Accommodation

Shared tents or shelters will be provided for camping during this retreat. You should bring your own sleeping bag rated to zero degrees Fahrenheit. A pad to insulate you from the ground will help you sleep warm and comfortably.

Balanced Rock Yoga Retreat California Program

Heather Sullivan, an acclaimed local guide and co-founder of Balanced Rock, will support you throughout this holiday to express your ideas with creative writing and reflection techniques within the breathtaking backdrop of Yosemite’s high country, Tuolumne Meadows.

Heather will encourage you to reach down deep and find your own muse and your personal connection and response to nature. These practices will help empower you to portray your unique message.

Morning yoga sessions and day hikes will also be offered as a way to open your heart and mind to the creative process and the guidance of the natural world. No prior writing or yoga experience is necessary.

The following schedule is an outline. It is subject to change depending on the needs of the group and the weather. It allows for spontaneous inspiration, so please recognize Balanced Rock will be flexible.

Day 1 - Friday

You will gather at Tuolumne Meadows Campground at 3 p.m. for the introductions, intention setting, and an orientation to the course. In the afternoon, you will take your first hike to acquaint yourself with the area. After dinner, there will be time for relaxing, sharing stories, and stargazing, as you settle in for your first night in the mountains.

Day 2 - Saturday

Each morning will begin with hot drinks, a nourishing breakfast, and creative fun. The day includes writing instruction, time to reflect, and short hikes that will allow you to explore the elements for investigation and get some inspiration from the magic of trees, granite rock, alpine lakes, or mountain streams; nature invokes creativity and sparks the imagination for your art.

You will return to your camp with time for more journal writing, lessons, and discussions. In the evening, you will relax, prepare a delicious meal with the group, and enjoy good company and conversation before falling asleep under the starry skies of the sierra.

Day 3 - Sunday

You will greet the day together with the group to continue your creative explorations and group activities. After a celebratory lunch at the camp, you will have time to further explore the beautiful surroundings. The retreat will conclude by 2 p.m.

Instructors

Heather Sullivan
Heather is both a yoga instructor and an accomplished backcountry guide with Yosemite destinations, as well as trips in the Himalayas, under her belt. She is a 200-hour ERYT and 200-hour CRYT certified with Yoga Alliance. Her latest joy and success is creating a kid’s yoga and mindfulness program for grades K-6 in the El Portal School System. Heather is also a CMT in Shiatsu and Lomi Lomi massage, an Ayurvedic body-worker and a certified birth doula. Her yoga classes blend Ashtanga flow, Iyengar alignment, and a strong connection to the rhythms and patterns of the natural world.
