Stay in a beautiful Portuguese Quinta (country house) surrounded by nature close to the beaches of the Silvercoast. Recharge with daily yoga classes, learn to surf and enjoy delicious food.
The retreat center consists of a main house with nine bedrooms and six bathrooms and an annex with three apartments. The large south-facing terrace with beautiful views over the surrounding green hills is the ideal place to enjoy dinner or just relax with a book.
The spacious living and dining room is the center of the house where meals can be enjoyed together and the big fireplace makes sure that even during colder days it is warm and cozy. There is an indoor and outdoor yoga space for daily yoga classes and an outdoor swimming pool to cool down during the warmer days.
The main house is surrounded by a big garden with numerous fruit trees which offers enough space for everyone to relax. For guests arriving by car, there is a car park on the grounds.
As the main house is built against a rock its different levels give it a unique character. Each room has a different size and offers different views of the surrounding area. The guest rooms are divided over four levels with no more than four rooms per floor. There are a variety of accommodation options:
Portugal and in particular the coast around Peniche and Baleal offer some of the best conditions for surfing, regardless if you are a beginner or want to improve your surfing. Buddha Retreats believes that students learn best in small groups where instructors can spend enough time with each student to address individual needs and skill levels.
The surf lessons are suited for all levels from beginners, and intermediate to advanced surfers. The instructors will take their time to explain theory and practice basic skills on the beach. They will provide you with all the necessary equipment and a wetsuit to keep you warm while surfing. Surfing conditions are good all year round with bigger waves during autumn and winter and smaller waves in spring and summer.
The yoga practice focuses on core strength and balance which have great benefits for surfing. Each class is a challenge and you will work your body. Sun salutations are a great way to strengthen the arms and the chest before surfing while forward bending and twisting are a great way to release the body after a long day of surfing. Each session ends with at least 5 minutes of relaxation (Savasana).
Surfers and non-surfers of all levels can benefit from the classes. During your yoga and surf retreats, Buddha Retreats will schedule one daily yoga class and one daily surf class. The yoga studio is fully equipped with mats and necessary props so there is no need to bring anything. For the surf lessons, Buddha Retreats provide you with all the necessary equipment such as wetsuits and surfboards. Bring water-resistant sunscreen (FPS 30) if you join a yoga and surf retreat.
If you book a 4 or 5-day retreat during the 8-day retreats the schedule of the 8-day retreat will be followed.
Nancy is a lively, energetic, caring, and attentive Iyengar yoga teacher. She has completed the 3-year Iyengar teacher training program and has been teaching ever since. In her classes, she brings the energy that her yoga practice has brought her. Guiding the students safely toward the benefits that yoga brings. Making contact with each student, correcting, adjusting, and teaching how each body can develop in its own unique way. Making it possible for everyone to experience the advantages of the Iyengar yoga method.
Frits Vogelzang is one of the founders of Buddha Retreats. He is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher with more than 10 years of teaching experience. Frits is the in-house instructor and has been teaching yoga classes at Buddha Retreats since 2014. His teaching style is energetic and accessible for beginners as well as for more advanced students.

Buddha Retreats takes the food very seriously. As part of all the retreats, you will be provided with daily delicious and healthy meals. You will be served an abundance of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, often coming from their own garden or the nearby markets. The menu is based on the philosophy of whole foods, so no processed foods and preservatives as much as possible.
In the morning you will be served a healthy and energising breakfast which includes fresh fruit, homemade granola, freshly baked bread and banana bread among other things. After an active day, you will enjoy dinner either on the terrace enjoying the views across the surrounding hills or indoors in front of the crackling fireplace.
As part of the retreats, you can also enjoy a selection of fresh fruits, coffee, herbal teas and purified water as much as you wish. During dinner time, Portuguese red and white wines will be served.

Once you arrive at Lisbon Airport and picked up your luggage, you need to take a taxi to the Campo Grande bus terminal which is only 2.5 kilometers away from the airport. There is a taxi stand just outside of the arrival area. From the Campo Grande terminal buses leave frequently to Bombarral (around 45 minutes).
The bus to Bombarral leaves on the right side of the terminal in a side street (when looking towards the football stadium) opposite a tall green building. You can download the bus timetable of the Rapida Verde bus from Lisbon to Bombarral from the website of Rodoviaria do Oeste. From the bus terminal in Bombarral it is a 10-minute taxi ride to Buddha Retreats (10 EUR on weekdays and 12 EUR on weekends one way). They are happy to arrange a taxi for you in Bombarral.
