    Kalani offers accommodations to suit diverse preferences and budgets. The rustic accommodations are simple, outside-in spaces that offer comfort and tranquility. Angular, octagonal, or pentagonal structures are a contrast to box-based architecture and invite a departure from routine.

    Kalani accommodations are not equipped with heating or air conditioning, as Kalani is situated on the east coast of Hawaii Island, benefiting from the persistent east-to-west Pacific trade wind flow. Windows are screened, maximizing airflow and views, and there are no phones or televisions in rooms.

    Hale lodges

    Pronounced Ha'-lay, Hawaiian for "house", are two-level lodges that house contain rooms on each floor with access to common areas on both levels. The hale lodges are located on the central lawn near the dining lanai and feature garden views. Hale lodge rooms approximate 200 square feet and can accommodate up to three guests. Some rooms have private baths and the most economically priced rooms have shared baths.


    Lofts approximate 1,000 square feet and comprise two private bedrooms adjacent to a shared common space. Each loft bedroom can house up to two people and has a full private bath. The loft common space is spacious and open in feel and features a soaring and high-ceiled seating area and kitchenette.

SoulSweat touches on your emotional, spiritual, and physical body by encouraging you to let go, forget about what it looks like, open up, and have fun!     Just like with dance, poetry writing is a wonderful adventure, allowing you to indulge in both wild leaps and small steps of imagination to satisfy some yearnings for pattern, mystery, freedom, and release. Each day during this retreat you will gather after dancing and write spontaneous poetry. The informal sessions will be facilitated by Gayle Nosal, a long time SoulSweat dancer, poetry enthusiast, and writer.

      Lucy Wallace started teaching dance ten years ago at Alchemy of Movement. In 2010, Lucy bought the studio and continued to teach SoulSweat throughout the week. Her classes are cathartic, high energy, and celebratory. You will feel inspired while you forget that you are exercising.

    For more than 30 years, Kalani has been a soulful place of refuge and renewal for international guests. Kalani is an educational non-profit organization that celebrates Hawaii, nature, culture, and wellness. Kalani is located on acres of tropical beauty on the southeast coast of Hawaii Island, commonly known as the Big Island, and is bordered by tropical jungle and the Pacific Ocean.

    Hawai'i is less crowded and less commercial than other Hawaiian islands and offers a variety of spectacular natural attractions. Kalani is located near Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, where fire goddess, Pele, expands the island daily. The dramatic lava cliffs of the Kalani coastal area provide for close-up views of turtles and dolphins and seasonal whale watching. The cliff also provides a haven for sunbathing, meditation, or yoga.

    Three times a day, guests and staff are summoned by the call of the conch to dine on their open-air lanai (veranda). At this central gathering place, you can experience the daily rhythms of assembly and departure reminiscent of ancient village life. Kalani cuisine encompasses a variety of styles including Thai, Indian, and Italian.

    The chefs have extensive training and a common interest in creating healthful and delicious meals. They celebrate the abundance of Hawai’i by serving local tropical fruits and vegetables and fresh-caught fish. Seafood is often served at dinner (chicken and beef are served occasionally) and vegetarians are well-cared for. Most importantly, their chefs firmly believe that the care and love invested in the cuisine is transmitted to the diner. Everything is prepared with aloha.

    Aerial dance

    Aerial dance is a movement-dance laboratory using aerial silks. Cultivate the aerialist in you through core-strengthening exercises, modern dance, aerial technique, theater games, and improvisations to music. This fun and exhilarating class is open to all levels.

    Aquatic bodywork

    Intrigued by the different kinds of aquatic bodywork offered at Kalani? Sign up at the office for a short introductory aquatic bodywork session from the hands of an experienced practitioner. You may find yourself scheduling a full session afterwards!

    Hula class

    Experience the beauty and power of this uniquely Hawaiian art form that combines storytelling with dance, chant, and music. Everyone from beginners to experienced dancers are invited to come and learn about the hula, from its basic steps to a full hula dance by the end of the session. This activity is free for everyone.

    Kalani ecstatic dance

    Kalani is the birthplace of ecstatic dance, a beautiful practice which has taken off across the country. Ecstatic dance is held every Sunday, for adults age 18 and older, with fee 10 USD kama’āina and 15 USD for regular. Join this community dance experience, a great space with focused, compassionate, and spirited presenters.

    Lauhala weaving

    Learn the traditional Hawaiian art of lauhala (pandanus leaves) weaving using materials harvested from Kalani's own grounds. Beginners start with weaving a bracelet and progress to weaving fans, mats, baskets, and other pieces in subsequent sessions. Also enjoy chanting, talking story, and learning about Hawaiian culture.

    Osho Nataraj Meditation

    Cast aside your ego and become the dance in this joyful and moving meditation combining a total immersion in dance with stages of stillness and celebration.

    Qi Gong

    Qi Gong, chi kung, or chi gung is a practice of aligning body, breath, and mind for health, meditation, and martial arts training. With roots in Chinese medicine, philosophy, and martial arts, Qi Gong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance qi (chi) or what has been translated as "life energy".

    Tai Chi

    This introduction to Tai Chi focuses on the Yang style long form and push hands, while striving to bring the mind, body, and breath into coordination and harmony. All are welcome and the class can be adjusted to different levels of experience.


    Volleyball is an immensely popular sport throughout the Hawaiian Islands and Kalani is no exception! Whether a first-timer or a seasoned player, anyone looking to have fun and get their blood pumping is welcome to join in. This activity is free for everyone.

    The massage rooms are located in a quiet building overlooking the pond, providing a peaceful sanctuary where you can open yourself to the care of Kalani's skilled bodyworkers.

    Arrival by airplane

    Please book your flight to arrive at Hilo International Airport (ITO). Transfer from and to the airport is available upon request. Bella Retreats offer transportation from Hilo International Airport (ITO) only for 65 USD one way or 45 USD per person if more than one traveler. They will try to combine whenever possible. A regular taxi costs about 90 USD.

    Please inform Bella Retreats about your arrival and departure information as soon as you've purchased your airline ticket. They are happy to reserve your pickup and drop-off to and from the Hilo International Airport (ITO).

    Arrival by bus

    There is also very limited public transportation via the Hele-On county bus that leaves from downtown Hilo. This is a slow but inexpensive option that comes right to Kalani if you can coordinate schedules.

Katrina has a magnetic energy I was immediately drawn to - I probably do not fit the typical yogi mold but she was open and interested in my life.
