22 Days Atha Yoga Teacher Training in Spain

Camí Hort del Senyor, 6, 43893 Altafulla, Tarragona, Spanien

Ayurvedic Yoga Teacher Training

The Atha Yoga Teacher Training is a unique approach that unites modern science with ancient wisdom. Isabella Welsch, yoga teacher, yoga book author and psychotherapist with around 30 years of experience, is the main teacher of the program. You are taught a unique blend of styles (including Iyengar-, Ashtanga-Vinyasa and other forms of Hatha- and Flow-Yoga), called Atha Yoga (now yoga). In the training, you learn how to create and teach energetically balanced sequences for all constitutions on the basis of the Ayurvedic system of the 5 elements. Expect an easily digestible format and a supportive atmosphere that encourages you to learn and be deeply inspired by our method. You will leave this training equipped with all the tools that you need to know yourself, lead a more balanced lifestyle and be ready to start teaching yoga!

If the group is bigger than 10 participants, we can accommodate a maximum of 8 more students in double rooms in a nearby villa.

The curriculum of Atha Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 - Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Kriya, Bandha

You learn how to teach beginners, so we focus on a moderate practice with poses that make sense and are accessible to people who have no previous experience with yoga or similar activities. You learn how to regulate the breathing, to synchronize it with movements and how to apply the bandhas (energetic locks). You are taught how to instruct, sense, watch and correct in order to enhance learning and to work in pairs.

The teaching includes:

Warm-ups, sun salutations, and similar flow-sequences, standing poses, core-strengthening poses, backbends, forward bends, twists, hip openers, mudras, relaxation poses and breathing exercises.

At Level 1, you do not learn about postures or movements that are very complex or require a high level of acrobacy.

Deep relaxation and silent or guided meditation

We introduce you to Yoga Nidra (guided deep relaxation in lying posture) and to the basics of yogic forms of silent and guided meditation

Anatomy and physiology

Here we teach all that is necessary about muscles, joints, the spine, the organs, etc. You get to know how to teach safely from a physical point of view and how to adapt to limitations and injuries.

Yoga, history, and philosophy; Ayurveda and Yogic diet

This course teaches the Indian concept of the 5 elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. This is the basis of the Samkhya-philosophy, which in turn forms the basis of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which are studied intensely. We also introduce you to Ayurveda, which is built on the same system of the 5 elements. The knowledge of the fundamentals of Ayurveda will lead you to understand the yogic principles of a healthy diet.

Yogic lifestyle

Trying to lead the life of a yogi/ni also means gaining awareness of unproductive patterns of thoughts, words, and actions and to replace them with more beneficial ones. We take time to practice this in a safe environment so that you can explore new ways.

Teaching methodology

How to teach Yoga well is one of our main focuses. You will get a very clear idea of how the already mentioned Indian system of the 5 elements is your most important guide to creating yoga-sequences and in understanding the energy and quality of each pose. You learn how to introduce newcomers well to the science of yoga and how to teach in a moderate way, neither over- nor under challenging your future students.

Teaching practice

By the end of the training, each student will have taught their fellow trainees a total of 75 minutes and will have received constructive feedback from them.

The business of yoga

If you intend to live from yoga, you need to know a few facts about the modern business world. You will learn the intricacies of marketing in this field.

To complete the training you need to write down answers to a few questions. There is time to do this in your breaks during the training, but it is also possible to submit the answers up to 6 months after the training period ends.

Level 1 graduates will receive their certificates either at the closing ceremony or by post, depending on when the written answers are submitted.

Typical schedule from Sunday to Friday (slight variations are always possible):

  • 07:00 - 07:30 Morning tea (& fruit or light snack if necessary)
  • 07:30 - 10:30 Morning yoga practice, including meditation
  • 10:30 - 13:30 Brunch and break/homework
  • 13:30 - 18:30 Classroom sessions (Anatomy, philosophy, yogic lifestyle and teaching methodology) and afternoon yoga practice (hands-on; trainees teaching each other). There are breaks in between.
  • 18:45 - 21:00 Dinner and break/homework
  • 21:00 - 22:00 Pranayama and evening meditation

Isabella Welsch

Retreat location

The training is located on the beautiful Mediterranean Costa Daurada with its literally golden shimmering light. The seminar house is situated in a quiet, Spanish town with an intact historic center, an idyllic ancient fish quarter and 2 impressing medieval castles. The weather is mild all year round with a lot of sunshine, also throughout the winter. Therefore a part of the classroom activities might also take place outdoors, in the garden or on the beautiful sandy beach which is within walking distance (10 minutes).

Atha Yoga Seminarhaus offers a well-balanced vegetarian diet, starting the day with hydration, preferably a ginger-lemon drink and water before the morning yoga session. After the session, we serve an abundant brunch with fruit / smoothies, bread, cheese and spreads and Mediterranean delicacies made out of fresh ingredients.

This includes, for example, salad-variations, a Spanish tortilla or Mozzarella with tomatoes. The last meal of the day is a well-thought multi-course dinner. Sometimes we add a variation with fish to the menu. Water and fruits are available the whole day. We use locally grown, organic ingredients as much as possible.
