You will be accommodated at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Center during this holiday. You will have the possibility to choose from a shared room, a twin or a double room, and a single private room. The center can sleep up to 21 persons, but for the retreats, the maximum is 15.

The beds have been individually handed carved by their local carpenter Johnny Ray. The shared accommodation has bunk beds. These are not the usual bunk beds, the top bunk bed is hand carved and suspended from the ceiling. The lower bunk bed is completely independent of the upper bunk bed with plenty of headroom in between.

The mattresses are very high-quality orthopedic mattresses, with a top layer of memory foam, ensuring one of the most comfortable nights of sleep. The bed linen is high thread count Egyptian cotton and lovely to slip into after a full day of yoga, meditation, outdoor activities, amazing vegetarian food, and laughing and socializing with like-minded people. All the beds are freshly made up before you arrive.

You will be supplied with a bath and hand towel. All the bedrooms have underfloor heating and are warm and cozy even in the winter time. The center has four shared bathrooms, each with a shower, hand basin, and toilet and an extra toilet shared between the 15 retreat participants. They do not have any en-suite bathrooms at the yoga center.


This retreat is suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness, but will also challenge each person to work with the postures to their own ability. An ideal weekend to let go of the stresses and strains of everyday life and to let go into a very peaceful and tranquil environment with a gifted teacher and share some time with like-minded people.

The flow class on Saturday and Sunday morning will start with pranayama (breathing practice) to ground and center followed by Vinyasa flow sequences- Vinyasa means movements with breath making yoga essentially a breath-focused movement practice or moving meditation. Poses will be taught from foundational level up with sound anatomical principles so new students can work safely to explore or more experienced students can deep their practise.

Sequences will flow from simple to more energetic and this class will help to tone, strengthen, and increase flexibility. Each person will be encouraged to respect their own limitations and there is no comparison made between people. Each person will be given adjustments and variations suitable to their own level of fitness.

Carmel’s soothing voice will encourage each person to challenge themselves in a safe way while she keeps an eye on each person and gives adjustments to each person. The Vinyasa flow yoga class removes energy blocks and one can experience a feeling of lightness and enthusiasm. Some of these postures are challenging and some of the postures that Carmel will teach will be more relaxing and restorative.

Carmel also studied the ancient technique of yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) which brings you to a very deep state of relaxation. In this state, it is then possible for you to give some guidance to your inner self to bring positive results to your life.

The meditation will be a breath-focused meditation based on the principles of focusing the mind on the flow and quality of the breath. This is done in a comfortable seated position to allow free and unhindered movement of the diaphragm.

As one progresses, this helps the practitioner to relax and become the witness of your thoughts rather than controlled by them allowing one to downregulate the nervous system, develop mindfulness, and help with better sleep.

The Yin class will consist of long-held seated poses where poses will be held typically held for two to four minutes to access the body’s connective tissue. This stretches and tones ligaments, joint capsules, tendons, bones, and all the body’s fascia preventing inflammation and improving mobility. This practice will also work on the body's energetic meridians address stagnation or depletion and generally balance your energetic body.

Beginners will be introduced gradually to meditation, which will deepen and lengthen in practice over the week and those wanting to just sit for longer periods will be allowed space.

This is a great class to introduce the concept of mindfulness and Carmel will introduce the core Buddhist text, the Satipatthana Sutta, the four foundations of mindfulness.

On Saturday after breakfast, Dave will lead the group on a guided outing and you will either do a hill walk in the Burren hills or a walk by the sea. All these activities are optional. These guided outings are an important part of each eco yoga retreat and it is a lovely way to see some special places in the Burren well away from the usual tourist places.

The secret forest has been described by one visitor as the type of place that fairies and elves live, and when they heard you coming they hid out of sight but did not have time to take away their fairy veils and magic feelings which fill the air. During your guided outing, you will stop off for lunch at one of the best local restaurants or cafes. One favorite is the Ballyvaughan tea rooms where Stephen Spielberg flew in especially to order the cheesecake.

The Burren is famous for its wildflowers and it is lovely to see wild orchids during the months from May to September. Gearoid, the food genius, will be feeding you amazing vegetarian food and if you have ever wondered what it would be like to be on a weekend vegetarian retreat rest assured you will be pleasantly surprised and may even get hooked. He has a brilliant reputation for preparing vegetarian food to the highest standard.

Carmel has many years now of experience teaching people from different backgrounds, age, and level. She teaches regular classes in Cork city, teaches workshops and retreats in Ireland. On Friday and Saturday evening, Gearoid the cook, who used to work in a Hare Krishna restaurant in New York, will prepare with love, a delicious vegetarian dinner and many people have said they have not eaten vegetarian food as good as this at any restaurant.

By the end of the retreat you will be feeling lighter, more open in your body and your mind, and fully refreshed to bring this new energy and new practices into your everyday life.

These outings are fun, and a lovely way to get to know the other participants on the retreat.

During this retreat, you will be staying at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Center, in Kinvara, Ireland. The center was designed and built using timber-framed buildings, which have ceiling and floor windows that provide passive solar heating and amazing views over the Burren Hills. The buildings are super insulated and also have underfloor heating throughout so that they are warm and cozy all year round.


The Burren is located on the Wild Atlantic Way, on the west coast of Ireland. The Burren is steeped in ancient history and the Poulnabrone dolmen is over 5,000 years old. The area is known for its huge numbers of ancient stone forts, dolmens, wedge tombs, and thousands of ancient monuments. From the Burren rock, you will see the wildflowers, experience the silence, and truly appreciate the beneficial effects this special place on the west coast of Ireland can have on you.

You will enjoy daily delicious vegetarian meals during this holiday. Each evening, Gearoid, the cook who used to work at a Hare Krishna restaurant in New York will weave together the best of ingredients, using locally produced organic vegetables, fresh herbs, and spices and will create these amazing dishes.

The food is a combination of the best healthy vegetarian ingredients, combined carefully with fresh herbs and spices to produce amazing vegetarian food which is a delight to the taste buds and the enjoyment of eating.

Burren Yoga can cater for any special diets including vegan, wheat and dairy free, coeliac, or any special diet to cater for allergies or intolerances. Please make sure you let them know about any special diets when you fill in your booking form.

While on your guided outing, you will stop for lunch at one of the best local restaurants or cafes, which is a great way to sample the best of the local cuisine in the Burren area. Dave, your guide, knows all the best places to eat and is always ready to help with suggestions on the best dishes in each of the local cafes.

How to get there

Driving directions from Belfast, Drogheda, and Dublin

  • Skirt around Dublin on the M50 and take EXIT 7 to the N4.
  • Take the N4 road signed “Galway, The West”.
  • Continue onto motorway M4 signed “Sligo” or “Galway” and stay on M4 for 45 kilometers.
  • Leave M4 at Junction 11 signed “Galway”.
  • Continue onto M6 signed “Galway”. Stay on this motorway for approximately 136 kilometers.
  • Take the EXIT 19 signed for Limerick or Oranmore.
  • Take the first exit at the roundabout signed Limerick.
  • After approximately 2 kilometers, take the first exit at the roundabout signed Limerick.
  • After approximately 5 kilometers, take the second exit at the roundabout signed Limerick.
  • Stay on the N18 road through Clarinbridge and reach Kilcolgan village, 8 kilometers since motorway exit.
  • In Kilcolgan village, pass the Topaz petrol station on RHS.
  • Take the next right N67 signed “Kinvara”.
  • Continue 10 kilometers into Kinvara village.
  • In Kinvara, take the first left at the Sextons Downtown pub.
  • Immediately, take the right fork signed Burren Yoga.
  • After 2.7 kilometers, go straight through crooked crossroads.
  • 0.5 kilometers past the crooked crossroads, take right turn signed Burren Yoga.
  • Follow narrow twisty winding roads for 3.2 kilometers.
  • At crossroads, take the right signed Burren Yoga.
  • Continue for 1 kilometer.
  • The center is on the left, about 300 meters before T junction.
  • Drive in over the cattle grid and take the immediate left marked “Car Park”, and please park your car neatly to allow others room to turn easily.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Shannon Airport (SNN), Dublin International Airport (DUB), Cork Airport (ORK), Ireland West Airport Knock (NOC), or Kerry Airport (KIR). Taxis and other means of transportation to Burren Yoga can be booked, but they are your responsibility.

Arrival by bus

The nearest bus stop is in Gort village, which is six miles away from the center. You can take the 51 Eireann bus from Shannon Airport (SNN) to Gort. The ride will cost you approximately 5 EUR. Do not take a bus to Kinvara. The center is five miles away from Kinvara.

Arrival by ferry

There are a number of ferries which service Ireland.

Arrival by taxi

From Shannon Airport (SNN), the reduced taxi fare costs around 60 EUR and the taxi driver will team you up if anybody else is flying in close to your arrival time. You need to book this taxi at least 24 hours before your arrival.
