During this yoga and surf retreat, you will be staying in the beautiful Mountain Riad located at the edge of the Anti-Atlas Mountains in the Moroccan countryside. You will have the opportunity to explore the Moroccan coast for daily sessions. If the weather conditions are right, you will also head north for a day trip to Imsouane.

The surf classes are suitable for all levels from beginners to the more advanced. There are so many peaks along the coast offering waves for all levels. The beginners can enjoy group classes while the more advanced students will be guided to different spots. All equipment and transport will be included.

The yoga session will take place on the roof terrace of the Riad. The yoga classes are Iyengar yoga based and taught by their instructors Frits and Carlijn. The classes will vary from an active asana practice to restorative sessions.

  • Carljin Cornelisse

Carlijn is one of the in-house yoga instructors and is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher. She took her first yoga class while traveling in Central America and even though it was hard work she immediately felt the benefits. Her teachers Cle Souren, Delilah King, and Rembert Petrus have been guiding her and teaching her over the last few years and she is currently preparing for the next level of certification. As she loves to surf, she has been working on special sequences for surfers.

This retreat will take place in Mountain Riad, Taghazout, Morocco.

"This place was amazing. It is located in a breathtakingly beautiful and serene part of the Portuguese countryside. The house is very bohemian-luxury. The food was delicious, I probably over-ate the whole week, because of how good every meal was. The whole staff was so kind, relaxed, and cool. Sitting by the pool reading, laying out, or doing some yoga was unbeatable. The daily yoga classes left me feeling limber and energized. Fritz was great at challenging the more advanced people, but also tended to the needs of the beginners. Roy, the surf instructor, was an unforgettable character that had everyone surfing like a pro (well, sort of) by the end of the week. The retreat was a great value, had a wonderful atmosphere, and was so relaxing and rejuvenating. My only feedback: work on clearing out some of the standing water in the old fountains. I loved it, and can't wait to come back!"

"I attended a 4 day surfing and yoga retreat and my only complaint is that I didn't have time to stay longer. The accommodations were superb both in terms of the lodging and the food. In particular, the vegetarian menu was well prepared and diverse at all meals. In total, it was a perfect get-away and allowed me to fully engage with the yoga and the surfing. Both the yoga and surf instructors were fantastic and tailored the instruction to each individual so that both the beginners and the more experienced members of the group were pushed to reach their potential. The beaches were selected with the surf report and the skill level of the group in mind; however, we only saw excellent beaches all around. I hope to be able to return to Buddha Retreats and would highly recommend it to anyone.", edited

"I had a pleasant and wonderful time at Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf. Everything was perfect, the friendly owners, the surf and yoga lessons, the accommodation, and especially the food was excellent. I could relax a lot and still can feel the energy. "I recently spent four days at the Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf in Bombarral, Portugal. They were four wonderful, rejuvenating days. The hosts were very gracious and the staff was sincerely friendly and accommodating. The yoga was fabulous. Thank you Fritz!! Thanks to Vera, the food was excellent. I didn't do the surfing so I had time to myself to just enjoy the center. I was offered a private yoga class which I enjoyed tremendously. I also love being around animals - they have three dogs and three cats. The accommodations were clean and well maintained. I could easily have spent another four days there doing Iyengar yoga. Thank you to all. I hope to return some day." website, edited

  • Review by Anja from London, UK

"I've recently come back from a 4-day yoga only retreat with Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf, and it was ace!I've been doing Iyengar yoga for several years, but the friend I went with was a beginner, and Carlijn and Fritz catered really well to us both, as well as handling a couple of medical/joint problems that I have confidently. The 2 daily classes were challenging but, all in all, Buddha Retreats is a really friendly and informal place. The rooms are simple, but lovely, and the house and grounds are beautiful. We spent most of the time between classes lounging by the pool. The food is fantastic, and they were able to cater to my friend's gluten intolerance quite well. One small criticism is that it would have been great to have netting / screens on the windows - there were a lot of mosquitoes, and the Ikea bed nets didn't quite do the job, which meant having to keep the windows shut at night. It's a good idea to bring some repellent if you want to sit out on the terrace and chat after dinner. All in all, a really fantastic retreat - am hoping to be back in the future." website, edited

"Back from 4 days of yoga and surf at the Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf property: a quiet place, surrounded by the forest, mountains and rural land full of fruit trees. A perfect place to relax and enjoy. Though 4 days do not allow to complete surf classes (only had the chance to do 2 and you have to take in mind the time of arrival / departure ) the schedule is well organized for all the people attending the retreat. Morning yoga with Fritz was so good! He is so proud of his new yoga studio ;-)) and its well focused to practice surf in the afternoon and I appreciated that a lot.The main house is well distributed and clean, and the hosts can choose whether to have the meals inside or outside, enjoying the views. The nice swimming pool is free to use and towels are available for those who cannot bring. For those not pet-friendly beware of the dogs and cats that live with the owner - team of the house, they are lovely but you never know if all guests like them (I personally loved them)." website, edited

  • Review by Glenda from Amsterdam, The Netherlands

"As a couple who never did yoga before, it was a great way to start and we will definitely continue to do yoga. For us it was a perfect combination of yoga and surf for 4 days. Beforehand we didn't know that there would be so much contact with the other guests (we could've expected it, since you do yoga and surf together), but it was great and we even ate all together on the terrace. The food was very good (even for me with gluten allergy) and we didn't even miss meat/fish after 4 days. I don't know if it is always vegetarian or only because a lot of the other guests were vegetarians. An absolute recommendation!" website, edited

  • Review by Hilda from Elst, The Netherlands

"We had a great time at Buddha Retreats. The atmosphere is very easy and relaxing. In a beautiful surrounding, a tiny white village in the pear orchards. It is not a hotel, but more of a bed and breakfast. That is so charming, because this is what makes it much less formal. We felt as if we were staying with Carlijn and Stefan in their house, but we had great freedom to use whatever we needed. Excellent. I have almost no experience in yoga. Yoga was tough for me, but Carlijn had great tips to make it easier, so I could do the exercises in my own way. The cook is an Italian young man who loves to cook. He made simple, fresh and delicious Italian meals. We rented a small car, which was great for making trips in the neighborhood and visit Obidos and the beautiful sandy beach near Peniche. I would definitely recommend this retreat to other people." website, edited

"I have just spent the most wonderful 4 days at Buddha retreats. It was truly an amazing experience. The accommodation was excellent, the yoga was of a very high standard, the surf instructor was knowledgeable and the food was incredible. The whole experience was well organised with great service. I highly recommend this retreat." website, edited

"Just back from 7 days of yoga and surf. Excellent. Very peaceful location with lots of quiet corners to read a book or just soak up the views and ambiance Stephan, Fritz and Carlijn and the other staff are super nice and helpful. The Iyengar yoga was quite full on but very good and the surfing got better through the week as we benefited from a much better instructor on the last 3 days. The vegetarian food was very tasty and healthy, haven't felt so good in a long time. The accommodation is spotlessly clean, basic but very good value for money. The sea and surfing is about 15 to 20 mins drive away so that maybe too far for some but it was good to back to the retreat each night and socialize with the other guests." website, edited

"To me, Geocaching and yoga, especially Iyengar yoga is a good combination. Attending yoga classes in the morning and hunting for caches in the afternoon. "Perfect" as the taxi driver told me who drove me to the beach of Baleal.During my stay in Portugal, in the village of Columbeira I enjoyed a week of intensive Iyengar yoga classes as well as the little castle that was my home for this week, the fantastic meals made by Vera, the cosy village, the nice trails to Rolia, Po and to the Cross on the hill, the swimming pool, the beach of Baleal not too far away. To me it felt like paradise. Instead of taking a souvenir home with me I decided to leave one behind. This geocache is that souvenir. So I went to the local shop, bought myself a small plastic container and a notebook. Now there is one more geocache to be found in Portugal. This cache also pays tribute to Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar and all teachers of his yoga." website, edited

"The 4 days at Buddha Retreats were absolutely great and I can recommend it to everyone. I hesitated before booking because I was absolutely new to the Iyengar yoga method but I'm glad I went! The team is fantastic and so is the healthy and fresh food and the whole location. The rooms are lovely and you wake up in the middle of lush green Portuguese hills after a deep sleep. The yoga studio is very well equipped and they also teach some yoga classes outside which is just great! The yoga teachers adapted all exercises to what each student needed and the explanations I got helped me a lot. Getting to know the other participants was easy and we connected very quick. I'm already thinking about returning sooner or later." website, edited

"We had a great winter break at Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf! Stephan, Carlijn and Frits have a fantastic place in a very nice, peaceful part of Portugal. The chefs they had on-board, provided amazing lunches and dinners. The food was varied, very tasty and ample for some hungry surfer/yoga practicing people! The surf tuition was also of a high quality and I will describe our surf instructor Sergio as a connoisseur of waves! He was very patient and determined to get us standing on the board, which worked! I was an absolute beginner with Yoga before this trip, having never tried it before! Most of our group were quite advanced but our teachers, Ralph and Donald where very attentive and provided me with a great introduction to Iyengar yoga. Lastly, I have to say our fellow guests were friendly and great company! A varied group from different backgrounds and countries but with a similar mind set. We hope to return soon, hopefully in the summer." website, edited

  • Review by Sylvie from Zurich, Switzerland

"I spent a very nice time. Very nice group, house and surrounding. Beach half an hour drive by car. If you do not surf, you sometimes have luck to have a seat in the surfers car, if not you can order a taxi. Food very good. The first two days macrobiotic, then mostly Italian. I was surprised about the vine. Sometimes we had to ask for new hot tea water. Yoga was great! Great Iyengar guest teacher, Ralph and Donald, from the Iyengar Institute in Amsterdam. I guess because of the surfing, the retreat was much more easy going, than I know it from other retreats. The problem was the cold! Very cold yoga room (no wooden floor, no isolation, you had to wear three layers, pranayama hardly impossible), cold house, often cold shower, electricity on and off. Guess the house was not ready for the winter, why I cannot recommend it in winter, but I am sure it is very nice in summer!" website, edited

"From the first to the last hour I could spend a wonderful time at Buddha Retreats Yoga and Surf in Columbeira. The fantastic house and the lovely furnished rooms made my stay additionally cosy and comfortable. There is more than enough space within and around the house to spend some private time if you wish. We were spoilt with wonderful and fresh food and had the chance to taste during 4 days macrobiotic cuisine. I loved it! and most important for me - the yoga teachers, Daniela and Sara Jane shared the classes which was luxury. One teacher who shows and one who is correcting you! The way they taught suited me perfectly; tough in the morning, more restorative in the afternoon. The surroundings is very quiet and invites you for short or longer walks in the countryside. The only a bit negative moment was about the dining time. We mostly didn't know when lunch/dinner time was and we had to wait quite some time.I can really recommend this retreat and wish Carlijn, Frits and Stefan good luck and lots of success with their little paradise." website, edited

" I had a truly wonderful time at this retreat and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, rustic, relaxed environment to recharge. The owners are delightful and welcoming, gently sociable and available if needed but leave you to your own devices too. I learned so much about Iyengar yoga in a few days and was pushed into shape by a Dutch master! I am now exploring more Iyengar back in London. The surf lessons are also available to yoga visitors and I was lucky to have a one to one lesson with the local Portuguese expert. The food is all home cooked and fresh vegetables from the local market, delicious.I stayed on for a few days after the course finished ....and so glad I did!! I could have stayed forever I felt so at home, thank you all so much :)I am planning a trip next year.....with a new recipe ;) " website, edited

" It was fantastic!!! The people there are incredibly nice and welcoming! The facilities are really beautiful and the whole area has a relaxing area. It is located near a really cozy village which complete the atmosphere of the retreat. The food... Ah, the food! Fruits and vegetables from the area around combined with chefs that really know their stuff. I mean, I love meat! But didn't miss it once! A really gastronimic experience (and also very variated). The yoga is run by people who really know their stuff. Demanding, with a high focus on doing all poses right, which brings it to another level. And the coaches are really good in adjusting the poses to your yoga level. The surfing is taught in small groups and they also go the extra mile to adjust the lessons to all levels, combined with really useful surfing theory- even for intermediates. And also really good teachers who know their stuff and are able to see what you next step is. So all in all, a great experience that I highly recommend to all! " website, edited

" Having never been on a yoga retreat before, I wasn't sure what to expect. But, Buddha Retreats Yoga & Surf surpassed all my expectations. The location and venue was breath-taking. Carljin, Stephan and Fritz were welcoming, organised and calm. They went out of their way to make us comfortable. The yoga teachers Ralf and Donald were knowledgeable in their yoga style and had planned a progressive week that was accessible to all levels. They knew when to safely push individuals or vary poses to meet individual needs and I learnt so much from them. I feel I have progressed, thanks to them.I hadn't planned to surf. But, as Buddha Retreats were so flexible, I was able to join in a few surf lessons with amazingly patient and dedicated teachers Sergio and Pedro. I'm so glad I did as it was a great contrast to the yoga as well as great fun. Last but not least, Jake made fantastic menus every day that were varied and exciting... We often discussed what he would come up with next. Very impressive! I've had an amazing week, made new friends and fantastic memories. Can't wait to go back! " website, edited
