Driving directions from San Jose

  • Drive to Puntarenas for an hour and half and take the “Tambor” car ferry to Paquera. You will be on the ferry for approximately an hour and a half or so.
  • Drive through Tambor to Cobano.
  • In Cobano, drive straight through town and turn left after 1 kilometer to Mal Pais.
  • After 8 kilometers, a total of approximately an hour from getting off the ferry, you will arrive at a crossroad just before the beach.
  • Turn right and the Blue Surf Sanctuary hotel is approximately 3 kilometers on your left.

Note: 4 × 4 car is not necessary but it is recommended in the rainy season. Total journey time from San Jose is 5 hours and half, as Blue Surf Sanctuary recommends that you arrive at Puntarenas at least one hour before the ferry departs.

Driving directions from Liberia

  • Take Route 21 that passes right by the airport, south, towards Santa Cruz and Nicoya.
  • Just keep going straight through every town and the same route 21 will lead you to Carmona in about an hour and half or two after you started your trip.
  • Turn left in a T intersection before entering into Carmona town. The only thing apart from a few signs is a small police station.
  • Take a left turn there and follow the signs to Lepanto, Naranjo, Paquera, or Cobano.
  • If you keep going straight, you’ll get into Carmona town. Thus, you’ll realize that you’ve missed the turn.
  • Again, you only need to follow the road, still route 21, that will change from pavement into gravel at Naranjo. The gravel continues until Paquera.
  • There are two intersections on this road and you should take left both times. Once the pavement starts again, you’ll be in Paquera town.
  • Follow the road until you get to another T intersection.
  • Turn right this time, towards Cobano and Santa Teresa. This is route 160. Follow it, and you’ll cross through Cobano town.
  • Keep going straight through Cobanos crossroad and the pavement again turns into gravel. About one mile after that, you’ll find yourself in another T intersection.
  • Turn Left following the signs towards Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. The bendy road will lead you to Santa Teresa’s crossroad, called “down town”. There you’ll find the bank, the pharmacy, and the doctor.
  • Turn right at the crossroad and drive through the town about 2 to 3 miles. Once you pass “La Hacienda” supermarket on your right, keep going for 500 meters and you’ll see Blue Surf Sanctuary sign on the left hand of the road. You’ll also see the Billabong signs at the hotel's door from the road.

Note: Regarding the drive from Liberia, the roads are in good condition compared to other roads in Costa Rica and the whole drive from the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) to Blue Surf Sanctuary will take you approximately 4 hours.

Driving directions from Manzanillo

  • There are 2 ways to get to Santa Teresa. You can come from the north, from Manzanillo or from the west, through Cobano.
  • If you are coming from the north, across the rivers, about 1 kilometer after you drive through Playa Hermosa, you will pass by Flor Blanca, a big resort.
  • After 100 meters further, on your right hand (beach side), you will see Blue Surf Sanctuary blue sign.
  • Turn right to find Blue Surf Sanctuary.
  • If you are coming the other way, through Cobano, you will enter the town at the crossroad of Mal Pais. There is one street that connects Santa Teresa with Mal Pais. Parallel to the beach and Blue Surf Sanctuary is 4 kilometers north from that crossroad.
  • After you drive by “La Hacienda” supermarket for about 600 meter, you will see Blue Surf Sanctuary sign on your left hand (beach side).

Arrival by airplane

Please book a flight to arrive at Tambor Airport (TMU). Blue Surf Sanctuary will pick you up from the airport by taxi. The pick-up is included in the price.

Arrival by shuttle

Several shared shuttles are available at certain times from specified locations. One option is scheduled public shuttles with Montezuma Expeditions for budget travelers who travel light. Offering scheduled shuttles, the Costa Rica Shuttle is another option. They are happy to pick you up at the airport, certain hotels, or anywhere in San Jose, and will drop you off right at Blue Surf.

Transportation by private shuttle is also available. Private shuttles are more expensive, but more flexible. Private vans offer flexibility (for example, if your flight arrives later in the day and you don’t want to stay overnight in San José). Several companies offer private shuttles including Costa Rica Shuttle.

For information about the booking conditions, please send Blue Surf Sanctuary an inquiry.

"If you're looking to stay at Blue Surf, look no further. My fiancé and I recently stayed at Blue Surf Sanctuary for a birthday / surf getaway. We purchased a package with Blue Surf and I was amazed at how much came with it! Daily breakfast and surfing, yoga lessons, zip lining, ATV / waterfall tour, a massage, and we even added a snorkeling trip to Tortuga Island. Blue Surf Sanctuary was lush, clean, and in a great location. We stayed in the Armonia bungalow and loved it. We rented ATV's to go into town but it's not far. There is a soda and little market that is walking distance from the grounds. Blue Surf is also steps from the beach where we surfed daily."

"The staff: Hands down the most amazing staff I've ever experienced. Sofia and Toro helped me book my travel. They were very informative, quick in their replies, and very friendly. Toro was our surf instructor and I can't wait to come back next year to surf with him again. He was patient with me, helped me improve my pop-up, better understand how to read the waves, etc. I have now returned home as an even better surfer. I can't thank Toro enough. "

"Surf experience with Toro under Blue Surf Adventures: Upon arrival, our luggage was lost by our airline. We were extremely stressed as we came in the low season and worried shops would be closed. Laura was very helpful and accommodating - she even arranged for our taxi to take us shopping and she even brought me a ton of bikinis to choose from for surfing. Daily breakfast is served at a nearby resort, Florblanca. But since they were closed for the first couple of days we were there, Laura put together a menu and cooked for us. I'd say her food is even better than the restaurants. I could eat those huevos rancheros everyday. Jeffrey is the definition of pura vida. His smile and overall demeanor is a pleasure to be around! My fiancé and I had so much fun hanging out with him every day. We miss him already."

"A previous review mentioned that there was no coffee, but there in fact is a coffee maker with delicious coffee. I enjoyed sharing a cup with Anna every morning as well. Thank you to Sofia, Toro, and the staff at Blue Surf for an incredible vacation and for your hospitality. We're already discussing returning every year!"

"Perfect relaxation and honeymoon location! Let me just start with the staff because they were phenomenal and helped coordinate anything we needed (from surf lessons, cab rides, to best dinner spots in town). Extremely quick responding to emails. They were by far the best staff at any place I have ever stayed at. Everything was so lush and beautiful; truly a gem in Playa Hermosa. We will be going back without a doubt. Thank you Blue Surf for the best vacation experience my Husband and I have ever had."

"We had the great fortune of having Toro and Danny surf with us for the week we were in Costa Rica. My two boys, age 9 and 11, really looked up to them as mentors, both Toro and Danny shared their own experiences of surfing growing up and as adults, which helped them to understand the passion of surfing and how those roots are started. They were patient and knowledgeable with all of the questions my boys would ask (and they asked a lot!). My 9 year old came to Costa Rica saying "I'm not the surfer type," and he came home saying, "I love surfing!" They both want to go all the time. I could not be more happy to oblige. I am thankful to Toro and Danny for sharing their passion for surfing and contributing their clear dedication as mentors. We are huge fans and will reach out to them when we come back."

"I went from being a first time surfer (had never done it prior to this vacation) to paddling out "past the break"! Toro was so kind and patient. He was able to teach me so much about water safety, surf etiquette, surf technique, etc. I always felt safe with him, which was most important to me. However, he was able to push me to do a lot that I had no idea I was capable of doing. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Toro and the hospitality I had with Blue Surf Sanctuary."

"We stayed there for 8 nights in a group of 3 families with young kids. The shared kitchen is great and so is the small pool which offers some shade during the hot mid-day hours. The team, the receptionists, cleaning team, night guards, and maintenance staff were super friendly and helpful. We had great time there!"

"Blue Surf Sanctuary was all we needed to have an incredible spring break experience. My deceased husband was the only one with surf experience but all of us got up by the third day. Our children, a 10-year old son and 7-year old daughter, had a fantastic time. Toro and Danny were incredibly patient, kind and encouraging. Our room was comfortable and clean and we enjoyed the pool every day. The food was incredible everywhere we ate in Santa Teresa. It was an excellent adventure!"
