The first National Park in Costa Rica, Cabo Blanco was an absolute reserve until a few years ago when they decided to permit people to enter. A four-hour round trip hike to the beach and back shows you pristine dry tropical rainforest, as well as areas in succession. Go early to see more animals. This tour is available Wednesday to Sunday.

Canopy and zip line tour

Come and journey through the treetops, enjoying the tropical forest while the Pacific Ocean lies below. Professional nature guides will accompany you on the unforgettable journey through the biodiversity of the surrounding environment.

Fishing tour

Whether you are an avid fisherman or a novice, a three-hour tour with local guides in Mal Pas can give you a view of manta rays, green sea turtles, dolphins, migrating whales, and a possibility of catching of yellow fin tuna, grouper, red snapper, mackerel, etc.

  • Pilates, interval training, fitness classes, and personal training sessions are available.

Horseback riding

Allow the horses to be your gentle guides through the mountains, jungle, and beaches. The two-hour tours can leave early in the morning or later in the day for a sunset ride. Different tours are offered, based on the riders level of experience.

Montezuma day trip

There is a beautiful waterfall in this nearby little village, a canopy tour, and a handful of really nice restaurants. Either by quad, taxi or bus, a day trip is easy from Santa Teresa and you can still make it back in time for the sunset.

Sailing tour

Depart from the Fishermans cove in Mal Pais and spend the afternoon sailing along the beautiful coast. Jump off the boat for a refreshing swim, or just relax in the sunshine with a cold drink in your hand.

Stand up paddle boarding

  • Take a tour in the open ocean or down some of the beautiful rivers in the area. From beginners to pros, there are options for everyone.

Whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or experienced surfer, the surf lessons are perfect for all levels and taught by certified instructor. There are also surfboards available. For advice on where to find the best waves or how to book a surf lesson, just ask the reception.

With the growing popularity of the area, the water can get a bit crowded during the high season. For this reason beginners or novice surfers are asked to always have a surf lesson first. Surf etiquette is essential for the safety of yourself and others in the water and a properly trained surf instructor will help teach you the ins and outs.

Knowing how to control your board keeps you and everyone around you safer, plus you will have more fun. Even athletes will tell you that surfing is the hardest sport they've ever tried, but getting out in the water, surrendering to the power of the ocean, and standing up can be one of the most amazing feelings in the world.

Tortuga Island snorkeling

This full day adventure is all-inclusive. Cruise along the coast for a breathtaking 50-minute boat ride to begin your voyage to Tortuga Island. Upon arriving to the tropical paradise of Tortuga Island, you'll anchor the boat within viewing distance of the white sand beach for snorkeling. The crystal clear waters of Tortuga are surrounded by volcanic rock reef, which is home to some of the best snorkeling on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive either at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) or Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR).

Once at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), you can board a connecting flight out to the Tambor Airport terminal on the Nicoya Peninsula. The flight itself is about 30 minutes long and both airlines run about 95 USD one-way, with a limit on the weight of your luggage of 25 pounds or 12 kilos. Anything over this you will be charged an extra amount.

Additionally, there are restrictions on bringing surfboards on these planes, so it is good to check before booking your tickets. Once you arrive in Tambor, a taxi will cost you around 50 USD to come to Santa Teresa and takes approximately one hour.

Arrival by bus

The cheapest option is the direct bus that leaves from the San Carlos bus station in San Jos. The price is approximately 15 USD but the departure times are limited. They currently only leave at 06:00 and 14:00. Depending on the arrival time of your flight, if you want to take the bus, you may have to spend the night in San Jos. Please note that the Juan Santa Maria International Airport (SJO) is actually located in Alajuela and is not San Jos. To get to the San Carlos bus station from the airport, it is a 30-minute and 20 USD taxi ride. Alternately, there are a number of buses that travel between the airport and downtown San Jos. Look for the red buses, which pass approximately every 15 minutes at the airport. Board any one of these to the center of San Jos for about 1 USD per person and then you can take a taxi over to the San Carlos bus station. The buses may take up to 45 minutes between the airport and the center, and the direct bus always leaves on time.

Arrival by ferry

Whether arriving by bus, taxi, shuttle, or rental car, all must cross the Gulf of Nicoya on the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera. Do not take the ferry to Naranjo as this is a different destination and will prolong your journey by one or two hours depending on the conditions. The ferry costs around 25 USD for a car to board and a little less than 2 USD for passengers. It is a quite beautiful journey through the gulf and lasts about one hour. The schedule is subject to change with short notice, so it is always a good idea to double check the times especially if you are driving a rental car. Arriving five minutes late to the ferry could cause you to wait three hours for the next one.

Arrival by shuttle

The hotel has a shuttle service for about 45 USD per person, which will bring you directly to the door of Casa Zen GuestHouse and Yoga Center. Depending on the season, they may only leave at 08:00, so if your flight arrives later in the day, you may again be looking at a night in Alajuela or San Jos before arriving to Casa Zen GuestHouse and Yoga Center Costa Rica the next day. Please contact Casa Zen GuestHouse and Yoga Center Costa Rica for more information regarding the shuttle.

Arrival by taxi

If you jump into any taxi outside the airport and say take me to Casa Zen GuestHouse and Yoga Center. They may charge you anywhere between 200 USD and 250 USD. A taxi only to Puntarenas, where you will need to board the ferry to Paquera, will be a bit cheaper, but beware that they may try to charge you quite a bit. Then on the other side, from Paquera down to Santa Teresa, another taxi will run around 70 USD.

For information about the booking conditions, please send Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center an inquiry.

"We did the 7-night mini retreat and did not want to leave, I would happily go back again. Casa Zen is a little slice of Costa Rican paradise, with excellent yoga teachers and facilities and beach access. In a week I felt like my yoga improved a lot, I loved every class and felt amazing."

"My ONLY gripe is that the kitchen closes at 8pm, which is when the evening yoga class ends. So you either have to make dinner really early or use the outdoor kitchen after 8, which really doesn't count, it has very little facilities, no space, and hardly any dishes or crockery."

"Other than that a wonderful stay, highly recommend!!!"

"Casa Zen is awesome and great value for a long term traveller looking for time to reenergize and a bit of luxury in the beautiful Santa Teresa without blowing the budget. We booked in for the 7-night mini yoga retreat. Yoga classes twice daily, all the instructors are amazing and classes are about 80mins long so great value for money. The dorm was great and cleaned every day. Breakfast was provided - toast and fruit and coffee. We rented surfboards for a good price and good waves to learn on very close. Special thanks to Mariano, he is awesome and so helpful! Would have loved to stay longer. Graciás!"

"We had a private room with a decent kitchen. Room was very clean and looked very nice. Front desk staff were rude and cold which I didn't understand. A man who was working there quite often was uninterested in helping us and was vague with anything he told us. Other than the staff, the vibe is really nice with great places to relax and also very close to the beach. The breakfast shouldn't really be advertised as a breakfast as it was just fruit and toast. The value of Casa Zen is great minus a couple things that would be easy to fix."

"The yoga centre has a great location by the beach and across from a big supermarket. I found most of the yoga teachers were very good. The retreat was quite unorganised and the breakfast and communal times did not fit well with the yoga classes. Good value for the price." website, edited

"I seriously can't say enough good things about my experience here at Casa Zen! I was booked in for a 7-day yoga retreat with them as this was my main reason for my trip, and I ended up staying 16 days! The yoga retreats are so affordable when coupled with the accommodation, you can't find a better deal in a nicer and safer location! Steps from the beach and also local restaurants and shops it's hard to beat! The staff go above and beyond there and the cleaning ladies work hard each and everyday making the place very clean and comfortable. They even make your bed for you everyday! Not many hostels do that! The breakfast they have every morning of delicious fresh fruit, toast and coffee is the best way to start the day! The yoga is awesome, with classes running at different times of the day every day, so everyone is satisfied! Jen and April were two of my favorite instructors, but all are brilliant! "

"I sadly ended up with some food poisoning from a local restaurant.. But Julio personally rang the Doctor on my behalf, drove me to the Doctor and helped me with translations and picked me up after my appointment. It's like a big family here and they looked after me so well, I can't thank them enough!"

"Yes it gets warm during the nights with no Aircon, but everything else here makes up for it. If you are someone that needs aircon go stay in a hotel. "

"The common area is so cosy and comfortable here, I found if people wanted to chat with one another and connect it was easy enough. But if you want some solitude this is just as easy with the many hammocks and seating areas around. Complaints about the road noise, you will get that everywhere here as Santa Teresa is based around one big long dirt road. So just bring earplugs as I did and I slept very well. "

"I would highly recommend Casa Zen if you're looking for an amazing yoga place with amazing staff right next to the beach!"

"I would love to come back here again one day! :)"

"The common areas are quit nice! The dorm we were in was clean and welcoming! Showers and toilets are downstairs which is not ideal but they're clean as well so. Breakfast is including in the morning with a large plate of fruit and a toast! Really appreciated! And finally, those classes (yoga and cardio fit) are just awesome! Before or after a long day, it's very resourceful!"

"The staff is really welcoming and nice. We stayed there for six nights and I would recommend it. The dorms and rooms are very clean and the breakfast is good and includes toast, coffee, and fruits. The bathrooms are nothing special and you just can get a cold shower. It is only 300 meters to the beach and there are some nice restaurants around."

"We loved our stay at Casa Zen. If ever were back in Santa Teresa, we'd surely visit again! The accommodation is basic but very clean and at night it is so quiet that our sleep was serene. The breakfast of fruit, coffee, and toast was what we valued the most. The sea was so close and beautiful too. I'd definitely recommend this stay for you!"

"This place is a true hostel. A lot of common space, hammocks to relax in when its raining or even if you feel like a siesta. Good tips from the staff (thank you Julio and Mariano). Its a two-minute walk to the beach, a two-minute walk to the supermarket, and there are a lot of different classes during the day from yoga to fitness. The two kitchens have really good breakfast and there are many activities at the reception. We stayed at the studio and we really enjoyed it. The kitchen has everything you need. Theres also a spacey studio, and good toilets. This place made our stay in the area much better."

"Casa Zen is a beautiful hostel located in Santa Teresa. Everyone was really welcoming and the hostel seemed to be in high demand. We stayed one night in a dorm and another couple of nights in a room with four beds. I had no complaints of either room. Casa Zen emphasizes having a low impact on the environment, so everything is recycled or composted which I do at home anyways. I had read some reviews before I went that the water is turned off at night sometimes. I only had an issue once and it was my issue for procrastinating. Casa Zen is extremely close to the beach, you turn right at the road and you are at one of the most beautiful beaches. The vibe at Casa Zen is very relaxed and down to earth which I appreciated. The breakfast was great as well! A fresh variety of fruit and toast are included every morning. I missed that breakfast at every other hostel we stayed at! And if you are there at the right time, you may even get to go to a full moon party, which was a good time. It could have been better but we had a day of traveling the next day. When I was there I didn't attend any of the yoga sessions, but from listening to the people who did they were extremely satisfied with the teachers and the lovely space you got to practice in. Some classes looked to be really intimate and other classes some people were coming in from other hostels in the area to join.We took the ferry from Puntarenas. I would recommend taking a taxi from the bus station to the ferry port. There is no shade and its about a half hour walk with your pack. May not seem bad, but once the sun is hitting you, you'll be thinking you should have taken the advice! Get there early and keep in mind that the bus departure is from Paquera. We arrived around 16:30 and the next bus supposedly wasn't until 19:00, and there is nothing there other then a little soda and eager taxi drivers. We were lucky and had met some people who drove us to Cobano where we caught the bus to Santa Teresa.Side note: We were cautioned about going onto the beach at night, which we took pretty seriously after hearing a person being robbed for what little they had on them. This could happen anywhere though, but it is a warning I would put out there. Casa Zen however is extremely safe and had night security too. Highly recommended for sure! Thanks Casa Zen for an unforgettable stay!"

"Casa Zen is a gem. This jungle paradise just two minutes away from the beach is the best hostel I've stayed at. I stayed in a dorm room for nine nights. The room has lockers, high ceilings, and ceiling fans. The breakfast is great and includes piles of fruit and good coffee. The seating area and mezzanine are perfect for relaxing in or you can chose one of the many hammocks around the grounds to swing while watching the chickens, cat, or iguanas wandering around the property. Sure the shower pressure was inconsistent (I've seen in other reviews) but that's what happens in more remote places at the end of the dry season. The staff were wonderful and really friendly but not pushy. Bikes, surfboards, and more for rent at the hostel. They organize shuttles and surf lessons for you and of course, yoga with wonderful teachers. The entire hostel was cleaned from top to bottom every day. I can honestly say I have never seen a cleaner hostel.Location wise, its ideally situated in the middle of the Santa Teresa strip. A short walk in one direction (15 minutes) you will be at the ATMs, and why not stop into the bakery for a ginger lemon iced tea. There are no words to describe how good this tastes when its 38 degrees Celsius. In the other direction, there are restaurants and shops as well but you dont have to go that far. Adjacent to the hostel is an excellent sandwich shop and across the road is the Brazilian barbecue restaurant with phenomenal empanadas. If you want to relax, be treated like a friend, meet like-minded non-partiers, do yoga, walk on the beach, and completely unwind this is the place for you. I will be back."

"We had a very rough drive from Tamarindo to Santa Teresa but it was worth all the bumps in the road. Santa Teresa has the nicest natural beach I've ever seen. Casa Zen is conveniently located one minute away from the beach and right in front of a wonderful Argentine grill restaurant and a grocery store. Casa Zen will offer you a very zen atmosphere that will force you to relax whether you're into yoga or not. The rooms are nice and clean. The beds are not bad but the pillows definitely need to be replaced. But trust me with the beaches around and the nice hammocks around the hostel, you will not want to stay long in your room."

"Breakfast includes coffee, fresh fruits, toasts, and jam. Its just enough to get you through your relaxing beach day. The staff is very friendly and will help you book any activity or taxi. If you don't have a car, I recommend you rent an all terrain vehicle that can be rented for about 50 USD per day but will let you discover all the beaches around the area and even a couple of cities nearby. Overall its a wonderful place to relax!"

"This place was everything I was looking for! It's about 500 yards from the beach with it's own little walkway. The yoga deck is gorgeous; all wood, hammocks, open air! There are plenty of bathrooms, outdoor showers, chill little bungalows with lots of pillows and tables, amazing breakfast that was almost too much to finish, and a resident troop of howler monkeys that live nearby! The front desk also set up a surf lesson for me for a great price! "

"I stayed in one of the four-person rooms upstairs near the yoga deck. It was clean and quiet. Linens and towel provided. Everyone got a locker so I suggest bringing a lock. Right across the street is a great Argentinian steakhouse that also makes great pizza. During the day, they do small plates like empanadas at the bar. Love this place and will absolutely be back."

"Yes. I loved it at Casa Zen! Beautiful hostel 1 minute from the beach, set back from the road. Large rooms and spotlessly clean everywhere... Loads of bathrooms and always found in a good, clean state. I'll go on a limb here and say Casa Zen seems to attract a nice, chilled, "zen" crowd. This is not a party hostel and that's a good thing! The atmosphere is very much in keeping with a yoga vibe. Which I think in turns means people are very considerate of each other here."

"Breakfast is a huge plate of fruit, toast and jam and endless coffee. They offer bikes and surfboards for rent. The communal areas are really comfortable. "

"Supermarket across the road and an abundance of restaurants and cafs within minutes walking. The guests here were predominately women. "

"I was looking for a nice yoga retreat, but so many are very structured and very expensive. Casa Zen is perfect: you build your own yoga experience (and all the instructors are great), but you can also run off and hit the beach, any of the cool hippy shops around, or some of the fun day trips. And it's so reasonably priced! I never would have thought to do this, but honestly the best way to get around is on an atv. Highly recommended to rent for at least one day and go exploring. The roads are terrible but its part of the charm. I love the outdoor kitchen where I would make my early morning coffee, the communal areas, the yoga deck. Howler monkeys in the mango tree, really just a completely special place."
