the deep blue waters of the sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean gives it a unique beauty. You can make the three bay kayaking and snorkel tour on the sea of Cortez side of the peninsula to paddle the coast and dip under the surface to get a glimpse of a variety of fish, urchins, anemones, and more.
After a brief lesson, you will start kayaking from the twin dolphin beach into the beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay of Santa Maria where you will snorkel amongst colorful sea life. You will then paddle on toward the golden sand of Chileno bay to relax on the beach or venture back into the clear blue waters for more snorkeling.
Both bays have reef environments, which makes for an abundance of fish and other sea life, providing excellent snorkeling. During whale season, you may even be lucky enough to spot a few migrating humpback or gray whales.
Paddling the Los Cabos coast by sea kayak will offer you a unique perspective on the beauty of this rugged peninsula. Diving below the surface, you will marvel at the variety and color of the reefs teeming with fish. The two together will give you an appreciation for the many features that make Baja such an enchanting place to explore.
Each summer and fall, endangered olive ridley sea turtles return to the Baja beaches where they were born to dig nests, lay their eggs, and begin the cycle of life all over again. Forty-five days later, those eggs hatch and newborn hatchlings make a mad dash for the sea. These adorable baby turtles, which fit easily in the palm of your hand, will charm you with their tiny features and dogged determination.
You will cheer as they scramble toward the water's edge and one-by-one get carried off by the waves lapping at the shoreline.
From mid-October to early-December, a local preservation group offers the chance to partake in a sea turtle release at sunset at their nearby incubating preserve. This uplifting event will leave you delighted and inspired, encouraged by the prospect that though facing long odds the olive ridley turtles will be making a comeback.
There is a joy in riding a wave that is difficult to describe in words, but it is plain to see when it lights up a surfers face. Eyes wide and sparkling, a grin that can't be erased, and the urge to giggle uncontrollably are all tell-tale signs.
Surfing is one of the most natural ways to sink into the rhythm of the ocean. It is fun and playful, exciting and exhilarating, and for many, it can provide a deeply satisfying spiritual connection with the world around you. Catching and riding a wave will awaken you to the present moment in a way that few activities can match. Whether you are an old pro or just learning, you can find a surf break that will fit your needs.
There are over a dozen different surf spots within a one-hour radius of Prana del Mar, many that pick up swell all year long. From the winter surf on the pacific side to the southern swell that hits both the pacific and sea of Cortez coastlines.
Pairing yoga with surfing is an excellent combination. Tune into the world around you, the undulations of the waves, the rise, and fall of your breath. The ocean provides an inspiring reminder of the beauty, simplicity, and power of nature. Catching a wave helps you synchronize with the oceans rhythm and offers an exhilarating sense of unity with the natural world.
So come blend a yoga retreat with a Baja surf adventure and experience a sense of balance on land and on the sea!
Though Prana del Mar itself is rather remote out at the beach surrounded by the mountains and the desert you can still head off on excursions to some local towns of interest for a bit of exploration.
Todos Santos is a small town to the north that was recently awarded that status of Pueblo Magico (magic village). It is a quaint artist community known for its galleries and relaxed vibe. With a central plaza, a church, several shops, a nice mix of cafes and restaurants, and the famed Hotel California, it's a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon.
San Jose del Cabo is a moderately-sized Mexican town with a colonial past. It is a nice place to stroll the plaza, visit the church, shop along the main boulevard and its adjacent streets, and browse the growing number of local art galleries.
There is also an option to visit flora farms for lunch. Flora is an organic farm with a lovely restaurant located about ten minutes outside of town and almost everything they serve is fresh-picked directly on the premises. This trip has become a guest favorite.
And, of course, there is the notorious Cabo San Lucas. The natural beauty of the area surrounding this tourist-focused town at the tip of the Baja peninsula is undeniable. The distinctive Cabo Arch positioned at Lands End is its signature landmark and worth seeing, along with its resident sea lion colony, if you visit.
The marina is lively, as is the main drag where you will find many bars, restaurants, and several nightclubs. Be forewarned that it is very touristy, but if you are in the right mood, then it may be worth a visit.
Each year, beginning sometime in December and lasting until the end of March, a steady progression of whales choose to winter in Baja warmer waters. During this time, a stroll along the beach will often afford you views of whale spouts, flukes, and perhaps even a full breach. Many a collective gasp has gone up in the yoga studio as the whales offshore put on a show while everyone in the class is staring spellbound out to sea.
For a closer view, you have the opportunity to take a tour from the Cabo marina out past the world-famous Cabo Arch to get a better look at the humpbacks as well as the occasional gray whale. You will head out in a small, agile boat that is great for whale watching because it can quickly dart toward whale spouts spotted in the distance.
The grandeur of these majestic creatures is palpable as they gracefully glide through the deep blue waters transitioning between the sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. For anyone who has not been out on the ocean to witness these beautiful animals in their element, it is an experience that you are not likely to ever forget.
Massages and treatments are included for an extra fee upon request. Ready for some flat water after paddling into wave after wave on your surf safari? A little sore after yesterday’s yoga practice? Does your derrière need a rest after riding horses on the beach? Prana del Mar has just the answer.
Float around for a bit in the swimming pool or just lie back with a cool drink on a chaise lounge on the wet deck. Let the jets of the hot tub soothe away any aches or warm up tight muscles in the sauna of our wellness sanctuary.
Top it off with a therapeutic massage, an energizing aromatherapy treatment, a cleansing body wrap with sea salt scrub, or an invigorating facial. Then back to the pool and start the cycle all over.
Please book your flight to arrive at San Jose del Cabo International Airport (SJD). Transfer from and to the airport is included. The organizer will pick you up from the airport.
