El Tumbo is a private luxury eco-lodge set on five acres of land where the ocean and rainforest meet in a stunning embrace. Tumbo's Casa Grande is a two-story luxury estate with a floor plan designed for communing with friends, family, and the natural world. The open walls and unique architectural fingerprint invite the sights and sounds of the land to captivate and enchant guests.

Beyond the Shore is inviting those from near and far to come enjoy this sacred space which has been specially designed with a unique architectural fingerprint supporting a wide range of practices and a unique interaction with the surrounding jungle. The property is a perfect yoga haven, an exotic adventure retreat, and a miniature private resort experience all wrapped into one. Tumbo's yoga shala is unlike any other and practicing in this space in the jungle is an experience to remember.

You must be willing to live in a dormitory-style housing, you will have your own bed / room that is separated by curtains but will need to share bathrooms with like-minded guests. This retreat center is mostly open aired, it is in the jungle. The rooms are cleaned daily and the retreat center is very secure. The retreat hosts, Felipe and Angelica take the utmost care of all of you while you are at El Tumbo.

Day 1 - Arrival day

Arrive in San Jose and take a hopper flight to Puerto Jimenez. You can take a prearranged taxi to El Tumbo retreat center. Meet your amazing hosts Felipe and Angelica and settle in to the jungle. Situate your rooms, unpack, and take a tour of the grounds. Beyond the Shore will walk you around the grounds and to the beach "Pan Dulce" and have snacks.

Sunset will come and a short cocktail hour (for those of you that would like a nice beer or wine which is not included in retreat cost) or some wonderful juice, coffee or tea. Then get ready for your first delicious dinner and get to know each other after dinner fun.

Day 2 - Welcome to the jungle

Have an early light breakfast with a morning yoga session. Brunch is offered after your yoga session (or if you prefer, you can sleep in to settle into life in the jungle). Next, swim / paddle the beautiful waters of Pan Dulce. Before or after lunch, you will take a nice stroll through the jungle (one and a half to two-hour very easy walk round trip) to Matapalo to view the surf and watch the local rippers. You will have free time to unwind or converse with your retreat friends.

In the evening, you can enjoy slacklining, paddling, hanging in the pool or lounging. This is a day to recover and recharge for the following days of adventure. Michelle will offer an evening relaxation Yin yoga / meditation class to help you all settle deeper into the pureness of the jungle and connect with your spirit animals as you bond with the Osa Peninsula.

Cocktail hour and dinner will rejuvenate your mind and body and fill your soul as you settle into jungle life. There is an optional adventure to the famous "Martina's Bar" to dance and have some local fun!

Day 3 - Waterfall hike and tide pool exploring

Have an early light breakfast with morning yoga session. Then, have brunch to settle into the day of fun and jungle exploring.

Before or after lunch, Beyond the Shore will offer a complimentary guided hike up a pristine jungle stream that twists and winds through deep jungle. The hike will be about one and a half hours round trip but it is a fairly easy trek upstream and ends up at a hidden waterfall where you can take a dip and take some amazing photos before heading back down to enjoy the sunset.

Every evening, you can enjoy all the same activities (or inactivities). Even though Beyond the Shore recommends you to pack light, if you have a favorite card game or other game (Jenga maybe), bring it on down. The sun sets early in Costa Rica so you will play lots of games. There will be a cocktail hour and game time with another delicious dinner to enhance the day's events.

There will be an option to take a surf lesson today, additional costs applied to take surf lessons with professional instructors, boards, and rash guards provided.

Day 4 - All-day catamaran boat ride to Golfo De Dulce

Have an early light breakfast with an earlier than normal yoga session - this will be a mini session of approximately 30 minutes just to keep the muscles moving. Brunch / lunch will be packed for you to take on the catamaran with Beyond the Shore.

Taking the catamaran out in the Golfo Dulce is spectacular and offers amazing views of the gulf along with possible sightings of humpback whales and a wide variety of dolphins. The price of the catamaran tour will be based on the headcount as it is completely optional. Last year, Beyond the Shore had a large group and it was about 50 USD per person, but do not quote Beyond the Shore on that as it changes year to year and will depend on how many of the group would like to go. You will be back in time for a wonderful dinner at El Tumbo and to chat about all the fun you had on the catamaran.

Remember, this tour is optional, but should not be missed. You can choose to stay at El Tumbo and surf, hike, swim or just relax. Beyond the Shore wants each of the guests to be happy and have a wonderful time. As with everything else on this retreat, you all are welcome to do as much or as little as you desire.

Day 5 - Cabo Matapalo waterfall hike to the mysterious Matapalo tree

Have an early light breakfast plus morning yoga session, brunch plus surf, swim or paddle - conditions permitting. The hike to Cabo Matapalo and the Matapalo tree is a bit more demanding than the others Beyond the Shore offers. While still being moderate, it does require some short but steep uphill hiking and occasional scrambling over rocks, but it is completely safe and Beyond the Shore and you will all lend each other a helping hand along the way.

You will pass by several beautiful waterfalls and you will have the option to have a Matapalo pedicure along the way. You’ll just have to wait and see what this is. Once you reach the top of the canyon, it’s a short easy walk to “the tree” where you can sit down and enjoy a snack with a view of the Pacific you will never forget. You will pack a light lunch to bring with you for this adventure.

Depending on how beat up you feel after this adventure will determine what your afternoon / evening plans include. A nice dip in the warm waters of the Golfo or a cooler dip in the pool will probably be on the list. You can have both. There will be a cocktail hour and dinner time, more fun chat, and games to be had.

Day 6 - Guided morning stand up paddle mangrove tour with Felipe and an optional afternoon zip line canopy tour

Have an early light breakfast plus morning yoga session, brunch time, then off you go to enjoy yet another amazing adventure with the El Tumbo host Felipe. He has been offering his own tour of the Tamales River mangroves for several years now and every time, it’s a new and unique adventure.

As with all the group outings, the price will depend on the headcount. This is another tour that will be very unique and both Jeremy and Michelle have only done this with him once. You need to confirm with Felipe on Saturday or Sunday how many will be joining in on this excursion so that he can make preparations. This tour requires a high tide so you will need to base your time around the tides.

Now that you have reached day six, Michelle will be offering another early evening Yin yoga and meditation class to stretch you all out and keep you loose and nimble. Another optional tour for those who would like to experience a zip line canopy tour, this could be a great afternoon option. It requires very little energy as you will take a fairly long and scenic drive into the outskirts of the Corcovado National Park.

Once you arrive, you’ll be in the safe hands of a highly experienced zip line guide and you simply sit back and soar several hundred feet above the jungle floor. It’s an easy to moderate short hike back up to the car and then back to your magical castle in the jungle where, as every night, fresh squeezed juice (plus the optional cocktail hour) and a delicious dinner awaits.

Day 7 - Fun and free time day

Have an early light breakfast plus morning yoga session. Then, an amazing brunch but there is absolutely nothing on the schedule. Eat, drink, be merry. If you decide to do the tide pool hike (and the tide is right), Jeremy will be your fearless leader.

This is also an ideal day for the zip line canopy tour if it’s too much to squeeze in to the previous day. This will give you time to have a massage or facial or just relax, go swimming, surf your brains out or just sit and watch the monkeys. There will be a final night's cocktail and dinner party with optional costume attire (you can bring something simple or make a costume from the jungle that surrounds you).

All of you will be flying out tomorrow and Beyond the Shore suggests doing a little light packing and sorting out (buzzkill) so that you can enjoy your last morning before heading to Puerto Jimenez to catch the hopper flight. You’ll need to be on your way to Puerto Jimenez by about 11:15 to ensure that you can check in at the required 12:30 time and maybe enjoy one last mango smoothie (in your own traveling drinking bottle of course).

Day 8 - Final hugs and departure

Have a light breakfast plus yoga session (45 minutes maximum), brunch, and then take your last swim or magical hike to soak up the jungle of the Osa. Share hugs and memories with all of you who have been so blessed to have experienced such an amazing trip together in one of the most pristine biodiverse and simply magical places on Earth. Namaste. Taxi departure will be at 11:15 so that you can go to the Puerto Jiménez Airport (PJM) in time to catch your flight back to San Jose and back to your home abroad.

  • Space is limited to a small number of participants to ensure Beyond the Shore keeps the integrity and experience exceptional.
  • The most important thing is to come with an open mind and positive attitude. You'll be sharing meals and car rides with your hosts and fellow participants. While your hosts will provide the majority of your adventure descriptions and yoga training, the goal of each retreat is to build strong bonds between all those in attendance, to share knowledge and struggles with each other and to walk away from this experience with confidence, inspiration, and focus to return home.
  • You must know how to swim if you plan on doing any of the water activities with the group. Please take an open water paddleboard lesson before you head to Costa Rica with Beyond the Shore, this way you will know how to paddle and entry and exit the water safely.
  • You don't need any yoga experience at all, Beyond the Shore caters to beginners that have a desire to do yoga in any form, including just breathing with the group or lying and breathing with the group.

Included excursions

  • A nice stroll through the jungle to Matapalo
  • A tour of the grounds and to the beach "Pan Dulce"
  • Guided hike to a hidden waterfall
  • Hike to Cabo Matapalo and the Matapalo tree
