There are a mixture of single rooms, twin and triple rooms at the retreat centre. There are a few single rooms which are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis to those who prefer a single room. There will be a maximum of 13 people on this retreat.

AYP Yoga Retreat UK Program

The yoga practice

Practices will include asanas, meditation, spinal breathing, Pranayama, and samyama as well as other yoga practices. The focus of the retreat will be on the cultivation of inner silence, purification using pranayama and self-inquiry (jnana yoga). This retreat is suitable for people of all levels of ability from complete beginners through to advanced practitioners. Full instructions on practice will be given.

Tristan Dorling
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200 (Yoga)
Tristan had his first awakening experience in 1990 after a meditation retreat in a Buddhist cave monastery in Thailand and experienced the awakening of Kundalini the following year in 1991. Over the next 19 years, he continued to study Buddhist meditation and yoga and he traveled to Nepal, Sri Lanka, and especially India as often as possible to continue the study and practice of yoga in various ashrams and monasteries. He started teaching yoga and meditation in 2006. He qualified as a yoga teacher from the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta ashram in Kerala, India.

This retreat will take place at the Bala Brook Yoga Retreat Centre, Dartmoor, Devon, South West England, United Kingdom. Bala Brook is situated in Dartmoor National Park and on the edge of the open moor.

During this retreat, There will be two meals served each day (brunch and dinner) and fruit and hot drinks will be available all day. The food served will support a yoga and meditation practice. You can also cater for vegan diets and special diets such as dairy or gluten-free if you let AYP Yoga know in advance.

How to get there

Driving directions from Exeter

  • Driving south after Exeter, leave the A38 at Marley Head, (north-east of South Brent,) wriggle north-westwards around lanes following signs to Avon Dam.
  • Arrive at Shipley Bridge public carpark, beside river Avon.
  • At Shipley Bridge, cross the River Avon, follow the lane turning around to the left, southwards over a cattle grid.
  • After two minutes down the lane, go past one farm on your right, down a little hill over a little bridge and look out for Bala Brook sign on your right beside a timber gateway. This is the second habitation on your right after leaving Shipley bridge.
  • Approaching on the A385 from Totnes, cross the A38 at Marley Head and follow as above.
  • Approaching from the south (from Plymouth) turn off the A38 for South Brent. But avoid going through the Village by taking a left turn soon after leaving the A38, where there is a big main sign 'South Brent twinned with...', and signs for Brent Mill Business park and Aish.
  • Then you will definitely need a map to navigate the lanes.
  • Go under the railway and around to the right to reach a T junction.
  • Turn left up to Aish and thence on up, nearly two miles towards Shipley Bridge.
  • After a 'weak bridge', look out for Bala Brook on your left in a dip just before the little Bala bridge.
  • If you arrive at Shipley Bridge, you have gone too far. (Please do not enter any unsigned properties).

Arrival by train

Please travel to Totnes station then take a taxi (it's about eigh miles). There is a half hour bus service to South Brent from Totnes.

Do not use the Bala Brook postcode as it is shared with other locations. Use these co-ordinates 50° 26.802'N 3° 51.710'W instead.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 25% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 30 days before arrival.
