Accommodation

At the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre, you have a choice of accommodation of shared room, single room, twin room (only if two of you are booking together), and double room (only if two of you booking or you want to treat yourself to the room for yourself).

The accommodation contains one room for six, two rooms for four, three single rooms, and two double rooms. The accommodation can sleep up to 21 people but Burren Yoga only ever takes a maximum of 15 people on any of the retreats. The men are sharing the room in one of the dorms and women in the other.

The mattresses are very high-quality orthopedic mattresses with a top layer of memory foam, ensuring one of the most comfortable sleep. The bed linen is high thread count Egyptian cotton and lovely to slip into after a full day of yoga, meditation, outdoor activities, eating amazing vegetarian food, and laughing and socializing with like-minded people. All the beds are freshly made up before you arrive and there are also fresh towels laid out on your bed.

There are four shared bathrooms (each with a shower, hand basin, and toilet) and an extra toilet shared between the 15 retreat participants. The accommodation doesn't have any en-suite bathrooms at the yoga center. One of the bathrooms has a bath where you can soak and relax.

The shared accommodation has bunk beds. These are not “the usual bunk beds” and the top bunk is hand carved and suspended from the ceiling. The lower bunk is completely independent of the upper bunk with plenty of headroom in between. Please be aware that the bedrooms are very small and there are no wardrobes. There is very little shelf space to store your belongings.

Shared dorm

Burren Yoga is trying to have a maximum of four people in the room for six, and three people in the rooms for four, but this all depends on male-female ratio on the retreat. The beds are not normal “bunk beds,” one bed is suspended from the ceiling and the other is a freestanding divan underneath it. Most of the beds are individually carved “works of art” by Johnny Ray who carves spirals and curves into all his work.

The rooms do not have any wardrobes. There is limited shelf space for storage. All the rooms are spotlessly clean with underfloor heating, timber floors, and hotel quality mattresses and bed linen. You will be supplied with a bath and hand towel.

Private single room

There are only three single rooms so you may need to book well in advance in order to secure one of these single rooms. The rooms are very small and do not have any wardrobes. The door does not open fully as it opens against the bed. There is limited shelf space for storage. All the rooms are spotlessly clean with underfloor heating, timber floors and hotel quality mattresses and bed linen. You will be supplied with a bath and hand towel.

Private twin room

The twin room is actually a small single room with bunk beds. There are only two single rooms with bunk beds so you may need to book well in advance in order to secure one of these twin rooms. The beds are not normal bunk beds, one bed is suspended from the ceiling and the other is a freestanding divan underneath it. Most of the beds are individually carved works of art by Johnny Ray who carves spirals and curves into all his work.

The rooms are very small and do not have any wardrobes. The door does not open fully as it opens against the bed. The room is so small it is only advised for a couple or very good friends, but at least you will have it to yourselves. There is limited shelf space for storage. All the rooms are spotlessly clean with underfloor heating, timber floors and hotel quality mattresses, and bed linen. You will each be supplied with a bath and hand towel.

Private double room

The double room has one standard sized 4.6-inch wide double bed. The room is very small and does not have a wardrobe. The door does not open fully as it opens against the bed. There is limited shelf space for storage. All the rooms are spotlessly clean with underfloor heating, timber floors and hotel quality mattresses, and bed linen. You will each be supplied with a bath and hand towel.

Program

Treat yourself to a stress free week of energizing yoga, relaxing yoga, calming meditation, relaxing yoga nidra, amazing vegetarian food, and a guided outdoor walk in the hills or by the sea.

An ideal week in summer time to let go of the stresses and strains of everyday life and to let go into a very peaceful and tranquil environment with a gifted teacher and share some time with like minded people.

Grainne’s teaching is mainly based on flowing movements coordinated with the breath. Grainne will remind you to bring your awareness back to the breath which will allow you to go deeper into the experience as one ‘allows and let’s go’ rather than getting caught up in thoughts or with over-exertion.

The Flow yoga class (Saturday and Sunday morning) will start with Pranayama (breath practise) to ground and center followed by Vinyasa flow sequences - Vinyasa means movements with breath making yoga essentially a breath focused movement practise or moving meditation.

Grainne likes to keep her classes varied and versatile so that students are kept on their toes and never know what to expect. She teaches in a way that helps to keep the practitioner’s mind engaged on the ‘here and now’ and this is a very good training and preparation for the mind when it comes to breath focused meditation. Sequences will flow from simple to more energetic - this class will tone, strengthen, and increase flexibility.

Each person will be encouraged to respect their own limitations and there is not comparison made between people. Each person will be given adjustments and variations suitable to their own level of fitness.

Grainne’s soothing voice will encourage each person to challenge themselves in a safe way while she keeps an eye on each person and gives adjustments to each person. The yoga Flow class removes energy blocks and one can experience a feeling of lightness and enthusiasm. Some of these postures are challenging and some of the postures that Grainne will teach will be more relaxing and restorative.

Grainne also studied the ancient technique of yoga Nidra ( yogic sleep) which brings you to a very deep state of relaxation. In this state it is then possible for you to give some guidance to your inner self to bring positive results to your life.

The meditation will be a breath focused meditation based on the principles of focusing the mind on the flow and quality of the breath. This is done in a comfortable seated position to allow free and unhindered movement of the Diaphragm.

As one progresses this helps the practitioner to relax and become the ‘witness’ of her thoughts rather than controlled by them allowing one to ‘down - regulate’ the nervous system, develop mindfulness, and help with better sleep.

The Yin classes will consist of long held seated poses where poses will be held typically held for 2 to 4 mins to access the body’s connective tissue. This stretches and tones ligaments, joint capsules, tendons, bones and all the body’s fascia preventing inflammation and improving mobility.

This practise will also work on the body’s energetic meridians address stagnation / depletion and generally balancing your energetic body. Beginners will be introduced gradually to meditation, which will deepen and lengthen in practice over the week and those wanting to just sit for longer periods will be allowed the space. This will be a breath focussed meditation, where one will help keep one’s awareness with the here and now, by gently focussing on the breath.

Grainne has many years now of experience teaching people from different backgrounds, age and level. She teaches regular classes in a number of locations in Galway city, as well as weekly classes at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Centre.

The social aspect of these retreats where you meet like-minded people is a great fun element of the retreat. Each person is cared for on an individual basis, and each person works at their own level and no comparisons are made between anybody.

By the end of the retreat you will be feeling lighter, more open in your body and your mind, and fully refreshed to bring this new energy and new practices into your everyday life.

Included excursions

Each day after breakfast, Dave will lead the group on a guided outing and we will either do a hill walk in the Burren hills or a walk by the sea. All these activities are optional.

These guided outings are an important part of each eco yoga retreat and it is a lovely way to see some special places in the Burren well away from the usual tourist places.

Hidden forest walk in Burren

The secret forest has been described by one visitor as the type of place that fairies and elves live, and when they heard us coming they hid out of sight but did not have time to take away their fairy veils and magic feelings which fill the air.

During your guided outing you stop off for lunch at one of the best local restaurants or cafes. One favourite is the Ballyvaughan tea rooms where Steven Spielberg flew in especially to order the cheesecake.
