Set in the climbing wonderland that is the Picos de Europa national park in northern Spain, this retreat is specially designed for rock climbers, yoga practitioners and those curious to learn both. If you are already a yoga practitioner, Asturias Yoga invites you to apply your abilities in exciting realms of vertical limestone rock, and if you are already an experienced climber, you will experience the synergy of Ashtanga yoga and climbing. If you are new to climbing and yoga, this course will certainly offer beginners an exciting introduction to both.
During this retreat, you will stay in a beautifully restored traditional mountain cabin, situated above a small mountain meadow and chestnut forests, 200 meters from the shala. The cabin has great views over the Hibeu, a mountain on the costal side of the Picos de Europa. It has a kitchen, a large bathroom a stone built fireplace, and firewood supply. The cabin can accommodate up to three people.
Asturias Yoga also offers a more economic camping option in 4m bell tents on a spectacular mountain ridge with views of the Picos de Europa and the Gueña valley. The tents come with comfortable mattresses, futon, bedding, and towels..
During this retreat, you shall spend the mornings learning and practicing Ashtanga yoga, intending to maintain control of the mind uniting breath with movement. During the afternoons, you will visit a variety of climbing zones to play with this practice on vertical rock. The climbing zones are chosen for their quality of rock climbing and scenic situations, one offers a great view of the famous Naranjo de Bulnes, a vast granite monolith and another is situated on the beach. Visit a variety of climbing zones with our certified climbing guide. Having a qualified climbing instructor on hand and the routes being securely bolted you will be able to experiment confidently in a safe environment.
Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga refers to a dynamic style of yoga whereby long series of yoga asanas (postures) are performed in a fixed sequence in combination with focused breathing. These sequences aim to open and stimulate healing in all parts of the body. During the performance of the asanas the practitioner aims to maintain internal body awareness at all times, initially through focus on the breath, and later through the contraction and retention of internal muscles, known as bhandas or locks. Ashtanga lends itself ideally to activities which require high degrees of strength, flexibility, and concentration; such as surfing, rock climbing, and mountain biking.

Born in 1971, Simon’s fascination with yoga began in 2000 upon completing a solo journey on a bicycle from his native Ireland to India. After exploring various styles and traditions, he found Ashtanga to be what he was most inspired to practice and teach, initially due to its obvious benefits for surfing, biking, and rock climbing, and subsequently due to understanding it as a path to meditation. He has published a novel based on yoga philosophy, In Darkness the Seed of Light.

Alyson Simeone (1990, Washington) Alyson teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa through the framework of bringing breath and movement into union. Her classes facilitate the somatic experience of grace, a state of harmony within the body-mind complex. Before Ashtanga, Alyson studied extensively classical piano and ballet, performing in both for over a decade. She received her Bachelor´s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine. Since then, her work has been devoted to the self practice and teaching of the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga.
Ása graduated in 2012 with a degree in herbal medicine, and since then has had a particular interest in female health during pregnancy and birth. She was very inspired by the effect it had on her own pregnancies, birth, and also the aftercare of baby and mother. She works closely with a support group of homebirth in Asturias (Dar a luz en casa Asturias) giving workshops and talks. Ása says that her aim is to offer alternative practical advice to inspire the use of safe and common medicinal plants during the most transformational time in a woman's life.
Fay Lodge RM, NMP, BMidwifery, MSc I started my training to become a midwife at Manchester University in 2007 and quickly found my passion was for promoting and enabling normality during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. I fully believe that by empowering women to trust in themselves and their bodies’capabilities, they can achieve a fulfilling birth experience that is more likely to follow a natural course without the need for medical intervention.I believe through the use of antenatal education, preparation and empowerment women can enjoy this most most powerful and special time
I have been working in outdoors adventure activities for over ten years, first as a snowboard and skiing instructor and then gaining qualifications in climbing and water sports at an outdoor activity centre. It has been more than seven years since I started climbing. In 2016 I gained the Climbing Wall Award (CWA) and soon afterwards completed the Single Pitch Award (SPA). I teach people how to tie knots and belay safely, as well as good footwork, movement and technique, putting a strong emphasis on safety and good practice and allowing people to gain confidence in their own abilities.
This retreat will take place in Asturias, Spain. The yoga shala is located in the mountain forests of the northern Spanish province of Asturias, known to the Spanish as “Paraiso Natural”. The shala lies on the borders of Spain’s largest national park, halfway between the ocean and rugged limestone peaks of the Picos de Europa, considered the most bio-diverse area in Europe. The virgin nature, the tranquility of the forest, and the presence of powerful elements, supports the deepening of this sensation. Asturias comprises spectacular geographical features, Europe’s most diverse eco-system, and traditional culture. It is a land of high mountain peaks in juxtaposition with sandy ocean beaches and sea-cliffs; verdant mountain forests, green valleys and renowned cave-aged cheeses.
